Georgia a nearly unanimous No. 1 in AP Top 25

Georgia was the No. 1 team in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll of the regular season released Sunday.

The Bulldogs (13-0) received 62 of the 63 first-place votes and lead the poll for the ninth straight week and 12th time this season.

No. 2 Michigan (13-0) received the other first-place vote, with TCU (12-1), Ohio State (12-1) and Alabama (10-2) rounding out the top five.

Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State and TCU were also the top four teams in the final College Football Playoff rankings released Sunday.

The Bulldogs and Buckeyes will meet in the Dec. 31 Peach Bowl at Atlanta, while the Wolverines and Horned Frogs will play the same day in the Fiesta Bowl at Glendale, Ariz.

Tennessee (10-2), Pac-12 champion Utah (10-3), Southern California (11-2), Penn State (10-2) and ACC champion Clemson (11-2) make up the rest of the AP top 10.

Big 12 champion Kansas State (10-3) moved up two spots to No. 11.

Tulane (11-2) climbed to No. 14, a season high, after winning the American Athletic Conference.

Sun Belt champion Troy (11-2) made its debut in the poll at No. 23.

Michigan up to No. 2 behind Georgia in AP Top 25

Michigan rose to No. 2 and Southern California cracked the top four in Sunday’s Associated Press Top 25 poll after big rivalry wins.

Georgia held on to the No. 1 spot for the eighth straight week and the 11th time this season, earning 58 of the 63 first-place votes.

The Wolverines got the other five votes following a 45-23 win Saturday at Ohio State, with the Buckeyes slipping three spots to No. 5.

No. 3 TCU and No. 4 USC both moved up one slot, staking out their spots ahead of the College Football Playoff rankings to be released on Tuesday.

The Horned Frogs hammered Iowa State 62-14, while the Trojans earned a 38-27 triumph over Notre Dame.

Following Ohio State, the rest of the Top 10 features Alabama, Tennessee, Penn State, Washington and Clemson.

LSU and Oregon each fell five places to Nos. 11 and 15, respectively. The Fighting Irish and North Carolina tumbled six spots each to Nos. 19 and 24, respectively.

No. 23 UTSA joined the Top 25 for the first time this season and No. 20 South Carolina and No. 25 Mississippi State both rejoined the poll.

Ole Miss, Cincinnati and Coastal Carolina dropped out of the rankings.

USC lands in Top 5 of AP poll; Georgia, Ohio State still 1-2

Welcome back to the club, Southern California.

The Trojans reached No. 5 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll, released Sunday, marking their first appearance in the Top 5 since hitting No. 4 in September 2017. They jumped two spots after an epic 48-45 victory over crosstown rival UCLA on Saturday night.

The top four remained unchanged, with Georgia receiving 62 of 63 first-place votes to stay atop the poll. No. 2 Ohio State earned the other first-place vote and was followed by Michigan and TCU. All four programs are 11-0, but Michigan and TCU both needed last-minute field goals to stay undefeated.

Following USC were LSU, Clemson, Alabama, Tennessee and Oregon to round out the Top 10.

Tennessee dropped four spots after Saturday’s stunning 63-38 loss to South Carolina, in which the Gamecocks scored the most points by an unranked team against a Top 5 team in the history of the poll, according to the Associated Press.

The Volunteers weren’t alone with their precipitous fall.

With losses Saturday, UCF plunged eight spots to No. 25. Ole Miss slipped six spots to No. 20 and North Carolina fell five places to 18.

The week’s big climbers were Notre Dame, up five slots to No. 13, as well as two teams that rose four spots — Kansas State (No. 15) and Florida State (No. 16).

Out of the poll this week was Oklahoma State, replaced by Big 12 rival Texas at No. 24.

Georgia No. 1 in AP Top 25 for ninth week; top 5 unchanged

The top five teams in the Associated Press Top 25 poll remained unchanged from last week, with Georgia still a dominant No. 1 choice.

The Bulldogs received 62 of 63 votes in the latest poll released Sunday, with No. 2 Ohio State garnering the only other first-place vote. Defending champion Georgia sits atop the poll for the ninth time this season.

The four top teams — No. 3 Michigan and No. 4 TCU — all moved to 10-0 with victories on Saturday. No. 5 Tennessee is 9-1, its only loss to Georgia.

Rounding out the Top 10 are LSU, Southern California, Alabama, Clemson and Utah.

TCU squeaked out a 17-10 win at Texas, while Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and Tennessee won their conference games by a combined margin of 201-60.

Pac-12 programs Oregon and UCLA, both in the Top 10 last week, plummeted following losses on Saturday. The Ducks fell six spots to No. 12 and the Bruins dropped seven places to No. 16 following upsets.

Washington, ranked No. 24 last week, climbed nine spots after its 37-34 defeat of Oregon.

Moving back into the Top 25 were No. 22 Cincinnati, No. 24 Oklahoma State and No. 25 Oregon State. Making its season debut on the list is No. 23 Coastal Carolina (9-1) following its 26-23 win over Southern Miss.

Dropping out of the poll were NC State, Texas, Liberty and Illinois.

The updated College Football Playoff rankings will be unveiled Tuesday night. Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and TCU were the top four in last week’s rankings.

Tennessee cracks top 10, Florida State returns to poll

Tennessee and North Carolina State cracked the top 10 and Florida State returned to the Associated Press Top 25 college football poll for the first time since 2018.

The top five was unchanged Sunday as No. 1 Georgia (4-0) received 55 of 63 first-place votes. No. 2 Alabama (4-0) and No. 3 Ohio State (4-0) each received four votes and were followed by Michigan (4-0) and Clemson (4-0).

No. 6 Southern California (4-0) and No. 7 Kentucky (4-0) each climbed a spot, while No. 8 Tennessee (4-0) moved up three places after a 38-33 win against Florida. The Gators (2-2) dropped from 20th to out of the poll.

No. 9 Oklahoma State (3-0) held steady and No. 10 NC State (4-0) rose two places after a 41-10 rout of UConn.

It is the highest ranking for the Volunteers since 2006 and the highest for the Wolfpack since 2002.

No. 17 Texas A&M (3-1) made the biggest climb of the week, jumping six spots after a 23-21 defeat of Arkansas (3-1). The Razorbacks slid 10 spots to No. 20.

No. 18 Oklahoma (3-1) plummeted 12 places following a 41-34 loss to Kansas State (3-1), who entered the poll this week at No. 25.

No. 21 Minnesota (4-0) also joined the rankings after a 34-7 victory against Michigan State.

Texas (2-2) and Miami (2-2) both fell out of the poll following losses to Texas Tech and Middle Tennessee State, respectively.

Dominant Georgia strengthens grip on No. 1 ranking

After another dominant performance, Georgia strengthened its grip on the No. 1 spot in the Associated Press Top 25 college football poll released Sunday.

The defending national champion Bulldogs improved to 3-0 with Saturday’s 48-7 victory in their Southeastern Conference opener at South Carolina. The Bulldogs have outscored their opponents by a 130-10 margin this season.

Georgia received 59 of the 63 first-place votes, with No. 2 Alabama (3-0) and No. 3 Ohio State (3-0) receiving three votes and one vote, respectively.

The top 10 was unchanged with the exception of No. 8 Kentucky (3-0) switching places with No. 9 Oklahoma State (3-0).

No. 4 Michigan, No. 5 Clemson, No. 6 Oklahoma, No. 7 Southern California and No. 10 Arkansas all improved to 3-0 over the weekend.

No. 11 Tennessee (3-0) and No. 12 NC State (3-0) both moved up four spots.

This week’s biggest risers were No. 14 Penn State (3-0) and No. 15 Oregon (2-1). The Nittany Lions climbed eight spots after a 41-12 win at Auburn and the Ducks jumped 10 places after a 41-20 defeat of BYU.

The Cougars (2-1) tumbled seven spots to No. 19, while Miami (2-1) plummeted 12 spots to No. 25 after a 17-9 loss to No. 23 Texas A&M (2-1).

Washington (3-0) entered the poll at No. 18 after a 39-28 defeat of Michigan State. The Spartans (2-1) dropped from No. 11 to “others receiving votes” with the loss.

Top 25: Georgia reclaims No. 1 spot after Alabama’s close call

Defending national champion Georgia moved into the No. 1 spot in the Associated Press Top 25 poll on Sunday, with Alabama sliding to No. 2 after it struggled to beat previously unranked Texas on Saturday.

While Alabama needed a field goal in the final seconds to beat Texas 20-19, Georgia cruised past Samford in a 33-0 victory. The Bulldogs captured 53 of 63 first-place votes, with the Crimson Tide earning nine.

The final first-place vote went to Ohio State, which defeated Arkansas State 45-12 to remain No. 3 in the poll.

The rest of the top 5 was unchanged, with Michigan at No. 4 and Clemson at No. 5.

No. 6 Oklahoma State was followed by Southern California, Oklahoma State, Kentucky and Arkansas.

The biggest movers on the week came from the Southeastern Conference.

Arkansas rose into the top 10, moving from No. 16 on the strength of its 44-30 win over South Carolina. Kentucky moved 11 spots to No. 9 following its 26-16 road win at Florida. The Gators dropped six places to No. 18.

Tennessee moved up nine spots to 15 with its win over Pittsburgh, which fell six places to No. 23.

Another SEC team, Texas A&M, plummeted from No. 6 to 24 after its 17-14 home loss to Appalachian State.

Notre Dame, which opened the season at No. 5, fell out of the Top 25 after being shocked by Marshall on its home field. The Irish came into the week ranked No. 8 after their season-opening loss at Ohio State.

Also dropping out of the poll were previous No. 19 Wisconsin and No. 25 Houston, both losers to unranked opponents.

Moving into the top 25 were Texas (No. 21), Penn State (No. 22) and Oregon (No. 25).

Champion Georgia unanimous No. 1 in final AP Top 25 poll

Georgia capped its College Football Playoff national championship as a unanimous No. 1 in the final Associated Press Top 25 balloting of the season, released Tuesday.

It was the Bulldogs’ first season-ending No. 1 spot in the poll since 1980, when they were 12-0 and national champions. The 2021 Bulldogs finished 14-1, and it was their third top-5 finish in five years under head coach Kirby Smart.

Alabama, beaten 33-18 by Georgia on Monday night in Indianapolis, finished No. 2.

The two other CFP semifinalists — Michigan and Cincinnati — ended up Nos. 3 and 4, respectively. Georgia defeated Michigan in the Orange Bowl 34-11, and Cincinnati lost to Alabama in the Cotton Bowl, 27-6.

Rounding out the Top 5 was Baylor, which beat Ole Miss 21-6 in the Sugar Bowl. It was the first Top 5 finish for both Baylor and Cincinnati.

Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Notre Dame, Michigan State and Oklahoma made up the rest of the Top 10.

In all, the Southeastern Conference had five teams, followed by the Big Ten and Atlantic Coast Conference with four each. The Big 12 had three teams, the Pacific-12, Mountain West and American Athletic conference each had two, and two independents made the Top 25. The Sun Belt was represented by one team.

Alabama reclaims No. 1 spot in AP poll; Georgia falls to No. 3

Alabama reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the Associated Press Top 25 poll on Sunday, the same day the College Football Playoff committee made the Crimson Tide the No. 1 playoff seed.

The AP voters and CFP committee agreed on the top five: Alabama (12-1), followed by Michigan (12-1), Georgia (12-1), Cincinnati (13-0) and Notre Dame (11-1).

The Crimson Tide received 50 of 62 first-place votes after beating previous No. 1 Georgia 41-24 on Saturday in the Southeastern Conference championship game. Michigan received nine votes and Cincinnati garnered three.

At No. 6 was Baylor (11-2), which climbed three spots after beating then-No. 5 Oklahoma State in the Big 12 title game on Saturday. Ohio State (10-2) and Ole Miss (10-2) remained Nos. 7 and 8 respectively, Oklahoma State (11-2) fell to No. 9 and newly crowned Pac-12 champion Utah (10-3) rounded out the Top 10.

Oregon (10-13), which lost the Pac-12 championship game to the Utes on Friday, fell out the of Top 10 to No. 15. Iowa (10-3), dominated by Michigan 42-3 in the Big Ten title game, fell two spots to No. 17.

Re-entering the poll was No. 24 UTSA (12-1), winner of the Conference USA championship game Friday night over Western Kentucky, 49-41. Falling out of the Top 25 was San Diego State.

Ohio State rises three spots to No. 2 in AP Top 25

Ohio State’s steamrolling of Michigan State prompted a rise to No. 2 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll, released Sunday.

The 56-7 shellacking of the Spartans allowed the Buckeyes (10-1) to move up three spots in the poll.

Georgia (11-0) remains a unanimous No. 1 and can complete an unbeaten regular season by beating Georgia Tech (3-8) on Saturday.

Alabama (10-1) and Cincinnati (11-0) each dropped a spot and are ranked third and fourth, respectively.

Oregon (9-2) dropped from fourth to 11th after being dismantled 38-7 by Utah on Saturday night.

Notre Dame (10-1) is fifth, followed by Michigan. The Wolverines (10-1) host the Buckeyes on Saturday.

Oklahoma State (10-1) is seventh. Ole Miss (9-2), Baylor (9-2) and Oklahoma (10-1) round out the top 10.

Michigan State (9-2) dropped five spots to No. 12 after the loss to Ohio State.

BYU (9-2) sits in 13th, followed by Texas A&M (8-3) and UTSA (11-0).

The Utes (8-3) moved up eight spots to 16th after the rout of Oregon. Iowa (9-2), Wisconsin (8-3), Houston (10-1) and Pittsburgh (9-2) filled out the top 20.

Wake Forest (9-2) is No. 21 and San Diego State (10-1) is No. 22. Louisiana (10-1), North Carolina State (8-3) and Arkansas (7-4) round out the rankings.
