Jets tab Frank Reich as offensive coordinator

The New York Jets hired Frank Reich as their offensive coordinator on Wednesday morning.

The move comes a week after the Jets fired offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand following a 3-14 season.

“Frank has a rare combination of experience, creativity, and calm under pressure,” Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said in a statement released by the team. “He’s lived this game from every angle — as a quarterback in this league and as a coach who’s led offenses at the highest level. He is unique in his ability to see the game for what it is right now and adapt when appropriate. Frank understands offense and how to utilize the strengths of players. I am looking forward to how he will help this team have success.”

Reich, 64, interviewed with the Jets last week and had an in-person interview on Tuesday. He will become the 12th different play-caller in a 16-year span for New York.

Reich and Glenn will reunite after being teammates on a dismal 1-15 Jets team in 1996. Reich started seven games while replacing an injured Neil O’Donnell.

Reich served as Stanford’s interim head coach in 2025, two years after he was fired following a 1-10 start with the Carolina Panthers. He spent 2018-22 as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts and has an overall record of 41-43-1.

Reich enjoyed success as the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2016-17, helping the team to a Super Bowl LII victory while working with quarterbacks Carson Wentz and Nick Foles. Reich also spent time as the offensive coordinator for the then-San Diego Chargers (2014-15).

Under Engstrand, the Jets were dead last in the NFL in passing yards per game (140.3) this season. They ranked 29th in the NFL in points (17.6) and total yards (263.6).

Reports: Lions land on ex-Cards OC Drew Petzing for same role

The Detroit Lions have hired former Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing to the same position, multiple outlets reported Monday.

After losing successful playcaller Ben Johnson to be the head coach of the Bears last offseason, the Lions struggled with Josh Morton calling plays this season. Head coach Dan Campbell initially demoted Morton from play-calling duties midseason before Morton was ultimately fired Jan. 6.

Petzing, 38, served as the Cardinals’ offensive coordinator and playcaller since 2023 and takes over a potent Lions offense that finished as the No. 1 scoring team in 2024 and tied for fourth in 2025.

After losing quarterback Kyler Murray five games into the season, Petzing and the Cardinals rolled with Jacoby Brissett for the rest of the schedule, leading to a 3-14 record. Petzing’s offense finished 19th in yards per game (325.8), seventh in passing yards per game (232.6) and 23rd in points per game (20.9).

Before joining Arizona’s staff, Petzing was an offensive assistant for the Minnesota Vikings (2014-19) and a tight ends coach and quarterbacks coach for the Cleveland Browns (2020-22).

Jets keep poaching Lions, hire Tanner Engstrand as OC

The New York Jets announced the hiring of Tanner Engstrand as their next offensive coordinator on Friday, continuing to raid the Detroit Lions’ cupboard in the process.

Engstrand, 42, was on the Lions’ staff since 2020 and served as their passing game coordinator for the past three seasons.

He follows Aaron Glenn to New York after the Jets tapped Glenn, formerly Detroit’s defensive coordinator, as their new head coach. The Jets also recently hired ex-Lions tight ends coach Steve Heiden to be their offensive line coach.

Engstrand helped Jared Goff and the Lions rank No. 1 in the NFL in scoring offense (33.2 points per game), No. 2 in total offense (409.5 yards per game) and No. 2 in passing offense (263.2 ypg) this past season.

Engstrand has yet to serve as an offensive coordinator in the NFL, but he did so at the University of San Diego from 2011-17. He played quarterback at Grossmont College and San Diego State.

Engstrand was a San Diego State teammate of new Jets general manager Darren Mougey, also a quarterback, in 2004. Current Minnesota Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell was the starting quarterback.

The Jets have a major decision to make with their own quarterback, as 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers expressed during last season that if he were to continue playing in 2025, he’d want it to be for New York.

Report: Saints reach deal with Klint Kubiak as OC

The New Orleans Saints are in agreement with San Francisco 49ers passing game specialist Klint Kubiak to be their offensive coordinator, NFL Network reported Monday.

It was first reported 10 days ago that the Saints were targeting Kubiak but no deal could be done until after the Super Bowl. Kubiak’s Niners lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 25-22 in overtime on Sunday.

Kubiak previously served as an offensive coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings in 2021 before becoming a quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator with the Denver Broncos in 2022. He also was an offensive quality control coach in his first stint with the Vikings (2013-14) and offensive assistant in his first go-round with the Broncos (2016-18).

The Saints fired longtime offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael on Jan. 16 after 18 seasons with the team.

New Orleans (9-8) finished 14th in total offense (337.2 average yards per game) and 21st in rushing offense (102.5) in 2023, missing out on the playoffs in a tiebreaker with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the NFC South Division title.

Kubiak will turn 37 on Feb. 17.

Reports: Bengals to promote Dan Pitcher to OC

The Cincinnati Bengals are poised to promote quarterbacks coach Dan Pitcher to offensive coordinator, NFL Network and The Athletic reported Wednesday.

Pitcher would replace Brian Callahan, who was named head coach by the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday.

Pitcher, 37, has been with the Bengals for eight seasons. He started as an offensive assistant under former head coach Marvin Lewis and was promoted to quarterbacks coach by Zac Taylor in 2020.

At least four other teams requested to interview Pitcher for their offensive coordinator position, including the New England Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders. Lewis is expected to join the new staff of Antonio Pierce in Las Vegas.
