Eagles release veteran TE C.J. Uzomah

The Philadelphia Eagles released veteran tight end C.J. Uzomah on Wednesday.

Uzomah, 31, spent the past two seasons with the New York Jets after seven years with the Cincinnati Bengals.

He caught eight passes for 58 yards and a touchdown in 12 games (eight starts) in 2023 for the Jets, who released him in March to clear $5.3 million of salary cap space, per Spotrac.

He signed a one-year, $1.37 million contract with the Eagles on April 11, with $795,000 guaranteed.

Uzomah has 192 receptions for 1,881 yards and 16 TDs in 106 games (82 starts) since the Bengals drafted him in the fifth round in 2015.

Philadelphia has tight ends Dallas Goedert, Grant Calcaterra and Albert Okwuegbunam Jr. on the roster.

The Eagles signed offensive lineman Jason Poe in a corresponding move. Poe, 26, was undrafted in 2022 and has not appeared in a regular season game. He spent time on the practice squads of the San Francisco 49ers and New York Jets the past two seasons.

Nevermore: Injured Ravens mascot Poe out for season

The Baltimore Ravens’ mascot Poe will miss the 2022 NFL season with a drumstick injury.

Tongue firmly in cheek, Ravens coach John Harbaugh made the announcement in a video posted to Twitter on Thursday.

“Poe is going to be put on injured reserve for the rest of the season. He’s going to be done,” Harbaugh said. “Unfortunately he sustained a serious injury to his drumstick and he will not be able to perform for the rest of the season.”

Poe was injured during Baltimore’s preseason finale Saturday night against the Washington Commanders.

During a youth football game played at halftime, the mascot was hit from behind by one of the players. He had to be carted off the field with his left leg immobilized.

Instead of saying “nevermore,” Harbaugh said the search is on for a new mascot with the start of the season just 10 days away.

“We will find a replacement,” Harbaugh said. “We’re going to go to work on that right away. We’re going to turn over every stone, scour everywhere and find his replacement. We’re going to get right into evaluating our options and see where we go next and see if we can find somebody to replace Poe.”

Cowboys shake up shoddy D, release Poe, Worley

The Dallas Cowboys continued to shake up their lackluster defense Wednesday, releasing defensive tackle Dontari Poe and defensive back Daryl Worley a day after they traded defensive end Everson Griffen to Detroit for a conditional draft pick in 2021.

The Cowboys had also been looking into dealing Poe and Worley but were unable to find trade partners for either player, according to multiple reports.

Dallas owner Jerry Jones contended Poe’s release was because of his weight and disappointing production and not due to his being the only Cowboy to kneel for the national anthem before games.

“When you’re 30 pounds overweight and you’re not doing anything about what’s keeping you from performing well on the field, there is no reason to get into the other stuff,” Jones told ESPN. “We have a platform here, but the platform on the football field has a high standard, and he was not up to the standard.

“He needed to correct that, and he did not. I’m going to leave it at that.”

The 30-year-old Poe signed a two-year, $8.5 million contract in March but he has just seven tackles and no sacks despite playing 266 snaps, the most of any Cowboys interior lineman this season.

Worley, 25, hasn’t been that much better, totaling 14 tackles in seven games (four starts) this season for a Cowboys defense that ranks dead last in the league in points (34.7) and rushing yards (178.3) allowed per game.

A two-time Pro Bowl selection, Poe has 285 tackles and 20.5 sacks in 128 career games (125 starts) with the Kansas City Chiefs, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers and Cowboys.

Worley has 257 tackles, five interceptions and two sacks in 63 career games (53 starts) with the Panthers, then-Oakland Raiders and Cowboys.
