Raiders QB Geno Smith (shoulder) exits vs. Broncos

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Geno Smith exited Sunday’s 24-17 loss to the Denver Broncos with a right shoulder injury.

Smith was injured during the third quarter and later gave way to backup Kenny Pickett at the start of the fourth quarter.

Raiders coach Pete Carroll was concerned afterward but said initial tests “didn’t show any damage” to Smith’s passing shoulder.

“It’s just kind of jammed up right now,” Carroll said. “The early indications that they were able to get didn’t show any damage. His shoulder’s really locked up. So, we’ll see what that means.”

Carroll said he didn’t see Smith get injured.

“From what I understand, and I didn’t see the play happen, but he got banged on the shoulder pretty obviously,” Carroll said

Smith also sustained an injury to his right hand in the first half.

“From what I heard, he got his hand cut and it was bleeding a lot,” Carroll said. “And so, they just had to stop the bleeding. He got kicked or scraped or something like that. That’s what I heard, I didn’t see that. But his shoulder — he got hit pretty good.”

Smith completed 13 of 21 passes for 116 yards and one touchdown before exiting. Pickett finished 8-of-11 passing for 97 yards and a touchdown.

Smith, 35, has passed for 2,648 yards and 16 touchdowns and is tied for the NFL lead with 14 interceptions. He is in his first season with the Raiders after being acquired from the Seattle Seahawks in the offseason.

Pickett, a former starter for the Pittsburgh Steelers, also is in his first season with Las Vegas. He was acquired from the Cleveland Browns in late August.

The Raiders (2-11) have lost seven straight games heading into the Dec. 14 game at the Philadelphia Eagles.

Shedeur Sanders hurt, Dillon Gabriel to start vs. Eagles if healthy

Cleveland plans to start another rookie quarterback when the Browns visit the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday afternoon.

If third-round pick Dillon Gabriel’s hamstring holds up through joint practices with the Eagles this week, he’ll take his turn as Cleveland’s QB1 following a strong debut from fifth-round quarterback Shedeur Sanders last week.

“The plan was always to give both of those guys starts in the preseason, so we’ll see how it shakes out,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said on Wednesday, adding Gabriel had to clear hurdles with a sore hamstring the next two days if he wants to take the field first this weekend.

Stefanski made the comments before the team practiced on Wednesday, and prior to what could be an obstacle to Sanders building on his first outing and claiming a significant role.

Sanders halted participation in throwing drills and appeared to be injured in Wednesday’s joint practice with the Eagles, further complicating matters for Stefanski.

Kenny Pickett, acquired from the Eagles in an offseason trade, is not available for 11-on-11 work because of a hamstring injury.

There’s only one quarterback on the roster who hasn’t been sent to the training tent this summer.

Cleveland hasn’t committed to playing Joe Flacco, the purported No. 1 QB on the depth chart, in preseason games to preserve the 40-year-old’s health.

Gabriel was selected 94th overall in the 2025 draft after putting up big numbers at three college stops: UCF, Oklahoma and Oregon. Still on the board 50 picks later, the Browns chose Sanders to end a well-publicized draft weekend crash from projections of a top-50 draft rating.

Gabriel said he won’t put too much in the opportunity if he starts against the reigning Super Bowl champions.

“I try to just stay in the moment. I’ll look forward to that moment once it comes and be right where my feet are,” Gabriel said. “The best competitors know how to stay present and be themselves by competing at a high level one play at a time.”

Sanders received high marks from Stefanski after the Browns’ coaching staff reviewed the film of his two-TD showing in last Friday’s win over the Carolina Panthers.

“Certainly, for a quarterback, that next step is getting in the game settings and taking the practice field to the game. And I thought that’s what we saw by and large from Shedeur (Sanders),” Stefanski said. “That’s what we saw by and large from our offense was really taking those things that we’re homing in on, on the practice field and then showing them in the games, and it goes back to the previous point where we want to vary our offense.”

Browns: Shedeur Sanders to play, might start, this week at Eagles

Kevin Stefanski is holding off on naming a starter for the Browns’ preseason game with the Philadelphia Eagles this week while rookie Dillon Gabriel and veteran Kenny Pickett inch closer to rejoining the competition to be Cleveland’s QB1.

Fifth-round pick Shedeur Sanders generated significant buzz with a two-TD performance in the preseason opener.

Gabriel, a third-round pick out of Oregon, and former first-round pick Pickett are limited by hamstring injuries. Gabriel was able to participate in some 11-on-11 drills on Monday, Stefanski said, but Pickett is a bit behind health-wise.

Sanders completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards against the Carolina Panthers in a 30-10 win Friday and is in the mix to start this week at Philadelphia.

“I’m not there yet,” Stefanski said Monday of when he’s planning to make the call on this week’s starter.

The Browns did commit to getting Sanders reps in this week’s game, but he could play in the second half depending on which players are available.

As for who will enter the 2025 season as Cleveland’s QB1, Stefanski said he plans to make the determination before the third preseason game on Aug. 23 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Veteran Joe Flacco is considered the most likely starter for the Browns when the regular season begins Sept. 7. Cleveland opens the 2025 season against the visiting Cincinnati Bengals.

Flacco did not play in the preseason opener.

Reports: Shedeur Sanders to start Browns’ preseason opener

The Cleveland Browns plan to give Shedeur Sanders the start at quarterback in their preseason opener Friday at the Carolina Panthers, Cleveland.com and ESPN reported Tuesday.

The news comes just one day after Cleveland listed Sanders as its QB4 on the unofficial depth chart for the week and reportedly signed free agent QB Tyler Huntley.

However, Kenny Pickett and Sanders’ fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel are both dealing with hamstring injuries, and the team’s other quarterback, 40-year-old Joe Flacco, does not have much to prove in a preseason setting.

It’s unclear how severe Pickett’s and Gabriel’s injuries are. Sanders and Huntley may split the workload at Carolina if the Browns do not plan to play their other quarterbacks.

Sanders, 23, was widely expected to be a first-round draft pick and one of the first quarterbacks selected last April. Instead, he dropped to the fifth round, where the Browns drafted him 144th overall — two rounds after they drafted Gabriel from Oregon.

After a prolific college career playing for his father Deion Sanders at Jackson State and Colorado, Shedeur Sanders is battling for a roster spot. As of Monday, Sanders was the only QB yet to be given first-team reps.

Browns QB Shedeur Sanders held out of practice with arm soreness

Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders did not take part in team drills on Saturday because of arm soreness, the team said.

In addition, a shoulder ailment kept cornerback Greg Newsome II out of practice, and he is considered day to day, coach Kevin Stefanski said.

Defensive end Myles Garrett also sat out Saturday for what Stefanski called precautionary reasons, and quarterback Kenny Pickett, who injured a hamstring earlier this week, took part only in individual drills.

With the absence of Sanders and Pickett from team drills, veteran quarterback Joe Flacco and rookie Dillon Gabriel shared the reps.

ESPN Cleveland reported Flacco was 11-of-18 passing and Gabriel 11-of-22, with each throwing a touchdown at practice.

On Friday, Flacco was 9-of-13 with two scores and Sanders went 7-of-10 with a touchdownl, per ESPN Cleveland.

Gabriel struggled, finishing the Friday session 3-for-14 passing with an interception.

The Browns open the preseason on Aug. 8 at the Carolina Panthers and the regular season on Sept. 7 with a home game against division rival Cincinnati.

Browns QB Kenny Pickett dealing with hamstring issue

Kenny Pickett, one of four players in Cleveland’s quarterback competition, might miss time with a hamstring issue, NFL Network reported Monday.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski has been rotating Pickett and veteran Joe Flacco with the first-team offense early in training camp.

Rookie third-round pick Dillon Gabriel is also in the picture and has been taking the majority of the second-team reps ahead of fifth-rounder Shedeur Sanders. Incumbent starter Deshaun Watson is idle while recovering from a series of Achilles surgeries over the past nine months.

Pickett, 27, was acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles in a trade during the offseason and Flacco, 40, who signed as a free agent and led the Browns to the playoffs in 2023, is back in Cleveland after playing for the Indianapolis Colts last season.

Pickett lost his starting job with the Pittsburgh Steelers late in the 2023 season. The team moved on from Pickett before the 2024 campaign, trading him to the Eagles to be a backup to Jalen Hurts.

Pickett is 15-10 as a starter and has completed 62.4 percent of his passes for 4,765 yards with 15 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 30 games.

Kenny Pickett takes first-team reps, Browns GM open to keeping 4 QBs

Quarterback Kenny Pickett operated the first-team offense in the Browns’ controlled team scrimmage and 11-on-11 work as training camp started this week.

Joe Flacco did not take snaps in the full team work with rookie Dillon Gabriel lined up at quarterback with the second team and Shedeur Sanders sliding in behind him for third-team reps. Deshaun Watson began training camp on the physically unable to perform list and is not participating in on-field work.

That only mildly narrows the options for Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski, who said he’ll take all 46 days from the start of training camp to the Sept. 7 regular-season opener to make his call on the QB1 if necessary.

“I have a plan that’s in pencil, and we have to take in information every single day, take in how guys are handling certain situations, and then adjust from there. But we’ll get to those types of decisions later on,” Stefanski said. “I think the big thing for me is putting our guys in a position where we can evaluate them. I think they did a great job in the spring. All four of those guys, I will continue to put them in some situations, but ultimately, we’d love to make decisions sooner than later.”

Flacco, in his 18th NFL season, knows Stefanski’s offense from his 2023 run with the Browns. And he knows how to pace himself as a professional through the dog days of camp.

For that reason, he’ll be in a rotation for reps, which gives the Browns more exposure to the three contenders for playing time who are largely new to the franchise. All three were acquired in the offseason. Pickett, landed by Cleveland in a trade with the Eagles, is a relatively known commodity from his time with the division-rival Pittsburgh Steelers. Gabriel, drafted in the third round after a stellar 13-1 season at Oregon in 2024, and former Colorado star Sanders (fifth-round pick) are getting up to speed as quickly as possible.

The charge to get the QB position fixed comes straight from the top. Franchise owner Jimmy Haslam was blunt and direct in assessing the Browns “thought we had the quarterback, we didn’t” in retrospect reviewing the Watson deal with the Houston Texans. Watson is recovering from a season-ending Achilles that he reinjured in January and might not play in 2025.

Re-enter Flacco, who signed after spending last season with the Indianapolis Colts and is expected to be the starter in Week 1.

Now in his second tour with the franchise, he said he understands the long view of the position will tell a different story for the Browns, but he is spending July and August dialed in only on what he can control.

“You know, it’s tough to have expectations,” Flacco said. “I think there’s been some communication between probably all the quarterbacks and Kevin. So, yeah, I guess I know a little bit what to expect, at least for the next week. But you can’t ask me. It’s hard for me to tell what it’s going to look like, you know, two, three weeks from now.”

Depending on the final makeup of the 53-man roster at the end of preseason, Browns general manager Andrew Berry said he wouldn’t rule out carrying all four quarterbacks rather than making a trade or hoping they go unclaimed on the practice squad.

He said if you consider the motive for assigning players to the final handful of roster spots, with the focus on development, why couldn’t those players be quarterbacks?

“I also think with the roster flexibility nowadays, especially with the elevations that you’re able to have on the practice squad, there’s just more flexibility in terms of how to build your 48-man game-day roster where it’s maybe not as quite as restrictive as in the past,” Berry said. “If there are four that are 53-man worthy and we think it makes the most sense for us to keep, then we will.”

Eagles QB Jalen Hurts remains in concussion protocol from Dec. 22 hit

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is not yet cleared from concussion protocol and his status for the NFC wild-card playoff matchup with the Green Bay Packers could be up in the air until later this week.

Head coach Nick Sirianni said the Eagles had “no new information” Monday on Hurts, who has been out since suffering the head injury Dec. 22 against the Washington Commanders.

Because the Eagles had no scheduled practice Monday or Tuesday, the next update on Hurts’ status would come Wednesday with the first practice and injury report of the postseason.

Hurts was a nonparticipant on the injury and practice report last week, but likely would’ve been held out for the regular-season finale even if healthy. Running back Saquon Barkley, wide receivers A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith and offensive linemen Landon Dickerson, Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata were all inactive last week.

Hurts completed 20 of 34 passes for 278 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in the Eagles’ Week 1 win over the Packers in Brazil.

Sirianni would not confirm whether Hurts was at the team facility or able to participate in meetings or film study during the team media session on Monday.

Tanner McKee started the Week 18 win over the New York Giants. Sirianni wouldn’t declare his depth chart at the position or give into questions about whether McKee might’ve moved ahead of Kenny Pickett as the QB2 in Philadelphia.

“We have a lot of confidence in both guys,” he said.

McKee completed 27 of 41 passes for 269 yards with two touchdowns and zero turnovers against the Giants.

Eagles QB Jalen Hurts remains in concussion protocol

The Philadelphia Eagles are preparing to start Kenny Pickett at quarterback on Sunday against the visiting Dallas Cowboys.

Head coach Nick Sirianni confirmed Friday morning that Jalen Hurts remains in the concussion protocol, adding, “It’s going to be tough for him to make it this week.”

Hurts and Pickett (ribs) were both injured during last weekend’s 36-33 loss to the Washington Commanders, but Pickett was a full participant in Thursday’s practice.

Pickett, who grew up as an Eagles fan in Ocean Township, N.J., will have a chance to help Philadelphia (12-3) clinch the NFC East title in his first start for the franchise.

“I’m very excited. It’s a big opportunity,” he told reporters Thursday. “I’ve been working hard to stay ready and I felt like I was in a good position last game with my preparation and now having a week to practice, I’ll feel even better going into the stadium. So, I’m excited. I just want to get the win.”

Pickett relieved Hurts in the first quarter against Washington and completed 14 of 24 passes for 143 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Prior to that, he had appeared in three games in mop-up duty.

Pickett, 26, compiled a 14-10 record as the starter for the Steelers from 2022-23 after being drafted by Pittsburgh in the first round (20th overall) in 2022.

After the Steelers acquired Russell Wilson in March, Pickett was traded along with a 2024 fourth-round pick to the Eagles in exchange for a 2024 third-round pick and two 2025 seventh-rounders.

Pickett has completed 62.3 percent of his pass attempts for 4,622 yards with 14 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 29 career games. He has rushed for 303 yards and four scores.

Hurts, 26, has completed 68.7 percent of his passes for 2,903 yards with 18 TDs and five picks in 15 starts in 2024. He has rushed for 630 yards and is tied for the NFL lead with 14 rushing touchdowns.

Eagles bring in QB Ian Book for visit with Jalen Hurts (concussion) ailing

With the quarterback position suddenly an uncertainty, the Philadelphia Eagles brought QB Ian Book in for a visit on Christmas Day.

Book, 26, has some familiarity with the organization. He was waived by the Eagles in August 2023 as they finalized their 53-man roster.

Starter Jalen Hurts is in the concussion protocol, and backup Kenny Pickett suffered an injury to his ribs last Sunday in a loss to the Washington Commanders.

Second-year player Tanner McKee is the team’s third quarterback.

Book was selected in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Saints. The former Notre Dame star has played in just one NFL game, starting for New Orleans on Dec. 27, 2021, in a 20-3 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

He also has spent time with the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs.

The Eagles (12-3) are headed to the NFL playoffs and will host the Dallas Cowboys (7-8) on Sunday.
