Wisconsin aims to correct mistakes vs. New Mexico State

After an upset loss at home that dropped Wisconsin out of the rankings, the Badgers will look to regroup when they host New Mexico State on Saturday at Camp Randall in Madison, Wis., in their final nonconference game before heading into the Big Ten season.

Wisconsin (1-1), ranked No. 19 last week, failed to score in the second half and dropped a 17-14 decision to Washington State this past weekend. New Mexico State (0-3) is coming off a 20-13 loss at rival UTEP.

The Badgers outgained Washington State by almost 150 yards and had a 16-minute advantage in time of possession, but had three turnovers, two missed field goals and 11 penalties for 106 yards.

“I do believe they’re correctable,” Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst said. “The last drive, we jump offsides, that’s something you’ve got to correct. I’m not saying it won’t ever happen again, but that’s correctable. I think you’ve then got to continue to look at what’s causing those things.”

Braelon Allen, who rushed for 148 yards in an opening 38-0 win over Illinois State, ran for 98 yards on 21 carries, but was kept out of the end zone. He’s rushed for 246 yards this season, which is fourth in the Big Ten.

Graham Mertz completed 18 of 31 passes for 227 yards with two touchdowns and one interception against Washington State. Both scoring passes went to tight end Clay Cundiff in the second quarter to erase a 7-0 deficit.

New Mexico State has already faced one Big Ten opponent this season, losing to Minnesota 38-0 in its second game.

After trailing 17-0 at the half against UTEP, the Aggies were driving for the tying touchdown when quarterback Diego Pavia lost a fumble at the UTEP 14-yard line with three seconds remaining.

“There were spurts in the game that we had opportunities,” first-year New Mexico State head coach Jerry Kill said. “There was probably left about 14 to 17 points out there. But what we want to be and who we want to be really showed up more in the second half.”

Pavia, who came on in the second quarter against UTEP, is the team’s leading rusher with 119 yards on 23 carries. Pavia has completed 18 of 45 passes for 185 yards with three interceptions. Gavin Frakes is 12-for-25 for 197 yards with three picks and the lone passing touchdown.

Kill is familiar with Wisconsin from his five seasons as head coach at Minnesota from 2011-15 but went 0-4 against the Badgers during his time in the Big Ten.

Mohamed Ibrahim, Minnesota shut out New Mexico State

Mohamed Ibrahim rushed for 132 yards and two touchdowns as the Minnesota Golden Gophers opened their season by flattening New Mexico State 38-0 in Minneapolis on Thursday night.

Quarterback Tanner Morgan threw for 174 yards on 13 of 19 passing and added two touchdowns on 1-yard runs. The Golden Gophers scored on their first six possessions and dominated throughout, outgaining the Aggies 485 yards to 91 and dominating time of possession, 44:30 to 15:30.

Ibrahim, who did not play in the second half, topped 100 yards rushing for his 10th straight game, dating back to the end of the 2019 season. He missed all but one game last season due to a left leg injury.

Michael Brown-Stephens and Chris Autman-Bell each had three catches, totaling 52 and 38 yards respectively.

The Aggies went three-and-out on four of their eight possessions, and they had six first downs to 31 for Minnesota. They didn’t make it into Gophers territory until early in the fourth quarter.

Trey Potts, who added 89 yards rushing on 17 carries, scored from a yard out near the end of the third quarter to complete the scoring.

The Aggies’ leading rushers were starting quarterback Diego Pavia (14 yards) and running back Ahmonte Watkins (13). Pavia went 2-for-5 passing for 10 yards.

Freshman Gavin Frakes came on to go 2-for-7 for 43 yards, 34 yards on a completion to Justice Powers. It set up the Aggies on Minnesota’s 22-yard line, but Frakes’ pass was picked off by Terell Smith in the end zone with about 10 minutes left.

The Gophers’ first two touchdowns were on runs by Ibrahim. His 4-yard rush with 9:50 left in the first quarter capped a quick drive of 74 yards on seven plays that took only about three minutes. He then scored from 1 yard out to culminate a 13-play drive of nearly 13 minutes on the first play of the second quarter.

After Matthew Trickett’s 26-yard field goal midway through the second period extended the lead to 17-0, Morgan’s scores came in the closing seconds of the first half and with 6:31 left in the third quarter.

New Mexico State (0-2), which lost to Nevada 23-13 on Aug. 27 to open its season, lost its 19th straight road game. Its last road win was in September 2018 at UTEP.

Reports: Jerry Kill to be named coach at New Mexico State

Jerry Kill will become the next head coach at New Mexico State, multiple outlets reported.

He is expected to be introduced Monday as the replacement for Doug Martin, whose contract is not being renewed. Kill, 60, will be reunited with New Mexico State athletic director Mario Moccia, with whom he worked at Southern Illinois when Kill coached there from 2001-07.

Martin leaves the Aggies with a 25-74 overall record in nine seasons. They finished 2-10 this season after beating UMass 44-27 on Saturday in the season finale.

Kill has an extensive coaching resume that also includes head coaching stints at Saginaw Valley State, Northern Illinois and Minnesota. Most recently, he served as interim coach at TCU for the final four games of the season after the departure of longtime coach Gary Patterson.

He was named the 2014 Big Ten Coach of the Year after leading Minnesota to the Citrus Bowl for its first New Year’s Day game since 1962. He led the Salukis to five straight NCAA playoff appearances at the FCS level.

Kill’s career has been interrupted by medical concerns. He suffers from epileptic seizures that led him to resign at Minnesota in 2015.

Will Levis’ 419-yard day powers Kentucky past New Mexico State

Will Levis passed for a career high 419 yards and matched his career high with four touchdowns tosses as Kentucky overcame some sloppy play for a 56-16 victory over New Mexico State Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Ky.

Justin Rigg and Josh Ali had two scoring receptions each for career single-game bests as Levis finished with 21 completions in 31 attempts. Levis threw an interception among the four turnovers for the Wildcats (8-3).

Nebraska transfer Wan’Dale Robinson also had a big day for Kentucky with 8 catches for a career-high 181 yards that included a career-long 79-yarder.

Sophomore Beau Allen scored his first career touchdown after relieving Levis in the fourth quarter, and the Wildcats also got rushing touchdowns from Chris Rodriguez and Kavosiey Smoke.

The Aggies (1-10) had trouble putting together a consistent attack on offense. Jonah Johnson passed for 181 yards on 16 completions in 35 attempts and the Aggies rushed for only 101 yards in dropping their seventh consecutive game.

Defense provided the Aggies their only touchdown when Trevor Brohard returned a Kentucky fumble 25 yards on the Wildcats’ third offensive play.

Ethan Albertson provided the rest of New Mexico State’s scoring by matching his single-game career high with three field goals, including his second 50-yarder in a week. He scored the Aggies’ only points with a 50-yarder in a 59-3 loss at Alabama.

The Wildcats led 35-16 at the halftime break despite early miscues. In addition to the bad snap that led to their early fumble, Rodriguez also lost a fumble on a first down plunge from New Mexico State’s 4-yard line.

But Levis posted 287 of his passing yards and three of his touchdown throws in the first half alone. Rodriquez capped a 91-yard scoring drive with a 6-yard run and Quandre Mosley scored on a 38-yard interception return in the first quarter for the Wildcats.

Winning SEC mark assured, Kentucky set to tackle NMSU

Having wrapped up Southeastern Conference play with a win over Vanderbilt, Kentucky finishes the regular season with a pair of nonleague affairs, starting with the home finale against New Mexico State on Saturday.

With their 5-3 league record, the Wildcats (7-3) are assured of sole possession of second place in the SEC East for the first time and have a shot at 10 wins for the fourth time in program history.

After facing the Aggies (1-9), the Wildcats play at Louisville on Thanksgiving weekend, with a bowl game to follow.

“I’m proud of the team, the fact that our team will have a winning SEC record,” Wildcats coach Mark Stoops said. “At the end of the day, there’s going to be four or five teams in our league, maybe six, but highly unlikely, probably four or five, that will have a winning record in the SEC. It’s hard.”

For New Mexico State, the game will be a homecoming for Doug Martin. The coach was a backup quarterback at Kentucky in the early 1980s and calls himself a “proud alum.” Kentucky is where he met his wife, Molly, and it’s where he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant.

Martin is bringing his Aggies to Lexington for a second time, having lost to the Wildcats 62-42 in 2016. The 42 points were the second most the Aggies scored that season.

“It was a pretty competitive game,” Martin said. “I know we had a hard time stopping Kentucky, too. They had a good offensive team also. I remember our guys played really hard and competed. It was a good football game.”

Stoops agrees, saying the Aggies gave the Wildcats all they could handle.

“They really had an opportunity to beat us,” the Kentucky coach said, “so we better be locked in.”

The Wildcats must ignore the 59-3 pounding that New Mexico State absorbed at Alabama last week, Stoops said.

“We always talk about ourselves, no matter who we’re playing,” Stoops said. “We could be playing the No. 1 team in the country or somebody that’s struggling, it doesn’t matter.”

The Aggies’ 2020 season was postponed to the spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Richardson played in one game, registering eight tackles against Tarleton State on Feb. 21.

He was a three-star recruit in the Class of 2018 out of Klein, Texas, and has three seasons of eligibility remaining.
