Report: Vikings, CB Jeff Okudah agree to 1-year deal

The Minnesota Vikings and cornerback Jeff Okudah, a former first-round pick, agreed to a one-year contract on Tuesday.

That’s according to agent Kevin Conner, the CEO of Universal Sports and Management, ESPN reported. No financial terms were disclosed.

Okudah, 26, is returning to the NFC North, where he started his career with the Detroit Lions, who selected him No. 3 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Due to multiple injuries, he appeared in just 25 games (22 starts) over three seasons in Detroit. He followed that tenure with one year with the Atlanta Falcons (13 games, nine starts) and one with the Houston Texans (six games, no starts).

Over his career, Okudah has two interceptions for 56 yards and a touchdown, as well as 177 tackles and 14 passes defensed.

Packers RB Aaron Jones, WR Christian Watson inactive vs. Falcons

Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones, wide receiver Christian Watson and left tackle David Bakhtiari were ruled inactive for Sunday’s game against the host Atlanta Falcons.

Jones, 28, sustained a hamstring injury at the end of his 35-yard touchdown catch and run in Green Bay’s 38-20 victory over the Chicago Bears on Sunday. He finished with nine carries for 41 yards and a score and two receptions for 86 yards and a touchdown.

Fellow running back A.J. Dillon likely will see a boost in playing time with Jones sidelined.

Watson, 24, was an early second-round pick of the Packers in the 2022 draft and entered his sophomore season as the team’s No. 1 wideout. He did not play in the season opener due to his hamstring injury.

Watson recorded 41 catches for 611 yards and seven touchdowns in 14 games (11 starts) as a rookie in 2022.

Bakhtiari, 31, is nursing a knee injury. The three-time Pro Bowl and two-time All-Pro first-team selection has made 130 regular season starts for Green Bay, although a knee injury limited him to one start in 2021 and 11 in 2022.

The Packers also listed safeties Anthony Johnson Jr. and Zayne Anderson, linebacker Brenton Cox Jr. and tackle Caleb Jones as inactive.

For the Falcons, versatile running back Cordarrelle Patterson, cornerback Jeff Okudah, Logan Woodside (emergency third quarterback), linebacker Troy Andersen, offensive lineman Jovaughn Gwyn, wide receiver Josh Ali and defensive lineman Joe Gaziano are also inactive.

Lions coach Dan Campbell: Newcomers made CB Jeff Okudah expendable

Lions head coach Dan Campbell liked the newcomers signed in free agency and Detroit’s returning depth at cornerback so much that he felt former No. 3 overall pick Jeff Okudah was better off being dealt to the Atlanta Falcons.

Campbell said the Lions aren’t necessarily keying in on a cornerback with the No. 6 overall pick in the April 27 draft, and he praised the additions made by general manager Brad Holmes for sprucing up the secondary.

The Lions signed cornerback Cameron Sutton, safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and defensive back Emmanuel Moseley to shore up the pass defense. Moseley is coming back from a torn ACL.

“We knew we wanted to upgrade the secondary and we’ve been pleased with the upgrades that we’ve made, man,” Campbell said on the Rich Eisen Show. “Bringing in Sutton and Moseley, and then getting C.J. Johnson from Philadelphia, we feel like we really beefed up that area. And we still got Jerry Jacobs, we got Will Harris back. So we’ve got a group and we just felt pretty good with the additions we made.”

Holmes and Campbell were hired after Okudah was already in Detroit. The Ohio State product was drafted No. 3 overall in 2020, three spots ahead of Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert and 19 spots higher than wide receiver Justin Jefferson (22nd overall, Minnesota Vikings).

“We really felt like, at this time, this is probably the best thing for us and for Jeff,” Okudah said. “A new change of scenery and give him a fresh start. We felt really good about our guys. And, look, man, I appreciate Jeff. He was a pro, he came to work, he busted his ass. He worked at it. He was coming off an injury last year and we just felt like, ‘You know what, this is the right thing to do right now.’”

Detroit dealt Okudah to the Falcons for a fifth-round draft pick. While his play was improved in 2022 in the view of defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, injuries have been a major factor for Okudah throughout his career.

In 2022, Okudah suffered a concussion in Week 11, missed Week 12 and was benched Week 17 against the Chicago Bears before not playing in the regular-season finale at Green Bay.

A former standout NFL cornerback with the Jets, Glenn said after the 2022 season that he told Okudah that “he has to improve. … There is always going to be peaks and valleys when you play that position. You try to stay at the top as much as you can. But it’s hard. It’s hard. But I’ll tell you what, he is busting his butt. His trying his butt off to be at that top of the peak all the time.”

The move likely came after input from new senior defensive assistant John Fox, the former NFL head coach who was hired to serve as a veteran set of eyes for Campbell — drafted by the Giants when Fox was defensive coordinator in 1999 — and Glenn.

Lions lose CB Jeff Okudah to season-ending Achilles injury

Detroit Lions cornerback Jeff Okudah ruptured his Achilles in the Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

Okudah is lost for the season with the injury suffered in the fourth quarter on Sunday with the Lions trailing 41-17.

The third overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Okudah impressed the first-year coaching staff in Detroit after experiencing growing pains as a rookie, prompted in part by a core muscle injury.

NFL Network reported early Monday that coach Dan Campbell’s postgame expectation that Okudah had an Achilles injury was confirmed via MRI exam.

The Lions face the Green Bay Packers in Week 2.

Lions’ Golladay doubtful, Okudah questionable for Week 1

Detroit Lions wide receiver Kenny Golladay is listed as doubtful for the season opener against the Chicago Bears on Sunday due to a hamstring injury.

Matthew Stafford’s top target in 2019, Golladay was limited on Wednesday and unable to practice Thursday and Friday.

Golladay had 65 receptions for 1,190 yards and 11 touchdowns last season.

The Lions also listed wide receiver Danny Amendola as questionable with a hamstring injury. Amendola was limited in all three practices this week.

Rookie No. 3 overall pick Jeff Okudah also has a hamstring injury and is questionable after being limited Thursday and Friday with the issue that arose Wednesday.

Offensive tackle Halapoulivaati Vaitai (foot), safety C.J Moore (hamstring) and tight end Hunter Bryant (hamstring) are out for the Lions.
