Interim coach Biff Poggi won’t be back at Michigan

Michigan interim coach Biff Poggi said after the team’s Citrus Bowl loss to Texas on Wednesday that he will not be back with the Wolverines.

Poggi was been running the program since the firing of Sherrone Moore on Dec. 10. Moore was ousted for allegedly having an improper relationship with a football staffer.

Poggi, 66, confirmed he was a candidate to get the full-time gig during the search process, but days later Michigan hired long-time Utah head man Kyle Whittingham.

The Wolverines lost 41-27 to the Longhorns to end a 9-4 season.

Poggi is highly optimistic over the possibilities for Michigan’s 2026 team.

“This isn’t a rebuild at all,” Poggi said. “That would shortchange the kids, and Coach Whittingham is going to do an amazing job.”

During the television broadcast, Whittingham said his coaching staff is nearly filled up for next season.

“We’re just about finished,” Whittingham said. “It hasn’t been announced officially yet. Until somebody’s on the dotted line, you never want to get ahead of yourself, but I think we’re in good shape. I think we’ll have probably about 90% of the staff named this weekend. Then we’ll finish off the next one or two over the course of next week.”

Poggi served as interim coach for three games this season. He also guided Michigan to a 63-3 win over Central Michigan and a 30-27 victory at Nebraska in September while Moore was serving a two-game suspension for his role in the 2023 sign-stealing scandal.

Poggi just completed his third stint with the Wolverines. He returned to Ann Arbor for this season after being fired as Charlotte’s coach after a two-year run.

Poggi was an analyst on the 2016 Michigan staff and was associate head coach in 2021-22 when Jim Harbaugh was the Wolverines’ head coach.

Michigan tabs Biff Poggi as interim coach during Sherrone Moore’s suspension

Michigan has named Biff Poggi as the interim head coach during Sherrone Moore’s upcoming two-game suspension.

The Wolverines’ associate head coach will run the show on Saturday at home against Central Michigan and on Sept. 20 at Nebraska as well as the period between those two games, Moore announced on Monday.

Poggi, 66, was the head coach at Charlotte from 2023-24 (6-16 record) before being fired last November with two games left on the schedule.

Poggi previously was on the Michigan staff as an analyst in 2016 and as associate head coach under Jim Harbaugh from 2021-22.

Moore’s ban was part of the NCAA infractions handed down last month in the wake of a sign-stealing scandal that took place during the 2023 national championship season, when he was Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator.

Moore, whose suspension officially begins Saturday, will return to the sidelines for an Oct. 4 date with Wisconsin in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Moore has also been suspended for the 2026 season opener, although Michigan has appealed that punishment.

Michigan (1-1) fell eight spots to No. 23 in the AP poll Monday after a 24-13 loss at then-No. 18 Oklahoma last Saturday following a season-opening win against New Mexico.

Charlotte, with 3-7 record, fires football coach Biff Poggi

The Charlotte football program, after taking a fourth consecutive loss on Saturday, fired coach Biff Poggi on Monday.

Associate head coach Tim Brewster was appointed the interim head coach of the 49ers, who have a 3-7 overall record, 2-4 in the American Athletic Conference.

Poggi, 64, produced a 6-16 mark in his two seasons in charge at Charlotte.

Athletic director Mike Hill said in a statement, “I am thankful to Biff Poggi for his leadership and mentorship of our student-athletes over these past two seasons. No one can question Biff’s passion for helping young people succeed in life, both personally and professionally, but our on-field results have unfortunately fallen short of everyone’s expectations.

“As we move forward into the next chapter of Charlotte 49er Football, we will be looking for a leader to take our program to the next level as a consistent bowl and championship contender.”

Charlotte owned a 3-3 record before taking successive losses to Navy, Memphis, Tulane and South Florida, yielding at least 33 points in each contest and losing by 30-plus points three times in that span. A 59-24 home defeat to the Bulls spelled the end for Poggi.

Before taking over in Charlotte ahead of the 2023 season, Poggi spent two years as Michigan’s associate head coach under Jim Harbaugh.

The 49ers rank 125th out of 133 FCS teams in scoring defense, allowing 36.7 points per game. They sit 116th in total defense, surrendering 430.3 yards per contest.

Brewster, 64, was the head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2007-10, compiling a 15-30 record. He has served on college coaches staffs at North Carolina, Texas, Mississippi State, Florida State, Texas A&M, Florida, Jackson State and Colorado, and he has been an NFL assistant coach for the then-San Diego Chargers and the Denver Broncos.

Charlotte closes the season with a road game against Florida Atlantic on Saturday, then a home game against UAB on Nov. 30.
