Florida State fires 3 assistants, including OC, DC

Florida State head coach Mike Norvell fired three members of his coaching staff on Sunday, one day after the Seminoles were steamrolled 52-3 by No. 10 Notre Dame.

Norvell fired offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Alex Atkins, defensive coordinator Adam Fuller and wide receivers coach Ron Dugans.

“I appreciate the work these three men have provided over the last five years with me at Florida State,” Norvell said. “They are all great men with families who also have poured into our program. We had many great moments together here, and I have never doubted their passion for our players and for Florida State.

“Unfortunately, we have not upheld the Florida State standard with our results on the field this season. I did not make any of these decisions lightly, but I felt changes needed to be made to elevate our program back to where we all desire it to be.”

Linebackers coach Randy Shannon will serve as defensive coordinator after sharing the duties with Fuller. Other duties will be shared among various coaches.

Florida State is last among 133 FBS schools in scoring offense (13.3 points per game) and next-to-last in total offense (258.9 yards per game). On the other side of the ball, the Seminoles are 101st in scoring defense (29.8) and 99th in total defense (398.8).

Florida State stands 1-9 overall and 1-7 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Its lone win came against Cal on Sept. 21. The Seminoles have dropped six straight games since that victory.

Last season, Florida State went 13-1 and barely missed a College Football Playoff spot in the four-team system. The Seminoles lost 63-3 to Georgia in the Orange Bowl.

Florida State has a bye this week. It hosts FCS program Charleston Southern on Nov. 23 and closes the season against Florida on Nov. 30.

The Seminoles are on pace to notch their fewest wins in a full season since going 3-8 in 1975.

Norvell is 32-26 in his five seasons as Florida State’s head coach.

Colorado State head coach Jay Norvell roams the sideline during the green and gold spring game on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins.

Colorado State coach Jay Norvell takes veiled jab at Deion Sanders

Colorado State head coach Jay Norvell and the Rams are headed to Boulder to play the Colorado Buffaloes, where ESPN’s “College GameDay” and a flock of energized locals are sure to greet the in-state rival.

Norvell said on his coach’s show on Wednesday that underdog CSU is tired of the pomp and circumstance around the game with much of the attention cast on new Colorado coach Deion Sanders and the hot-ticket Buffs.

Colorado enters the game ranked 18th in the Top 25.

In particular, Norvell took a thinly veiled jab at Sanders’ press conference attire after he was interviewed in a baseball cap and sunglasses. Norvell consistently wears a visor on the sideline.

“We had to do a bunch of ESPN videos, and it was great, I loved it,” Norvell said on his coach’s show. “But our kids came out of all those videos really with a chip on their shoulder. They’re tired of all that stuff. They really are tired of it.

“I sat down with ESPN today. And I don’t care if they hear it in Boulder. I told them I took my hat off and my glasses off. And I told them, ‘When I talk to grownups, I take my hat and my glasses off.’ That’s what my mother taught me.”

The Rams have dropped 24 consecutive games against ranked opponents since beating then-No. 7 Colorado in 2002 during Sonny Lubick’s tenure as Rams coach.

Colorado State has lost the past five meetings — the most recent was in 2019 — in the Rocky Mountain Showdown.

Four-star QB Brock Glenn flips from Ohio State to Florida State

Brock Glenn, a four-star quarterback in the Class of 2023, switched his collegiate commitment from Ohio State to Florida State on Monday.

Glenn, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound prospect, is the No. 22 quarterback in the class according to the 247Sports composite rankings. He originally pledged to the Buckeyes in July.

Behind quarterback C.J. Stroud, who’s likely to be a high pick in next spring’s NFL draft, Ohio State has former five-star Kyle McCord waiting in the wings, meaning Glenn might see more playing time by moving to Florida State.

Glenn is from Memphis, Tenn., where Seminoles coach Mike Norvell coached the Memphis Tigers from 2016-19. Glenn is finishing his senior year at Lausanne Collegiate School.

Florida State’s Norvell rejoining team after COVID-19 quarantine

Florida State coach Mike Norvell said he will return to practice on Tuesday and coach in Saturday’s game against Jacksonville State after missing the loss to Miami due to a positive COVID-19 test.

The Seminoles were pounded 52-10 by the Hurricanes on Saturday in their second game since Norvell was hired away from Memphis.

Norvell is completing a 10-day quarantine due to the positive test as required by the ACC’s medical advisory group.

He said it was tough not to be in the locker room after the loss to Miami. He did address the team on Zoom on Sunday.

“I truly embrace the times when things aren’t going well, when you have that opportunity to truly help lift guys up and kind of refocus them,” Norvell said. “I sent the team a message there after the game so they got a sense of where I was and my thoughts for them and with them, and it was good to be able to get back at least in front of them on Zoom there on Sunday in our in our meeting, but that was something that I hated that I wasn’t there for because this is my team, these are my players, these are guys that I do absolutely care about and believe in.

“And it hurts when you when you don’t play to your capabilities, and you get beat in a big game, in rivalry game and you know that, in some instances, we didn’t put ourselves in a position to even achieve success.”

Norvell, 38, went 38-15 in four seasons at Memphis. The Tigers were 12-1 last season when he left for Florida State and he didn’t coach in Memphis’ Cotton Bowl loss to Penn State.
