Saints pick up option for Chris Olave, not Trevor Penning

The New Orleans Saints are picking up the fifth-year option for wideout Chris Olave but not for their other 2022 first-round pick, offensive tackle Trevor Penning.

General manager Mickey Loomis confirmed the moves during Wednesday’s pre-draft press conference and also provided an update on quarterback Derek Carr’s health.

“He does have an issue with his shoulder,” Loomis said. “We’re hoping to get some resolution and some clarity on that in the near future. And when we do, I’ll report back to you. Otherwise, I don’t have anything more on Derek.”

Carr, 34, has not been seen around the team facility since news of his shoulder injury broke on April 11, three days before the start of voluntary offseason workouts.

The Saints selected Olave with the 11th overall pick and Penning with the 19th in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Olave, 24, began his career with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons before missing nine games in 2024 with multiple concussions. He has 191 catches for 2,565 yards and 10 touchdowns in 39 games (28 starts).

Olave will earn $15.49 million in 2026 under the fifth-year option.

Penning, who turns 26 next month, started all 17 games last season and has started 23 of 40 games overall.

With the Saints declining his $16.69 million option for 2026, Penning will play the final season of his rookie deal in 2025.

Report: WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling to visit Saints

Wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling will travel to New Orleans to visit the Saints on Monday, NFL Network reported.

Valdes-Scantling was released by Buffalo on Tuesday after the Bills acquired five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Amari Cooper from the Cleveland Browns.

The Saints could use some help in the wide receiver room with Rashid Shaheed undergoing season-ending meniscus surgery on Thursday and star Chris Olave dealing with a concussion.

Shaheed played the first six games of the season for New Orleans, starting five and making 20 catches. He leads the Saints in receiving yards (349) and touchdown receptions (three).

Olave has 29 catches for 280 yards and one touchdown in six games in 2024.

Valdes-Scantling, 30, has two receptions on nine targets for 26 yards in six games as a reserve this season.

Valdez-Scantling has 188 receptions for 3,181 yards in 98 career games (60 starts) for the Green Bay Packers (2018-21), Kansas City Chiefs (2022-23) and Bills.

The Packers selected him in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

The Saints (2-5) have dropped five consecutive games after losing 33-10 to the Denver Broncos on Thursday. They will face the Los Angeles Chargers on the road next Sunday.

Saints QB Derek Carr (oblique) formally inactive vs. Broncos

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr is among his team’s inactives for Thursday night’s home game against the Denver Broncos.

Carr (oblique) is missing his second straight game. He was listed as doubtful to play.

Denver star cornerback Patrick Surtain II (concussion) is among the Broncos’ inactives. His chances of playing were bleak after being hurt four days earlier against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Also inactive for Denver (3-3) were cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine, outside linebacker Dondrea Tillman, defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike, offensive tackle Alex Palczewski and tight end Greg Dulcich. Zach Wilson is denoted as the emergency third quarterback.

Offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey (knee), linebacker Baron Browning (foot) and cornerback Damarri Mathis (ankle) were activated off injured reserve for the game.

Receiver Chris Olave (concussion) and tight end Tayson Hill (ribs) are among the other inactives for New Orleans (2-4). Also on the list are running back Jordan Mims, offensive lineman Cesar Ruiz, defensive tackle Khalen Saunders and linebacker Pete Werner.

Rookie Spencer Rattler is making his second career start in place of Carr. Rattler was intercepted twice while throwing for 243 yards and one touchdown in his debut, a 51-27 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Sunday.

Saints rule out Chris Olave for TNF; surgery for Rashid Shaheed

The New Orleans Saints will play without their top two wide receivers Thursday night — and possibly beyond.

On Wednesday, the team ruled Chris Olave out against the visiting Denver Broncos due to a concussion and announced that Rashid Shaheed will undergo knee surgery.

The short week made it tough for Olave to clear concussion protocol, while Shaheed needs meniscus surgery. During surgery, a decision will be made whether to trim the meniscus or whether it requires a full repair. The latter would end Shaheed’s season.

Olave, 24, was injured on a helmet-to-helmet hit during the first quarter of Sunday’s 51-27 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He fumbled after the hit by safety Tykee Smith and the ball was recovered and returned 58 yards for a touchdown by Antoine Winfield Jr.

Olave ranks second on the Saints (2-4) in both receptions (23) and receiving yards (280) through six starts. The 2022 first-round pick eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first two seasons.

Shaheed, 26, leads the Saints in targets (41), yards (349) and touchdown receptions (three). The speedster is also averaging a league-best 15.9 yards per punt return and 28.5 yards per kick return, good for seventh in the NFL. He also returned a punt for a touchdown this season.

New Orleans’ top available receivers against the Broncos (3-3) and former coach Sean Payton include Bub Means, Cedrick Wilson Jr. and Mason Tipton.

Saints WR Chris Olave (concussion) cleared for TNF

Saints rookie wide receiver Chris Olave cleared NFL concussion protocol and plans to suit up Thursday night when New Orleans visits the Arizona Cardinals.

Olave missed Week 6 with a concussion as the Saints were working without their top three receivers. Michael Thomas and Jarvis Landry are not expected to be ready to go Thursday.

Thomas (foot), Landry (ankle), cornerback Marshon Lattimore (abdomen) and offensive guard Andrus Peat (chest) were all absent from the Tuesday portion of practice open to the media.

The Saints have used 34 different starters in six games and enter Thursday’s game with original starting quarterback Jameis Winston and backup Andy Dalton on the injury report due to back injuries. Winston is also slowed by an ankle injury.

Olave was a first-round pick in April and leads the Saints with 25 receptions for 389 yards and also has two touchdowns despite sitting out the 30-26 loss to Cincinnati last week.

Saints’ Jameis Winston back at practice; Michael Thomas sits

Quarterback Jameis Winston returned to practice for New Orleans on Wednesday but Michael Thomas was among a host of Saints — including all three starting wideouts — sidelined in the first practice of the week.

Both Winston (back, ankle) and Thomas (foot) missed the Saints’ past two games with their respective injuries. Winston was reportedly playing through four fractured vertebrae before being sidelined.

Andy Dalton has gone 1-1 as the starter in place of Winston.

While Winston was listed as limited in practice, six other players joined Thomas on the did-not-participate list: WRs Deonte Harty (foot), Jarvis Landry (ankle) and rookie Chris Olave (concussion), cornerback Marshon Lattimore (abdomen), defensive end Payton Turner (chest) and tackle Calvin Throckmorton (hip).

Thomas, Olave and Landry all start for the Saints. Tre’Quan Smith and Marquez Callaway were the only healthy wideouts on the 53-man roster at practice Wednesday. Landry also missed last week’s game.

Saints head coach Dennis Allen wouldn’t make any predictions on whether Winston will be back under center this week against visiting Cincinnati.

“It’s another step in the right direction,” Allen said.

Winston is 1-2 as the starter this season, completing 63.5 percent of his passes for 858 yards. He has four touchdowns against five interceptions.

Dalton has thrown for 423 yards, with two touchdowns and one pick in two games.
