Cincinnati star LB Ivan Pace Jr. declares for NFL draft

Cincinnati All-American linebacker Ivan Pace Jr. announced Saturday that he is entering the NFL draft.

Pace had 136 tackles this season while becoming the first unanimous first-team All-American in Bearcats’ history. He accumulated 21.5 tackles for loss, including 10 sacks, and was a finalist for the Bednarik Award, which goes to the nation’s best defensive player.

Pace, who was named American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year, played one season at Cincinnati after transferring from Miami. He played three seasons for the Florida school.

“I want to thank the coaches from the University of Cincinnati as well as Miami University for taking the time to coach and guide me to be a better player on the field, but also a better person off the field,” Pace wrote in his announcement on Twitter. “… With that being said, I will NOT be using my final year of eligibility and will declare for the 2023 NFL Draft.”

Bears clean house, fire GM, head coach Matt Nagy

General manager Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy were fired by the Chicago Bears on Monday.

The anticipated move is the latest reset for the franchise and comes at the conclusion of a 6-11 season that ended with a 31-17 loss at Minnesota on Sunday.

“I’ve never been in this position before,” Nagy said after the loss to the Vikings. “Whatever is supposed to happen will happen.”

Nagy guided Chicago to the playoffs twice in four seasons. He posted a 34-31 record but went 0-2 in the playoffs and was 1-7 against the Green Bay Packers.

Pace, hired in 2015, is likely to be remembered for his aggressive maneuvering with draft picks. He traded first-round picks to acquire pass rusher Khalil Mack, quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and quarterback Justin Fields. Pace previously worked in the personnel department for the Saints, another team that doesn’t mind parting with draft capital to acquire talent.

The next regime enters without a first-rounder, which goes to the New York Giants as part of the 2021 draft-day trade that helped the Bears move up for Fields.

Nagy came to Chicago after one season as offensive coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs. But he was not the offensive play-caller in Kansas City — head coach Andy Reid had that responsibility — and was relatively untested.

After going 12-4 and winning the North division in 2018, Nagy was 8-8 in 2019 and 2020.

Reports: Bears DC to retire, but head coach and GM to stay

The Chicago Bears reportedly are getting one off-field change but aren’t engaging in a major overhaul.

Defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano is retiring, but head coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace will remain in their jobs, multiple media outlets reported Tuesday night.

The Bears, who went 8-8 in the regular season, were eliminated from the playoffs with a 21-9 road loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Pagano, 60, headed the Chicago defense the past two seasons. The Bears ranked 11th in total defense in 2020 after placing eighth in that category in 2019. Chicago yielded 23.1 points per game this season, which ranked 14th in the NFL, after the club was fourth in 2019, when it yielded 18.6 points per game.

Pagano was the Indianapolis Colts’ head coach from 2012-17, compiling a 53-43 regular-season record and a 3-3 playoff mark. He led the Colts to the AFC Championship Game after the 2014 season.

He missed much of the 2012 season while undergoing treatment for leukemia.

Nagy and Pace came under scrutiny as the Bears slumped to the end of the 2020 season. Chicago started 5-1 but lost its next six games. A three-game winning streak followed, but the Bears were blown out by the Green Bay Packers in the regular-season finale and wound up sneaking into the postseason thanks to other results.

Nagy, 42, was selected as the NFL Coach of the Year after his first season on the job, when he led the 2018 Bears to a 12-4 mark. A pair of 8-8 seasons have followed. He has yet to win a playoff game in two appearances.

Pace, 43, took over the Bears front office in 2015. Chicago owns a 42-54 regular-season record and an 0-2 playoff mark during his tenure.

Matt Nagy awaits meeting with Bears’ brass

Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy could know his fate and employment status in the next 24 hours.

Nagy is running player exit interviews on Monday but a sitdown with management, which would include team ownership — chairman George McCaskey and president Ted Phillips — and general manager Ryan Pace, could take place as early as Tuesday.

The Bears finished the regular season 8-8 and were eliminated from the playoffs Sunday at New Orleans, 21-9.

“Like I told y’all at the beginning of the week, we’ve been so focused in on this game, and then the same thing goes with the staff. It’s probably not just our staff, it’s probably a lot of staffs; whether it’s promotions or demotions or whatever, there’s always change, that’s just how it goes,” Nagy said Sunday night. “So, that’s something that (Monday) for us, as a team, we’ll do all of our exit interviews and all of that stuff and talk to the guys, but that’ll be down the road. I’m just at a point right now where I could literally say I just appreciate the fight of these players and tomorrow we’ll discuss the other stuff.”

The Bears converted 1 of 10 attempts on third down in the defeat to the Saints. The loss followed the Week 17 defeat to the Packers that put the Bears in the playoffs by virtue of the newly created seventh spot in each conference.

With or without Nagy, the Bears are facing franchise-altering decisions. Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky is an unrestricted free agent after the team declined the option on his rookie contract.

“Yeah, I think I can definitely see myself back here next year,” Trubisky said after the game Sunday. “Obviously, a lot of that is out of my control but it feels like home and it feels like we have unfinished business. … But I can see that. We’ll see.”

Trubisky was benched in favor of Nick Foles after Week 3, but Foles was injured and never got his job back after Trubisky reclaimed it entering Week 12. Foles started seven games and the Bears averaged 16.7 points in those games.

Nagy just completed his third season in Chicago and is 28-20 in the regular season, 0-2 in the playoffs.

Chicago does have one of the best defenses in the NFL and despite a six-game losing streak found its way to the postseason for the second time in three years. Nagy went 12-4 and won the NFC North in his first season with the Bears.

Nagy also finished 8-8 in 2019 and the Bears missed the playoffs.
