Report: Patriots starting G Cole Strange to miss start of season

New England Patriots starting guard Cole Strange is expected to miss perhaps up to the middle of the 2024 season due to a significant knee injury he sustained in 2023, NFL Network reported.

Strange has started every game in which he’s played for the Patriots since they selected him with the 29th overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft.

New Patriots coach Jerod Mayo didn’t shed much light on Strange’s status when asked on Monday.

“Yeah, that is an interesting one,” Mayo said. “He is another guy, you would normally say day-by-day. He’s more of a, let’s say, week-by-week or you can go month-by-month if you want to. But he is working hard, you know, he is doing his rehab. He is here every day. He is in the meeting room, so I am happy where he is.”

Strange, 25, started all 17 games in his rookie season and 10 games in 2023.

New England Patriots wide receiver DeVante Parker (1) tries to avoid New York Giants cornerback Deonte Banks (25) at MetLife Stadium, Sunday, November 26, 2023.

WR DeVante Parker retires 2 months after signing with Eagles

Wide receiver DeVante Parker has retired after nine seasons in the NFL — and just two months after joining a new team.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed Parker to a one-year deal in March, but Parker told ESPN on Monday that he has other priorities in mind right now.

“I want to see my kids, spend quality time with them,” Parker said. “I want to be there for them whenever I can.”

Parker, 31, spent the past two seasons with the New England Patriots after playing seven for the Miami Dolphins, who drafted him 14th overall in 2015. Parker had 33 catches for 394 yards without a touchdown in 13 games last season.

Across 119 career games (88 starts) for Miami and New England, Parker hauled in 402 receptions for 5,660 yards and 27 touchdowns.

Parker was expected to be an option at WR3 for the Eagles behind stars A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Philadelphia also signed Parris Campbell and added two wide receivers in the draft.

NFL International Series: Jaguars play 2, No. 1 pick in London

Sao Paolo to London to Munich, the NFL International Series dots the world map with games in three countries featuring two appearances by the Jacksonville Jaguars and an England visit for No. 1 pick Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears.

The NFL released the international portion of its schedule Wednesday morning with the full 2024 schedule due out later in the day.

Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets play the Minnesota Vikings in Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on Oct. 6, a Week 5 matchup that marks Rodgers’ second career NFL game overseas.

One week later, the Jaguars and Bears are at the same location in Jacksonville’s 12th international game. The Bears chose Williams at the top of the 2024 draft to pilot the rebuilt offense with weapons aplenty, including new additions Keenan Allen (via trade from the Los Angeles Chargers) and No. 9 overall pick Rome Odunze at wide receiver.

Trevor Lawrence, the No. 1 pick in 2021, is 3-1 in international games. He’ll be packing for two weeks because the team extends its England visit through Week 6 to play the New England Patriots at Wembley Stadium on Oct. 20. It could be another duel with a rookie quarterback. The Patriots are under new management with Jerod Mayo at head coach and drafted quarterback Drake Maye third overall in April.

Germany is hot to the final international series game of the season on Nov. 10 pitting the Carolina Panthers and New York Giants.

A Friday night Week 1 affair in South America was confirmed by the league weeks earlier with the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles meeting in Corinthians Arena in Brazil on Sept. 6.

Pats coach Jerod Mayo says QB Drake Maye will ‘put the work in’

New England Patriots rookies – head coach Jerod Mayo and quarterback Drake Maye – spent a good deal of time together the past two days at the team’s rookie camp, with Mayo taking a level approach in his initial reviews.

“Early impressions of Drake?” Mayo said Saturday. “He has a lot to work on. But I have no doubt he’ll put the work in.”

Maye, the Patriots’ first-round pick (No. 3 overall) from North Carolina, has not yet been named the starter but that’s widely expected to come this summer.

Until then, Mayo will watch closely and continue to challenge the 21-year-old quarterback.

“He has a lot to work on. A lot to work on …,” Mayo continued. “He was here all night trying to get on the same page as everyone else.”

While “all night” might be a stretch, Mayo underscored the importance of spending quality time with his rookies.

“We’ll be here ‘til 7, 8, 9 o’clock,” he said. “Go in for a lift, then we have some meetings.

“The best thing about mini-camp is being around the guys for the first time. We’re at the hotel together. We’re right across the hallway from each other, so we’ll watch the film and look at the scripts for the next day together. We’ve got nothing else to do up here. Why not focus on football?”

Among Maye’s future targets, wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk spoke highly when asked for his evaluation of Maye.

“Guy can sling it,” said Polk, New England’s second-round selection. “Very confident and vocal. He’s a leader.

“He’s setting the tone in practice, trying to get guys moving around and operating at a high level. This is new to all of us. We’re still learning and trying to get to know each other so everybody can get on the same page.”

Much of Maye’s early work centered on fundamentals.

“I’m trying out two new stances that I’m getting used to,” he said. “Just getting more reps at it. Footwork is huge. It’s something that’s not easy.”

Along with Mayo, Maye will lean on Mayo as well as New England offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, offensive assistant coach Ben McAdoo and quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney.

“T.C. is talking to us during the meetings,” Maye said, “Coach Van Pelt will chime in when he needs to. (McAdoo) is awesome. All three of them know a lot of football.”

Report: Pats waive Nathan Rourke, down to four QBs

The New England Patriots are waiving Nathan Rourke and trimming the number of quarterbacks on their roster to four, ESPN reported Monday.

The Patriots drafted Drake Maye with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and also have veteran Jacoby Brissett, Bailey Zappe and 2024 sixth-round selection Joe Milton in the QB room.

A 25-year-old Canadian, Rourke was claimed by New England off waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars in December and re-signed with the Pats in March.

Rourke has not appeared in an NFL regular season game. He played in college at the University of Ohio (2017-19) and appeared in 23 games for the Canadian Football League’s BC Lions from 2021-22, throwing for 4,103 yards with 28 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

Report: K Joey Slye reaches deal with Patriots

Kicker Joey Slye agreed to terms on a contract with the New England Patriots, ESPN reported Thursday.

Slye, who was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Tuesday, is expected to provide competition for Chad Ryland in New England.

Ryland, 24, made just 64 percent of his field-goal attempts (16 of 25) during his rookie season for the Patriots. He was selected by the Patriots in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Slye didn’t spend long in Jacksonville, as he signed with the club on March 18.

Slye, 28, converted 19 of 24 field goals and 32 of 35 extra points in 17 games for the Washington Commanders last season.

He has made 82.3 percent of his field goals and just 88.5 percent of his PATs across five seasons with four teams.

Patriots sign DT Christian Barmore to $92M extension

The New England Patriots reached agreement with defensive tackle Christian Barmore on a four-year extension with a maximum value of $92 million.

Agent Nicole Lynn confirmed the figures Monday with ESPN, which also reported that the deal includes $41.8 million guaranteed for the 2021 second-round pick.

Barmore, 24, was entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2024 and was scheduled to earn a base salary of $1.82 million. The extension runs through the 2028 season.

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo said at the NFL league meetings in March that contract talks were active and likely to lead to a new deal following Barmore’s breakout season in 2023.

“Three years ago, Christian and I sat in the greenroom at the NFL Draft on night 1 and his names was not called,” Lynn posted Monday on X. “He would eventually slide to round 2, and that became one of the hardest nights of my career. Fast forward and now he is one of the highest paid DTs. God is always faithful!”

The 6-foot-5, 315-pound Barmore paced the Patriots with a career-high 8.5 sacks in 17 games (six starts) last season, also setting career highs in tackles (64), quarterback hits (16) and pass breakups (six).

Barmore has recorded 12.5 sacks, 32 QB hits and 133 tackles in 44 career games (11 starts).

Reports: Bills, Patriots bidding on 49ers WR Deebo Samuel

Trade offers for wide receiver Deebo Samuel could fetch the San Francisco 49ers a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, according to multiple reports.

The two teams at the center of the bidding prior to the start of the second round of the 2024 draft on Friday were AFC East rivals Buffalo and New England, NFL Network and The Athletic reported.

NFL Network reported the Patriots and 49ers engaged in conversations around Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk during the NFL Scouting Combine, but compensation was a sticking point.

The Bills traded No. 1 wide receiver Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans earlier this month and traded back twice on Thursday. Buffalo holds the No. 33 pick in the draft Friday.

49ers general manager John Lynch said on Wednesday that he “wouldn’t anticipate” a scenario in which the team would trade Aiyuk, who is looking for a long-term deal from San Francisco.

Whether Samuel could be available after Lynch used the 49ers’ first-round selection on Florida wide receiver Ricky Pearsall — a former Aiyuk teammate in 2019 before transferring to the Gators from Arizona State.

Lynch called Samuel “a part of this team, and a big part of this team” on Thursday night after the pick. Head coach Kyle Shanahan went further, saying trade talks took place when teams called but trading a wide receiver “doesn’t seem that likely to be honest. But I’m still on the table. If someone offered [owner] Jed [York] and John good stuff for me, I’m going to be out of here.”

Ex-NFL lineman Korey Cunningham found dead

Former NFL offensive lineman Korey Cunningham has died at age 28.

The New York Giants, one of three teams he played for in his NFL career, confirmed his death in a statement Friday.

“We are saddened to hear of the passing of Korey Cunningham,” the Giants said in a statement Friday morning. “He was a vital part of the spirit and camaraderie of the locker room. Our thoughts are with Korey’s family, friends and teammates.”

The team did not disclose a cause of death. ESPN reported he was found dead in his Clifton, N.J., home, and a police spokesperson told the network foul play was not suspected “at this time.”

Cunningham, who played collegiately at Cincinnati, was a seventh-round draft pick by the Arizona Cardinals in 2018 and was plagued by foot issues throughout his career. He appeared in 31 games with the Cardinals (2018), New England Patriots (2019-20) and Giants (2021-22). The Giants released him last summer.

Former teammate Justin Pugh recalled his time with Cunningham when they were both in Arizona, and shared on X, “Quick story: We would invite him to the OL dinner every week even though he wasn’t on the team which doesn’t happen…ever. Team dinners are for players on the team only. Except for Korey….solely because he was beloved by all the guys regardless if you knew him or not! He’d tell stories and we’d laugh our asses off all night.

Today is a sad day but I’ll always remember the good times and the laughs. Everyone who knew Korey Cunnigham was better for it. The world lost a great soul.”
