NFL unveils new award: Protector of the Year

The NFL on Wednesday announced a new end-of-year annual honor that will be awarded to the league’s best offensive lineman, called Protector of the Year.

NFL executive Troy Vincent announced the award and credited Buffalo Bills four-time Pro Bowl lineman Dion Dawkins and retired two-time All-Pro Andrew Whitworth for pushing the idea.

“Recognize the big fellas,” Vincent said Wednesday at the NFL owners meetings in Eagan, Minn.

The winner will be decided by a panel that includes a number of former greats who played on the offensive line, Vincent said.

Giants place OL Joshua Ezeudu (toe) on IR; sign two O-linemen

The New York Giants’ offensive line troubles are only getting worse.

The Giants placed Joshua Ezeudu on injured reserve on Tuesday due to a toe injury he suffered Sunday night against the Buffalo Bills.

Ezeudu had started at left tackle for the Giants’ past five games, with All-Pro left tackle Andrew Thomas (hamstring) sidelined since the season opener. Rookie center John Michael Schmitz and tackle Matt Peart are working their way back from shoulder injuries.

For reinforcements, New York signed two offensive linemen off other teams’ practice squads: Tyre Phillips from the Philadelphia Eagles and Josh Miles from the Atlanta Falcons.

Phillips played in 12 games for the Giants last year, starting five. He’s served as a guard and a tackle for the Ravens (2020-21) and Giants since being drafted by Baltimore in the third round in 2020.

Miles played in 17 games for the Arizona Cardinals across the 2019 and 2021 seasons.

The Giants also re-signed offensive lineman Jalen Mayfield to their practice squad. He had been promoted to the active roster for Sunday’s 14-9 loss to the Bills.

Bucs’ Tristan Wirfs opens up about anxiety over move to LT

The transition from right tackle to left tackle created so much anxiety for Tampa Bay Buccaneers All-Pro Tristan Wirfs that he sought counsel from team sports psychologist Dr. Joe Carella.

Wirfs told reporters Friday that the move just feet down the line is a huge adjustment. He’ll be responsible for protecting his quarterback’s blind side and learning everything that goes with the shift — mentally and physically.

“It seems like so minuscule, like oh, you’re just flipping sides, but I was like having breakdowns about it,” Wirfs said. “I’m like, ‘I can’t sit here with these thoughts anymore. I’m just kind of setting myself up for failure.’ I would just think about, ‘I am going to [stink],’ or like, ‘I am not going to be able to do it,’ all day long.”

So he sought out Carella and now enters the season “just trying to keep those thoughts out as much as I can,” he said.

The move to the left side was necessitated when the Bucs cut Donovan Smith in March for financial reasons.

Tampa Bay selected Wirfs with the No. 13 overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft. The Iowa product played just four games at left tackle in college, and he’s started 46 NFL games at right tackle. He has been named to the Pro Bowl twice.

“I was in a really rough spot mentally,” Wirfs rold reporters. “I was really nervous. I was playing out the season in my head over and over again like, ‘Oh, what if it goes this way or what if it goes this way?’ So, I was like, ‘It is freaking May. You have to calm down.’ “

The Bucs, who finished 8-9 in 2022, enter the season full of more changes than Wirfs’ spot. They are transitioning from the retired Tom Brady at quarterback to either Baker Mayfield or Kyle Trask.

Wirfs and the Buccaneers open the 2023 season on Sept. 10 on the road against the Minnesota Vikings.

Reports: Commanders part with OL coach John Matsko

The Washington Commanders told offensive line coach John Matsko they were moving in a different direction with his position, multiple reports said Tuesday.

The move comes as new Washington offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy continues to fill out his staff of assistant coaches.

Matsko, 72, had been Washington’s offensive line coach since 2020. He has worked as an O-line coach in the NFL since 1992, serving in the same role for the then-Phoenix Cardinals (1992-93), New Orleans Saints (1994-96), New York Giants (1997-98), then-St. Louis Rams (1999-2005), Kansas City Chiefs (2006-07), Baltimore Ravens (2008-10) and Carolina Panthers (2011-19).

Matsko had stuck together with Commanders head coach Ron Rivera since 2011 between Carolina and Washington.

Falcons drawing the line at performance up front

In Arthur Smith’s eyes, the Atlanta Falcons’ game against the San Francisco 49ers Sunday was lost in the trenches.

En route to a 31-13 victory, the host 49ers sacked Matt Ryan three times and hit him 10 times while recording two tackles for loss and limiting Atlanta to 68 rushing yards, its lowest total in a month.

Whether it was run blocking or pass protection, the Falcons’ offensive line had to answer for a subpar performance.

“Certainly we felt in the last couple weeks we had been playing better,” Smith said Monday, citing the Falcons’ Week 14 victory over the Panthers. “I thought we went up there and played pretty well, especially up front. It was kind of the polar opposite this week. You look at going up to Carolina, I thought we played really well on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Go out to San Francisco, or Santa Clara, and they got after us on both sides of the line of scrimmage.

“We’ve made progress. Certainly (Sunday) wasn’t what we wanted. We’ll continue to work at, continue to look at every option on the table.”

The Falcons tried to use more play-action to get dual-threat playmaker Cordarrelle Patterson involved, but it was in vain. Patterson was held to 18 rushing yards on 11 attempts along with two receptions for 5 yards.

According to ESPN Stats and Info, Patterson was hit behind the line of scrimmage on seven of his 11 runs Sunday.

“When he’s back there at running back, whether you had Eric Dickerson or Walter Payton back there, you’re getting hit in the backfield,” Smith said. “Maybe Barry Sanders could make three guys miss back there, but that’s just stating the obvious there.

“It’s one thing after another. That’s what the game came down to, inside on the line of scrimmage, and credit to them. They had a say. We felt we’d been playing better. That’s the consistency you gotta bring in the NFL. That’s why you see all these crazy scores week in and week out. It’s the hardest thing to do, to sustain that level of play. But I have all the confidence in our guys that we’ll bounce back this week. They did a nice job, San Fran did, on both sides.”

The Falcons’ loss knocked them down to 6-8 and on the outside looking in at a crowded NFC wild-card hunt.

The 49ers moved into the conference’s No. 6 seed by beating Atlanta, while NFC South rival New Orleans Saints occupied the seventh and final playoff spot at 7-7 after a 9-0 win over the Buccaneers later Sunday night. Atlanta also has to contend with the Minnesota Vikings, who were 6-7 entering Monday night’s game, as well as the Washington Football Team and Philadelphia Eagles, both 6-7 before they were set to face off Tuesday.

Still, Ryan said after Sunday’s game that Atlanta had to hold up its end of the bargain and not worry about the external requirements to qualify for the postseason.

“So you’re saying there’s a chance?” he said. “Isn’t that the old movie line or whatever?”

Like Ryan, Smith has seen crazy things happen in his time in the NFL. His team is home Sunday, presented with a supposedly cupcake opponent next week in the 2-11-1 Detroit Lions, but the Falcons are just 1-5 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium this season. And the Lions are coming off a victory over the NFC West-leading Arizona Cardinals.

“Those things can snowball you and we’ve got to do something to change that narrative, certainly,” Smith said. “The most important thing, whether we were playing in Atlanta, Detroit, Barcelona, Cabo, we’ve got to get ready to play a good team and go out there and execute and play better up front.”

Four of five starting O-linemen miss practice for Patriots

Four of five starters on the offensive line missed practice Thursday for the New England Patriots.

Right tackle Trent Brown (calf) and right guard Shaq Mason (abdomen) missed practice with injuries while the left side of the line remains on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Left tackle Isaiah Wynn and guard Mike Onwenu can return to the team after recording two negative tests 24 hours apart, provided both are vaccinated.

As of Thursday, center David Andrews is the only healthy and available lineman.

Wynn and Mason have played all 265 offensive snaps so far this season while Onwenu has played 239.

Brown hasn’t played since Week 1.

Also, linebacker Kyle Van Noy (groin) and cornerback Shaun Wade (concussion) missed practice Thursday.

The Patriots (1-3) play at Houston (1-3) on Sunday.

Report: LSU offensive line decimated by COVID-19

All but four members of LSU’s offensive line tested positive for COVID-19 or have been classified as being of a high risk for exposure to the virus, according to a report.

The Advocate in Baton Rouge, La., reported Wednesday that as a result, the team can’t put a full offensive line on the field in practice as the players quarantine.

The SEC requires that players who test positive must be quarantined for at least 10 days, while those with high-risk exposure must be isolated for two full weeks.

While The Advocate said the athletic department has declined to confirm the number of student-athletes impacted by COVID-19, the school website has posted campus wide numbers. In the past seven days, LSU has had 27 positive cases and 47 in all since Aug. 15.

The Tigers have a month for their players to return to health. They are scheduled to host Mississippi State in the season opener on Sept. 26.
