Thinking of next year? NFL finalizes opponents for 2025

For fans of the 18 NFL teams that did not reach the playoffs, it’s understandable to spend Black Monday thinking about next year.

The 2024 regular season concluded Sunday with the Detroit Lions’ 31-9 victory over the Minnesota Vikings to secure both the NFC North title and the top playoff seed in the conference. When that game was complete, the league was able to finalize the list of opponents for every team in 2025.

In the 17-game scheduling formula, three games on each team’s schedule are based on the prior season’s standings. Two intraconference opponents and one interconference opponent are determined by where teams placed in their divisions the year before.

As usual, each team will play six division games, four games against a division within its conference and another four games against a division from the opposite conference.

Below are the 2025 opponents for every team, listed by division. The schedule itself will be announced sometime this spring.

NFL announces 2024 home/away opponents

The NFL formally announced each team’s regular-season opponents for 2024 on Friday.

The schedule itself, with dates, times and television designations, won’t be revealed until the spring, but the league’s scheduling formula arranges which divisions will face off every season.

In addition to six games against a team’s own division (three home, three away), teams also face the four teams of another division within the conference and the four teams of a division from the opposite conference. Two intraconference opponents and one interconference foe based on last season’s standings round out a team’s 17-game slate.

In 2024, the AFC East will face the AFC South, and the AFC North will play the AFC West; the NFC East will meet the NFC South, and the NFC North will tangle with the NFC West.

In the interconference category, the AFC East will face the NFC West; the AFC North will meet the NFC East; the AFC South will be pitted against the NFC North; and the AFC West will see the NFC South on their schedules.

The so-called 17th games are going into their third year in the NFL’s scheduling formula. This year, the NFC teams will host each of these games, which are as follows:

–Buffalo Bills at Detroit Lions
–Miami Dolphins at Green Bay Packers
–New York Jets at Minnesota Vikings
–New England Patriots at Chicago Bears
–Baltimore Ravens at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
–Cleveland Browns at New Orleans Saints
–Pittsburgh Steelers at Atlanta Falcons
–Cincinnati Bengals at Carolina Panthers
–Houston Texans at Dallas Cowboys
–Jacksonville Jaguars at Philadelphia Eagles
–Indianapolis Colts at New York Giants
–Tennessee Titans at Washington Commanders
–Kansas City Chiefs at San Francisco 49ers
–Las Vegas Raiders at Los Angeles Rams
–Denver Broncos at Seattle Seahawks
–Los Angeles Chargers at Arizona Cardinals

Tradition preserved as Big Ten sets upcoming football opponents

The Big Ten revealed its revamped schedule of conference football opponents for the 2024-28 seasons, incorporating four new additions into schedules while maintaining traditional rivalries.

The conference is adding Southern California, UCLA, Washington and Oregon in 2024, giving the conference 18 teams all playing in one division. The top two teams will meet in the Big Ten title game at the end of the regular season.

The Big Ten is using what it calls the Flex Protect XVIII model, which keeps a combination of protected opponents and rotates in other opponents each year. Each university will play nine conference games and will face each opponent at least twice over the five-year time span.

The guaranteed annual protected matchups are Illinois-Northwestern, Illinois-Purdue, Indiana-Purdue, Iowa-Minnesota, Iowa-Nebraska, Iowa-Wisconsin, Maryland-Rutgers, Michigan-Michigan State, Michigan-Ohio State, Minnesota-Wisconsin, Oregon-Washington and UCLA-USC.

The conference previously made a run at the opponent schedule to account for the addition of USC and UCLA. But when Oregon and Washington left the Pacific-12 for the Big Ten earlier this summer, the conference had to start over.

The conference said annual travel by distance and time zones was a key consideration as was maintaining the “trophy” game traditions of the Big Ten.

“We added two more [teams], but that changes everything. We got to go back to the drawing board and do this rotation again,” Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti said on a conference call. “We’re staying with a lot of the principles that were in place when we did the original announcement back with USC and UCLA being integrated, the core concepts, competitive balance, connecting the whole conference. Trying to be mindful of travel, all those things are still in place here, protecting the traditional rivalries, all of those things are in this process.”

Dates of the 2024 games will be announced at a later date.

NFL finalizes 2022 opponents for every team

The NFL on Thursday confirmed the home and away matchups for the 2022 regular season for all 32 teams.

For the second season, teams will play a 17th game — an interconference matchup based on the final 2021 standings. Notable matchups created from this rule include the Tennessee Titans vs. the Green Bay Packers (the two No. 1 seeds in this year’s postseason) and the Kansas City Chiefs vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a rematch of Super Bowl LV.

The NFC teams will host the 17th game in 2022 after the AFC hosted in 2021, the first year the extra game was in play. This means that all NFC teams will have nine home games next season.

Specific game dates for the 2022 regular-season schedule will be revealed at a later time.
