Virginia Tech out to avoid slumber in second half vs. Old Dominion

Given the way that Virginia Tech flatlined in the second half of a humiliating loss last week, the Hokies might want to consider shifting their signature pregame hype song “Enter Sandman” to halftime.

Playlists aside, the Hokies (0-2) will look to play a complete game on Saturday when they host Old Dominion (1-1) in Blacksburg, Va.

In its two losses to Southeastern Conference programs, Virginia Tech has been outscored by a combined 48-3 in the second half.

In their season opener on Aug. 31, the Hokies surrendered two touchdowns in the fourth quarter of a 24-11 loss to South Carolina.

One week later, Virginia Tech saw a 10-point halftime lead go by the boards after surrendering 34 straight points.

The Commodores dominated the Hokies at the line of scrimmage, evidenced by a 321-21 advantage in yardage in the second half.

“I didn’t question effort,” Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry said on Tuesday. “I did question if the guys were tired.”

With a 16-23 record in his four seasons, pressure is ramping up on Pry, who now faces an Old Dominion opponent that handed him a humbling defeat in his first game as Virginia Tech’s head coach.

In the 20-17 road loss in 2022, the Hokies committed five turnovers and 15 penalties totaling 121 yards.

Pry expects a similar test on Saturday from the Monarchs and quarterback Colton Joseph.

Last week in a 54-6 romp over FCS North Carolina Central, Joseph threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns. In Old Dominion’s opener, Joseph rushed for 179 yards and two scores as the Monarchs kept it close against then-No. 20 Indiana in a 27-14 loss.

“He’s a competitor. He’s a quality runner,” Pry said. “They’re challenging.”

Virginia Tech aims to answer with its own dual-threat quarterback Kyron Drones. He threw for one touchdown and ran for another score to stake the Hokies to their lead versus Vanderbilt before he was swarmed by the Commodores defense in the second half.

On Monday, Old Dominion coach Ricky Rahne was asked about facing a “desperate” Hokies squad.

“I think it’s more about their talent,” Rahne said. “You just don’t want to lose. It doesn’t matter what your record is.”

Virginia Tech hasn’t opened a season 0-3 since 1992.

Old Dominion announced this week that linebacker Jason Henderson, who led the nation in average tackles per game in 2022 and 2023, is stepping away from football after sustaining a devastating knee injury last year.

Indiana's Roman Hemby (1) during the Indiana versus Old Dominion football game at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2025.

No. 20 Indiana overcomes slow start to defeat Old Dominion

New quarterback Fernando Mendoza rushed for a touchdown, new running back Roman Hemby added 110 yards on the ground, and No. 20 Indiana shrugged off a sluggish start Saturday for a 27-14 win over Old Dominion in Bloomington, Ind.

Second-year coach Curt Cignetti saw his team win its opener for the second straight year, although it couldn’t put the Monarchs away in their opener. The Hoosiers’ 309 rushing yards were on brand with last year’s 11-2 team, and Indiana controlled the ball for 41:28 but managed only one second-half touchdown.

Old Dominion quarterback Colton Joseph accounted for most of his team’s offense with touchdown runs of 75 and 78 yards. He rushed for 179 yards on 10 carries and completed 11 of 22 passes for 96 yards but was intercepted three times.

Joseph’s legs got the Monarchs on the board to start the game as he raced 75 yards on the first play. That lead held nearly the entire first quarter until Indiana changed the momentum via the kicking game.

Jonathan Brady returned a punt 91 yards to the end zone with nine seconds left in the quarter to tie the score. The Hoosiers took the lead for good on their next possession, settling for Nico Radicic’s 22-yard field goal at the 10:03 mark of the second quarter.

Mendoza, who threw for 193 yards on 18-of-31 accuracy, made it 17-7 when he ran 5 yards for a touchdown with 3:36 remaining.

Indiana extended the lead to 27-7 in the third quarter. Kaelon Black powered in from the 2 to cap a 75-yard drive that opened the second half, and Radicic tacked on a 25-yard field goal at the 3:02 mark.

The Monarchs’ Joseph finished the scoring with a 78-yard touchdown run with 6:53 remaining in the game. That also was Old Dominion’s final snap of the day as the Hoosiers melted the remaining time with a 12-play drive that ended at the Monarchs’ 11.

Head Coach Curt Cignetti at Indiana University football practice on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2025.

No. 20 Indiana looks to build off successful 2024 in season opener vs. ODU

Indiana enjoyed a program-defining season in 2024, earning a College Football Playoff bid while racking up a school-record 11 victories, including a program-best eight in Big Ten play.

While much of the personnel has changed for the 20th-ranked Hoosiers, coach Curt Cignetti still expects Indiana to keep moving forward, beginning with Saturday’s opener against Old Dominion in Bloomington, Ind.

“You’re establishing the habits that are going to carry you through the season. Installing, developing players and learning about your team,” Cignetti said. “Now it’s time to go to war. It’s serious business now.”

Indiana will look to new faces at many offensive skill positions, including quarterback, where Cal transfer Fernando Mendoza aims to build on a 2024 season in which he passed for 3,004 yards and 16 touchdowns while starting 11 games.

Transfers also figure to feature in the Hoosiers’ quest to replace running backs Justice Ellison and Ty Son Lawton.

Cignetti said this week that Roman Hemby (Maryland) and Lee Beebe Jr. (Alabama-Birmingham) will join Kaelon Black in splitting the carries against Old Dominion. While Black played under Cignetti at James Madison, Hemby brings the most seasoning.

Hemby started 38 of the 41 games in which he appeared during four seasons at Maryland. Although he logged just one 100-yard rushing game in 2024, Hemby has already shown his versatility to the Memorial Stadium faithful. He contributed a rushing and receiving TD during the Terrapins’ 42-28 road loss to the Hoosiers in September.

Indiana’s health appears to be encouraging on both sides of the ball.

“During camp, we did have some guys in and out defensively at times, and one offensive lineman missed a little time but is healthy now,” Cignetti said. “Overall, I’m pleased with where we’re at.”

Old Dominion finished 5-7 last season but narrowly lost at South Carolina in its 2024 season opener.

Cignetti emphasized to players the final score of that game, 23-19, as well as the importance of remaining motivated and prepared no matter the opponent.

“It’s all about us and our preparation, having the right mindset, and going out there and playing our brand of ball with a bunch of new faces,” Cignetti said.

Monarchs head coach Ricky Rahne has matched Xs and Os with Cignetti before when he was at James Madison, losing 37-3 in 2022 and 30-27 in 2023.

Old Dominion quarterback Colton Joseph was recently named to the Manning Award watch list. The versatile Joseph, who both passed and rushed for 11 touchdowns last season, is eager for the challenge ahead.

“Anytime you’re going to play a team that’s a Power Four team, that’s always a great opportunity to go and show what we can do and definitely put ODU on the map,” Joseph said.

Added Rahne: “Our guys want to play in these environments because this is what college football’s about. … When you’re a little kid in the backyard and you’re throwing or catching a game-winning touchdown pass, that’s the environment you imagine.”

Virginia Tech runs wild for win over Old Dominion

Bhayshul Tuten ran for 115 yards and scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns as Virginia Tech ran away from Old Dominion and exorcized a demon on Saturday in a 37-17 victory in Norfolk, Va.

Kyron Drones rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. He also completed 15 of 26 passes for 176 yards and another score as the Hokies (2-1) won in Norfolk after suffering two losses to the Monarchs (0-3) there in the past seven years.

Jaylin Lane caught seven passes for 106 yards and a touchdown for Virginia Tech, which led for the whole game after scoring on its first two possessions.

Antwaun Powell-Ryland had four sacks and two forced fumbles to lead a Virginia Tech defense that limited Old Dominion to 293 yards of total offense and 11 first downs.

Old Dominion’s offense was hampered by the absence of starting quarterback Grant Wilson, who was sidelined with a wrist injury.

Colton Joseph and Quinn Henicle, neither of whom had attempted a collegiate pass, took over for the Monarchs and combined for six completions on 14 attempts for 50 yards.

Former Virginia Tech running back Bryce Duke rushed for 85 yards on just four carries to lead the Old Dominion offense.

After leading 14-10 at the break, the Hokies scored the first 23 points of the second half. In the third quarter, the Monarchs had just one first down and 0 total yards of offense.

In addition to Tuten’s touchdown runs of 16 and 22 yards, John Love booted three field goals in the second half for the visitors.

Virginia Tech started fast, propelled by the Drones-to-Lane connection. Lane’s 25-yard touchdown reception put the Hokies up 7-0 before the game was three minutes old.

Later in the first quarter, Drones turned a potential loss on a botched shotgun snap into a big gain when he shoveled a pass to Lane, who sprinted up the sideline for 46 yards.

Six plays later, on fourth down, Drones’ teammates pushed him into the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown that gave the Hokies a 14-0 lead.

The Monarchs responded, as Henicle fooled the Hokies with a fake handoff and rolled around the right side for a 65-yard touchdown run to cut Old Dominion’s deficit in half with 13:13 left in the second quarter.

After Old Dominion’s Ricardo Williams Jr. blocked a Virginia Tech field goal, the Monarchs got three points when Ethan Sanchez connected on a kick from 28 yards out to make it 14-10.

South Carolina avoids upset bid by Old Dominion

LaNorris Sellers ran for a go-ahead 3-yard touchdown with 6:11 to play as host South Carolina survived an upset scare from visiting Old Dominion, winning 23-19 on Saturday at Columbia, S.C.

In the season opener for both teams, the winning score was set up when DeAndre Jules recovered an Old Dominion fumble at the 6-yard line. It was the second time a South Carolina scoring chance was set up by a turnover deep in Monarchs’ territory.

Old Dominion scored 12 straight points to burst into the lead.

Sellers rushed for 68 yards and threw for 114 yards in his first career start.

Old Dominion’s Grant Wilson was 22-for-38 passing for 197 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions, while two of his four fumbles also resulted in turnovers.

Isiah Paige caught eight passes for 115 yards and one touchdown for the Monarchs.

After falling behind 23-19, Old Dominion had two more possessions and neither time did the Monarchs reach South Carolina territory. Jalon Kilgore intercepted Wilson with 1:29 to play to clinch the outcome.

The Gamecocks racked up 174 rushing yards, led by Raheim Sanders’ 88 on 24 carries.

Ethan Sanchez booted a 33-yard field goal with 9:54 to play to push the Monarchs to a 19-16 edge. The kick following a blocked South Carolina punt that put Old Dominion in South Carolina territory.

That came after the Gamecocks stretched their lead to 16-7 on Alex Herrera’s third field goal of the game midway through the third quarter.

But in a span of less than five minutes, Wilson ran 36 yards for a touchdown (with the extra-point kick blocked) and the Monarchs pulled even on Sanchez’s 40-yard field goal with 14 seconds to play in the third quarter.

With South Carolina leading 10-7 early in the second quarter, the game entered a weather delay. Herrera’s 46-yard field goal marked the only scoring in the second quarter, putting the Gamecocks up 13-7.

South Carolina’s Kyle Kennard sacked Wilson, who fumbled, on the game’s second snap. Taking over at the Monarchs’ 3-yard line, the Gamecocks needed three plays for a touchdown on Sanders’ 1-yard run.

Just 31 seconds later, Wilson pulled the Monarchs even with a 72-yard pass to Paige.

South Carolina followed with a drive that lasted 13 plays and just over six minutes, settling for Herrera’s 40-yard field goal.

W. Kentucky rallies to stun Old Dominion in Famous Toastery Bowl

Caden Veltkamp came off the bench to pass for 383 yards and five touchdowns and Western Kentucky overcame a 28-point deficit to notch a 38-35 overtime victory over Old Dominion on Monday afternoon at the Famous Toastery Bowl in Charlotte, N.C.

Lucas Carneiro kicked the decisive 29-yard field goal on the Hilltoppers’ first overtime possession to end it. The kick came after Talique Allen blocked a 23-yard field-goal attempt by Ethan Sanchez on Old Dominion’s possession.

Veltkamp completed 40 of 52 passes with one interception and also rushed for a team-high 53 yards for Western Kentucky (8-5). Dalvin Smith caught three touchdown passes, two of them one-handed, for the Hilltoppers.

Grant Wilson rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 123 yards and a TD for Old Dominion (6-7). Kris Caine returned an interception for a touchdown but the Monarchs failed to win despite forcing five turnovers.

Western Kentucky quarterback Austin Reed opted out of the contest and Veltkamp led a late-game charge with 21 fourth-quarter points to force overtime.

The Hilltoppers pulled within 35-21 when Elijah Young caught a short pass, hurdled a defender and ran down the right sideline for a 37-yard scoring play with 14:09 remaining in regulation.

Less than 4 1/2 minutes later, the Hilltoppers moved within seven when Smith — using two hands — grabbed a 14-yard touchdown pass from Veltkamp.

Western Kentucky knotted the score with 19 seconds left when Veltkamp threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to K.D. Hutchinson on fourth-and-goal.

Old Dominion forced four first-half turnovers while taking early control of the contest.

The Monarchs drove 89 yards on five plays on the game-opening drive for the early lead. Wilson’s 79-yard keeper set up the score and he completed the excursion with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Isiah Page.

Turner Helton drew the start for Western Kentucky with Reed sitting out, and he made miscues on his two possessions before being pulled.

First, Helton was sacked by Denzel Lowry and fumbled the ball and it was recovered by LaMareon James as Old Dominion took over at the Hilltoppers’ 17-yard line. Four plays later, Kadarius Calloway scored from the 5 to make it 14-0 with 9:06 left in the opening quarter.

Just 1:12 later, the Monarchs held a 21-point lead as Caine intercepted Helton and returned it 30 yards for a score.

Old Dominion pushed the lead to 28-0 when Wilson scored on an 11-yard run with 13:38 left in the first half.

Western Kentucky got on the board with 8:14 left in the half when Smith made a one-handed touchdown grab on a 14-yard toss from Veltkamp.

Smith’s second stellar grab came on an 18-yard touchdown pass to pull the Hilltoppers within 28-14 with 10:24 left in the third quarter.

Old Dominion answered on Wilson’s 21-yard scoring run to take a 35-14 lead with 3:04 left in the quarter.

No. 25 James Madison unbeaten after holding off Old Dominion

Jordan McCloud passed for 340 yards and three touchdowns as No. 25 James Madison held off visiting Old Dominion for a 30-27 win in their Sun Belt Conference matchup Saturday in Harrisonburg, Va.

McCloud completed 27 of 40 passes with two interceptions as the newly ranked Dukes (8-0, 5-0 Sun Belt) won their 11th straight game dating to last year.

Reggie Brown caught nine passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns and Elijah Sarratt added eight receptions for 139 yards and one score as James Madison thrived with its no-huddle, up-tempo offense.

A year ago, when James Madison cracked the top 25 for the first time in program history, it lost its next three games.

As a second-year team in the Football Bowl Subdivision, after promotion from the Football Championship Subdivision, the Dukes are not eligible for a conference title or a bowl game.

Grant Wilson completed 26 of 36 passes for 277 yards and two touchdowns without an interception for Old Dominion (4-4, 3-2).

Against James Madison’s defense, which is allowing only 49 yards per game on the ground, Keshawn Wicks carried 11 times for 74 yards and Kadarius Calloway added 65 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.

The Monarchs trailed 30-17 late in the third quarter before staging their comeback.

Calloway capped a 75-yard drive with a 21-yard touchdown run to make it 30-24.

Then after Old Dominion stopped James Madison on a fourth-and-1 and took over on their own 42, the Monarchs drove to the Dukes’ 4 before settling for a 23-yard field goal by Ethan Sanchez that cut the deficit to 30-27.

But on Old Dominion’s final three possessions, the James Madison defense bottled the Monarchs up in their own territory.

James Madison’s Jalen Green stopped one of the drives as he threw Wilson for a loss on third down. Then on the final play of the game, Mikail Kamara sacked Wilson.

In the first half, after Shawn Asbury intercepted McCloud’s second pass of the game, Sanchez kicked a 22-yard field goal.

McCloud responded, throwing a 49-yard touchdown pass to Brown and adding a 1-yard touchdown run to give the Dukes a 14-3 lead.

In the third quarter, McCloud threw touchdown passes of 3 yards to Sarratt and 21 yards to Brown as James Madison increased its edge to 30-17.

Mitch Griffis helps Wake Forest rally past Old Dominion

Mitch Griffis threw three touchdown passes and Wake Forest overcame a 17-point deficit to defeat host Old Dominion 27-24 on Saturday afternoon at Norfolk, Va.

Wake Forest (3-0) seized its first lead of the game with 6:48 remaining on Griffis’ 4-yard touchdown pass to Jahmal Banks. The touchdown pass came just two plays after the Demon Deacons recovered a fumble at the Old Dominion 6-yard line.

Griffis, who threw two touchdown passes to Taylor Morin, finished 24-for-41 for 312 yards with two interceptions.

LaMareon James scored two touchdowns on returns off turnovers for Old Dominion (1-2). Quarterback Grant Wilson threw for 233 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Old Dominion racked up 277 first-half yards but only 23 after intermission.

Wake Forest produced its key turnover on Jacob Roberts’ sack of Wilson to set up the go-ahead touchdown. The Monarchs had two more possessions, but never picked up another first down.

The Demon Deacons didn’t score until Morin’s 27-yard touchdown reception from Griffis on the eighth snap of the second half.

The momentum didn’t carry to the next time Wake Forest had the ball because James picked off Griffis and went 66 yards for a touchdown and a 24-7 lead.

Matthew Dennis kicked two field goals from 36 yards out before the end of the third quarter.

The Demon Deacons closed within 24-20 after Griffis and Morin hooked up for a 48-yard touchdown play to complete another eight-play drive, this one covering 86 yards.

Old Dominion led 17-0 at halftime despite a rather uninspiring opening stretch. On their first four possessions, the Monarchs had three punts and a missed field goal.

But they got cranked up when Javon Harvey went 68 yards on a pass from Wilson less than two minutes into the second quarter.

That was followed by James’ 80-yard return of a fumble for a touchdown. Ethan Sanchez connected from 49 yards out for a field goal with 2:27 to play in the half.

Wake Forest posted only 107 yards of total offense in the first half.

Wake Forest presents another ACC test for Old Dominion

There’s a lot to gain for Wake Forest and host Old Dominion when the teams meet Saturday afternoon in Norfolk, Va.

This will be the first road game for Wake Forest (2-0), while Old Dominion (1-1) will play its second opponent from the Atlantic Coast Conference after losing at Virginia Tech in the season opener.

“You just don’t get very many of these opportunities,” Old Dominion coach Ricky Rahne said of being the home team against an opponent from a Power 5 conference. “A lot of teams don’t get these opportunities. To be able to have opportunities like this is awesome and it’s something we need to take advantage of.”

Wake Forest has been well-rounded in victories against Elon and Vanderbilt. Coach Dave Clawson, who has seen a decrease in mental miscues, was encouraged to witness improvement from one game to the next.

“I think that’s where we probably had the most growth,” Clawson said. “We had less missed signals. We had fewer missed assignments.”

Wake Forest quarterback Mitch Griffis, who is from Northern Virginia, will make his fourth career start.

Rahne said the Demon Deacons’ offense is tailored to suit various quarterbacks, so even with Sam Hartman moving on, there will be challenges for the Monarchs.

“Multiple different quarterbacks can operate it,” Rahne said. “Mitch Griffis has done a great job and he has shown that he has the tools and the know-how to do it. I don’t think that has changed anything.”

The Monarchs defeated visiting Louisiana 38-31 last week as transfer quarterback Grant Wilson threw four touchdown passes in his home debut.

Old Dominion received a big boost from linebacker Jason Henderson, the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week, as he made 17 tackles — the third-most by a Football Bowl Subdivision player this season.

The Monarchs hope the offensive line can continue its strong physical play as the season progresses.

“I think that helped establish an identity for our entire offense,” Rahne said.

The Demon Deacons and Monarchs have met only once before with Wake Forest winning 42-10 at home to open the 2021 season.

Ali Jennings helps Virginia Tech knock off Old Dominion

Playing against his former team, Ali Jennings caught two of Grant Wells’ three touchdown passes as Virginia Tech avenged a season-opening loss from a year ago by defeating Old Dominion 36-17 on Saturday night in Blacksburg, Va.

Jennings switched teams through the transfer portal after last season. He had five catches for 72 yards on Saturday.

Jaylin Lane, a transfer from Middle Tennessee, also caught a touchdown pass for the Hokies (1-0).

Wells, who also ran for a touchdown, went 17-for-29 passing for 251 yards.

Old Dominion quarterback Grant Wilson was 13-for-25 for 94 yards with two TDs and an interception. He also gained 81 yards on 19 carries. The Monarchs (0-1), who managed 295 yards of total offense, had three turnovers.

Both teams had three wins last season.

Wilson’s 5-yard pass to Keshawn Wicks allowed the Monarchs to close within 23-17 in the third quarter. Virginia Tech responded by going 65 yards in eight plays for a touchdown on Wells’ 1-yard run.

The only points in the fourth quarter came on field goals of 27 and 21 yards from Virginia Tech’s John Love.

Virginia Tech’s Bhayshul Tuten, a transfer from North Carolina A&T, was the team’s top rusher with 55 yards on 19 carries.

The Hokies held a 16-10 halftime lead, with Old Dominion closing the gap on Ethan Sanchez’s 28-yard field goal on the last play of the second quarter.

Virginia Tech led 2-0 after the first quarter, courtesy of a wayward snap in punt formation by the Monarchs. The Hokies held a 73-0 edge in total offense in the quarter.

Wells threw 20 yards to Lane for the game’s first touchdown, as the Hokies went 55 yards in 10 plays.

Old Dominion got on the board with Wilson’s 16-yard scoring strike to Dominic Dutton with 9:34 left in the first half.

Wells and Jennings hooked up for a 10-yard touchdown play with 2:10 left in the half, but that was enough time for the Monarchs to score again.
