49ers star DE Nick Bosa aggravates hip, injures other hip

San Francisco 49ers All-Pro defensive end Nick Bosa aggravated a hip injury and hurt his other hip in the process during Sunday’s 20-17 home loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Bosa, 27, had dealt with a hip issue leading up to the game and was listed as questionable, but suited up and finished with 1 1/2 sacks, four tackles and two tackles for loss.

After a sack of Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith in the third quarter, Bosa limped off the field and was unable to return.

“I guess I was compensating, pushed through last week,” he told reporters. “And the same thing happened to my other oblique. So, see what I’m feeling like (Monday).”

Asked about how concerned he is about possibly missing time as the Niners chase a playoff spot, Bosa said, “It’s definitely there. I don’t know, I gotta see.”

On the same drive Bosa left with the injury, the Seahawks scored their first touchdown to take a 13-10 lead. With Bosa unable to return, the 49ers couldn’t prevent Smith from scoring the winning touchdown on a 13-yard run with 12 seconds remaining in the game.

“Brutal,” Bosa said of having to watch the Seahawks’ rally while standing on the sideline. “The most important time in the game for me to be out there, and I wasn’t able to be. I hate missing time, that’s why I pushed through last week. Hopefully it’s not too long.”

A four-time Pro Bowl selection after the Niners selected him No. 2 overall in the 2019 draft, Bosa has 60.5 sacks and 245 tackles and 82 tackles for loss in 78 games (76 starts). He was named an All-Pro and the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 after registering a career-high 18.5 sacks.

In 10 starts this season, Bosa has seven sacks, 36 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and one interception.

Chargers QB Justin Herbert (ankle) questionable vs. Chiefs

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert (ankle) is questionable for Sunday’s game against the visiting Kansas City Chiefs in Los Angeles.

Herbert was a limited participant in practice for the third straight day on Friday. He is dealing with a high-ankle sprain he reaggravated during the Chargers’ 20-10 loss last Sunday at the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Los Angeles (2-1) has a bye following Sunday’s game, but Herbert told reporters Wednesday he intended to play against Kansas City (3-0) instead of buying an extra week of rest.

“That was part of the conversation,” Herbert said on potentially sitting out Sunday. “I don’t think that’s the way we’re heading.”

The fifth-year quarterback has completed 67.2 percent of his passes and thrown for 399 yards with four touchdowns and one interception in three starts this season for the Chargers.

Taylor Heinicke (29 career starts) completed both of his pass attempts for 24 yards in relief of Herbert last Sunday. Easton Stick (four starts) is also an option if Herbert can’t go.

Whoever lines up under center for Los Angeles on Sunday will have to manage without starting left tackle Rashawn Slater, who was ruled out with a pectoral injury. Rookie right tackle Joe Alt is questionable with a sprained MCL.

Defensively, the Chargers will be without star edge rusher Joey Bosa (hip) and linebacker Junior Colson (hamstring).

Wide receiver Derius Davis and defensive back Deane Leonard are questionable with hamstring issues, while corner Kristian Fulton (knee) and defensive back Ja’Sir Taylor (fibula) are also questionable.

Reports: Chargers RT Joe Alt (knee) likely out vs. Chiefs

Chargers rookie right tackle Joe Alt may miss Los Angeles’ home game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday with a sprained MCL, ESPN reported Monday.

The fifth overall pick of this year’s NFL draft, Alt sustained the injury during the fourth quarter of the Chargers’ 20-10 loss at the Pittsburgh Steelers last Sunday.

Pittsburgh defensive tackle Cameron Heyward rolled up on Alt’s right leg during Los Angeles’ final possession of the game.

NFL Network reported Monday that Alt will not need surgery but will miss “some time.”

Alt’s injury came one quarter after Chargers left tackle Rashawn Slater exited with a pectoral injury. Slater’s status for Kansas City is unknown.

Justin Herbert’s status is also murky after the Los Angeles quarterback aggravated a high ankle sprain in the third quarter against the Steelers.

Herbert left the stadium in a walking boot, though Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters Monday that X-rays on the quarterback’s right ankle were negative.

Los Angeles star edge rusher Joey Bosa also exited Sunday’s loss after two plays as he continues to battle a hip injury. His status for Sunday is unknown.

The Chargers (2-1) have a bye following their game against the Chiefs (3-0).

Vikings’ Justin Jefferson, 49ers’ Nick Bosa hurt on same play

Minnesota Vikings star wideout Justin Jefferson and San Francisco 49ers star pass rusher Nick Bosa were injured on the same play in the third quarter Sunday in Minneapolis.

Bosa appeared to injure his left ankle, which was rolled up on by a teammate as he attempted to rush the pocket. He walked to the sidelines under his own power and returned to the game in the fourth quarter.

Separately, Jefferson appeared to injure his right leg as he also got rolled up on during the play. Jefferson walked slowly off the field with his arms draped around the Vikings’ training staff.

Bosa had two sacks and four tackles at the time of his injury.

Jefferson had four catches for 133 yards and a touchdown. He hauled in a career-long 97-yard touchdown in the first half.

Reports: 49ers’ Nick Bosa agrees to 5-year, $170M extension

Defensive end Nick Bosa agreed to a five-year, $170 million contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers that will make him the highest-paid player in NFL history, multiple media outlets reported on Wednesday.

Per reports, the deal includes $122.5 million guaranteed. The $34 million average annual salary eclipsed the $31.7 million average of Los Angeles Rams star defensive tackle Aaron Donald.

Bosa was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 and earned his third Pro Bowl selection with a league-leading 18.5 sacks. He was third in quarterback pressures with 58.

Bosa, 25, also had 51 tackles and two forced fumbles in 16 games (all starts) last season. He has totaled 43 sacks, 156 tackles and eight forced fumbles in 51 career games (49 starts) with the 49ers.

GM: Nick Bosa holdout ‘no concern’ for 49ers

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch sees no reason to sweat Nick Bosa’s decision to stay away from training camp.

Bosa plans to keep his distance from San Francisco until the business of a long-term contract extension is addressed.

“I don’t like not having one of our best players here,” Lynch said Monday. “We’ve got a really good track record that I’m proud of as a group of having our players in, but I also understand it. And understand that we’re going to have to exhibit some patience and understand that ultimately this thing will work out.”

Bosa was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 with a league-leading 18.5 sacks. He was third in quarterback pressures with 58.

He’s entering the final year of his contract and has been a dominant force for the 49ers’ front since 2019. He reported for mandatory minicamp but otherwise has trained away from the team in Florida while waiting for a new deal.

But Bosa said there was no insistence from his side to the team that a contract extension must make him the highest-paid player — or defensive player — in the NFL. Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald makes more than $31 million per year.

Lynch said the 49ers will withhold fining Bosa, which is permitted by his contract with the team, establishing the two sides are chasing the same end goal.

Even with a new defensive coordinator, linebacker Fred Warner believes Bosa will be there when it matters. He said defensive teammates know there is not a reason to fret over Bosa’s conditioning.

Lynch agreed Bosa will always look great in the mirror, but believes there will be a point when the team needs to strongly encourage him to rejoin the locker room.

“I think that’s important to not only give yourself the best chance to not only play at the highest level but to stay healthy,” Lynch said.

49ers DE Nick Bosa (hamstring) ruled questionable vs. Buccaneers

After not practicing all week, San Francisco 49ers star defensive end Nick Bosa was ruled questionable for Sunday’s home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a hamstring injury.

The two-time Pro Bowl selection, who leads the NFL with 14.5 sacks this season, did not speak to reporters on Friday. But head coach Kyle Shanahan said that Bosa did not feel the irritation until Monday, one day after San Francisco’s 33-17 win over the Miami Dolphins.

“Sometimes those guys are going in the games and that does happen,” Shanahan told media members Friday. “It happened with Deebo (Samuel) too on the previous week, so it was bothering him (Bosa) on Monday and looked into it and it was legit.”

Bosa had perhaps his best game of the season in the win over Miami, the 49ers’ fifth in a row. The 25-year-old notched two tackles for loss and posted three sacks in a game for the second time in his career.

If Bosa is sidelined for Sunday’s matchup between first-place teams against Tampa Bay, it will mark his second missed game in 2022. He sat out the Niners’ loss at Atlanta in Week 6 with a groin injury.

Also for the Niners, defensive lineman Arik Armstead (foot, ankle), guard Spencer Burford (ankle), running back Christian McCaffrey (knee) and wide receiver Samuel (quad) are all ready to play, with no designation on Friday’s injury report. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (foot), defensive lineman Hassan Ridgeway (pectoral) and defensive back Tarvarius Moore (knee) are all out this week.

For the Buccaneers, tackle Tristan Wirfs (ankle/knee) and safeties Mike Edwards (hamstring) and Antoine Winfield Jr. (ankle) were listed as doubtful on Friday. None of the three practiced this week. Neither did running back Leonard Fournette (foot) on Friday, with the team tabbing him as questionable to play. Akiem Hicks (foot) also sat out on Friday and is questionable, as well as cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting (quad), who practiced fully after being limited each of the prior two days.

49ers DE Nick Bosa clears concussion protocol, will play Saturday

San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa cleared concussion protocol Friday and will play in Saturday’s NFC divisional-round road playoff game against the Green Bay Packers.

Bosa was listed as questionable to play as recently as Thursday after he was injured in Sunday’s wild card-round victory over the Dallas Cowboys when his head collided with the leg of an oncoming teammate. Bosa played in just 23 of 72 snaps against the Cowboys.

Bosa’s 15.5 sacks were fourth in the NFL during the regular season, and he had 21 tackles for loss, which tied the league lead.

Bosa returned to being a full participant in practice on Thursday, along with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who added a right shoulder injury Sunday to a previous thumb injury on his right (throwing) hand. Garoppolo is expected to play against the Packers.

San Francisco also placed cornerback Darqueze Dennard on the active roster along with linebacker Mark Nzeocha. Cornerback Ambry Thomas (knee) and defensive lineman Jordan Willis (ankle) remain questionable.

Niners’ Nick Bosa, Jimmy Garoppolo both practice

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and pass rusher Nick Bosa were both full participants at practice Thursday.

Bosa, however, is officially listed as questionable to play in Saturday night’s divisional playoff game at Green Bay.

Bosa suffered a concussion in last week’s wild-card win over Dallas and missed the second half. Garoppolo sprained his right shoulder in the contest while already nursing an injury to the thumb on his throwing hand.

Defensive lineman Jordan Willis (ankle) and cornerback Ambry Thomas (knee) are also questionable after being limited in practice.

Star linebacker Fred Warner (ankle) and top running back Elijah Mitchell (knee) were full participants.
