Chiefs RB Isiah Pacheco (shoulder) out after surgery

Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco is out for a second consecutive game and recently underwent shoulder surgery.

Kansas City coach Andy Reid shared the intel on Friday ahead of the Chiefs’ trip to play the New England Patriots (3-10), clinging to a one-game lead in the AFC West.

Reid said Pacheco should be in a good spot to play next week for the Chiefs (8-5).

“He did the walkthrough with us. He should be back (next week),” Reid said.

Pacheco also missed Week 14 against Buffalo. He was third in the AFC and fifth in the NFL in rushing with 779 yards at the time of his injury at Green Bay. He also has 33 receptions for 209 yards and seven total touchdowns (six rushing, one receiving).

The Chiefs also ruled out left tackle Donovan Smith (neck) for the second game in a row.

Chiefs RB Isiah Pacheco still out with shoulder injury

Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco missed Thursday’s practice and could be sidelined for the Week 14 game with the Buffalo Bills because of a shoulder injury.

Pacheco and left tackle Donovan Smith (neck stinger) were not on the field Thursday, with Clyde Edwards-Helaire and rookie tackle Wanya Morris prepping to start against the Bills.

“We’ll see,” Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said Thursday. “Pop (Pacheco) has been phenomenal for us all year. The other guys in that room have done a really good job of starting to complete that room. It’s got to be a next-man-up mentality.”

Running back Jerick McKinnon has been dealing with a groin issue but was a full participant in practice Thursday.

Pacheco is third in the AFC and fifth in the NFL in rushing with 779 yards.

He had 18 carries for 110 yards at Green Bay last week, playing through the shoulder contusion suffered during the game.

Edwards-Helaire has 140 rushing yards this season. He was Kansas City’s top rusher against Buffalo last season with nine carries for 33 yards.

Chiefs RB Ronald Jones wants to be released

Running back Ronald Jones took to social media to apparently ask for his release from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Jones, 25, has been listed as inactive for every regular-season game with the Chiefs since signing a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the team in the offseason.

“Sure would like a RELEASE right about now,” Jones wrote Friday night on Twitter.

The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday.

Jones, 25, has spent the season behind fellow running backs Clyde Edwards-Helaire, rookie Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon on the Chiefs’ depth chart.

Selected by Tampa Bay in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Jones had 488 carries for 2,174 yards and 18 touchdowns in 55 career games with the Buccaneers. He also had 76 catches for 571 yards and a score.

Report: Chiefs to start rookie RB Isiah Pacheco

The Kansas City Chiefs are starting rookie Isiah Pacheco at running back over veteran Clyde Edwards-Helaire on Sunday, NFL Network reported.

Pacheco, a seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, took the first-team reps in practice this week over Edwards-Helaire, a first-round selection in 2020.

The Chiefs (4-2) visit the San Francisco 49ers (3-3) in Week 7.

Edwards-Helaire, 23, leads Kansas City with 256 yards on 59 carries with two touchdowns. He also has 16 catches for 137 yards and three scores in six starts.

Pacheco, 22, has rushed 31 times for 149 yards and one touchdown and has two receptions for 9 yards.

Pacheco is averaging 4.8 yards per carry, compared to 4.3 for Edwards-Helaire.

Edwards-Helaire has gained 2,139 yards from scrimmage and scored 16 touchdowns in 29 career games (all starts).
