Falcons sign veteran QB Nathan Peterman to practice squad

The Atlanta Falcons signed veteran quarterback Nathan Peterman to the practice squad on Tuesday.

In a corresponding move, the Falcons released offensive lineman Julie’n Davenport from the practice squad.

Atlanta has three new quarterbacks with starter Kirk Cousins signed as a free agent and Michael Penix Jr. selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Washington.

Peterman, 30, most recently had signed with the Las Vegas Raiders on Aug. 13 and was released on Aug. 27. He had played with the Raiders in 2020-21, as well as with the Buffalo Bills in 2017-18 and the Chicago Bears in 2022-23.

Selected in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Pittsburgh by Buffalo, Peterman has completed 85 of 160 passes (53.1 percent) and thrown four touchdown passes with 13 interceptions in 15 games. He is 1-4 as a starter.

Davenport, 29, has played in 60 games (32 starts) for the Houston Texans (2017-18), Miami Dolphins (2019-20) and Indianapolis Colts (2021). He was on the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad for part of the 2022 season. The Texans picked him in the fourth round of the 2017 draft out of Bucknell.

The Falcons open the season Sunday at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Bears re-sign QB Nathan Peterman to active roster

The Chicago Bears re-signed quarterback Nathan Peterman to the 53-man roster less than 24 hours after releasing the journeyman.

The official depth chart listed Justin Fields as the starter and Tyson Bagent as the third-stringer, with a blank space in the QB2 slot after the team released Peterman on Wednesday.

Peterman, 29, would presumably serve as Fields’ backup when the Bears (0-2) visit the Kansas City Chiefs (1-1) on Sunday afternoon, with Bagent again filling the role of emergency third QB.

Head coach Matt Eberflus said this summer a big reason for bringing Peterman back in 2023 was his impact on the development and week-to-week preparation of Fields.

Peterman started the 2022 season finale for Chicago, completing 11 of 19 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown in a 29-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

He has completed 53.1 percent of his passes for 712 yards with four touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 13 career games (five starts) with the Buffalo Bills (2017-18), Las Vegas Raiders (2020-21) and Bears.

Bears bring back QB Nathan Peterman after release

The Chicago Bears signed quarterback Nathan Peterman, two days after releasing him in their final roster cuts.

The Bears on Thursday also announced the signing of receiver/return specialist Trent Taylor to the active roster.

Peterman and undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent will back up Justin Fields.

Peterman, 29, appeared in three games (one start) last season for the Bears, connecting on 14 of 25 passes for 139 yards, one touchdown and one interception. In two preseason games this summer, he was 14-of-24 passing for 173 yards and a TD.

In his career with the Buffalo Bills (2017-18), Las Vegas Raiders (2020-21) and Bears, Peterman has a 1-4-0 record as a starter and has appeared in 13 games. He has thrown for 712 yards, completing 53.1 percent of his passes with four TDs and 13 interceptions.

Taylor, 29, was a fifth-round pick of the 49ers in the 2017 NFL Draft.

He spent three seasons in San Francisco, followed by two with the Cincinnati Bengals, and appeared in 61 games (three starts). For his career, Taylor has 87 receptions for 834 yards and three touchdowns. He’s returned 89 punts for 863 yards (9.7 yards average) and eight kickoffs for 106 yards (13.3).

In corresponding moves, the Bears placed guard Teven Jenkins and offensive lineman Doug Kramer on injured reserve.

Bears’ Justin Fields out, Nathan Peterman to start vs. Vikings

The Chicago Bears will turn to Nathan Peterman to start the team’s season finale this weekend with fellow quarterback Justin Fields nursing a sore hip, coach Matt Eberflus said Wednesday.

“Justin Fields came in on Monday morning with a sore hip, which many times happens to players when they come in with soreness that they didn’t anticipate to be like that. So we sent him to get an MRI on his hip, and that showed he had a strain,” Eberflus said. “He’s not going to be a full speed this week and the medical staff has ruled him out for this week. This is not a long-term injury, just so we know that.”

Eberflus said the Bears’ place in the standings didn’t play a role in the decision — and that Fields still would be spectator on Sunday if it were a playoff game.

As it stands, Chicago has long since been eliminated from postseason contention. The Bears (3-13) have lost nine in a row heading into Sunday’s game against the visiting Minnesota Vikings (12-4).

Fields, 23, has completed 60.4 percent of his passes for 2,242 yards, with 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 15 games this season. He also leads the team in rushing yards (1,143) and rushing touchdowns (eight).

Peterman, 28, has completed 3 of 6 passes for 25 yards and an interception in two games this season.

He has completed just 52.5 percent of his passes for 598 yards and three touchdowns, with 13 interceptions in 12 career games with the Buffalo Bills, Las Vegas Raiders and Bears.

Bears sign QB Nathan Peterman

The Chicago Bears signed free agent quarterback Nathan Peterman to a one-year contract.

Peterman spent the past two seasons as the third-string quarterback with the Las Vegas Raiders. He appeared in two games, completing three passes for 25 yards.

A fifth-round draft pick in 2017 by the Bills, he played two seasons in Buffalo, where he appeared in eight games with four starts (1-3 record).

In his career, Peterman has completed 71 of 135 pass attempts for 573 yards. He’s thrown for three touchdowns and 12 interceptions — five of them coming in a disastrous start on Nov. 19, 2017, against the Los Angeles Chargers.

In Las Vegas, Peterman played behind Derek Carr and Marcus Mariota. In Chicago, second-year QB Justin Fields is the expected starter with veteran Trevor Siemian signed earlier this offseason to serve as his primary backup.
