TJ Finley back in transfer portal after Tulane adds QB

One day after Tulane landed former Big Ten quarterback Brendan Sullivan in the transfer portal, suspended signal caller TJ Finley entered the portal on Friday morning.

Tulane was the fifth school for Finley, who was disciplined earlier this month after an arrest for alleged illegal possession of stolen items worth more than $25,000. A truck Finley allegedly was driving had the license plate of a stolen vehicle in Atlanta.

Finley’s attorney said the Ponchatoula, La., native was a victim of an online scam and was unaware the vehicle was stolen. He made a purchase via a social media marketplace, according to attorneys.

Tulane suspended Finley indefinitely after the arrest.

Finley is due in court on June 1 in New Orleans.

Finley has played one season at LSU, two at Auburn and one apiece at Texas State and Western Kentucky. He transferred to Tulane in December.

Finley has passed for 6,128 yards, 37 touchdowns and 20 interceptions during his college career. His most productive season was in 2023 when he passed for 3,439 yards, 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

On Thursday, Tulane received a commitment from Sullivan, who formerly played for Northwestern and Iowa.

Sullivan passed for 475 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions and rushed for 150 yards and four touchdowns last season in his lone campaign with the Hawkeyes.

Transfer portal active before official opening Monday

Oklahoma wide receiver Nic Anderson plans to enter the transfer portal when it officially opens on Monday, several reports said Thursday.

The 6-foot-4 Texas native hauled in 38 receptions for 798 yards and 10 touchdowns during the 2023 season. Then he missed nearly the entire 2024 season due to a nagging quad injury.

His 10 scores broke the Sooners’ freshman touchdown record.

Players around Division I have begun declaring their intention to enter the portal, which is officially open between Monday and Dec. 28. That includes Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold (1,421 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, three interceptions in 2024), a former five-star who was reported Wednesday to be jumping into the portal.

–Kentucky wide receiver Barion Brown announced that he plans to enter the transfer portal.

A preseason first-team All-American, Brown was held to just 29 receptions for 361 yards and three TD catches in his third season in Lexington, all representing career lows.

In 37 games, he has racked up 122 catches for 1,528 yards, 11 receiving TDs, two rushing scores and five kick return touchdowns.

Tight end Jordan Dingle also plans to move on from Kentucky. He had nine catches for 71 yards and a touchdown in 2024 and has 43 receptions for 615 yards and four scores in his career.

–Southern California wide receiver Kyron Hudson intends to enter the portal as a grad transfer with one year of eligibility remaining.

Hudson has been with the Trojans since 2021, but 2024 was his breakout season, setting or matching career highs of 38 receptions, 462 yards and three touchdowns.

He has 72 catches for 807 yards and eight TDs in 40 career games.

–Stanford quarterback Ashton Daniels filed paperwork to enter the portal, On3 reported.

Daniels made 10 starts in 2023 and nine more starts in 2024, when Stanford struggled to a 3-9 record. Daniels had 1,700 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 2024, along with a team-high 669 rushing yards and three scores on the ground.

For his career, Daniels has amassed 3,986 passing yards, 21 TDs, 20 picks, 1,117 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns.

–Quarterback E.J. Warner, the son of Kurt Warner, announced he will transfer from Rice after the program fired coach Mike Bloomgren earlier this season. New head coach Scott Abell is known for running a spread triple-option offense.

“Due to the scheme and philosophy change, I will be entering the transfer portal in hopes for finding the best fit for my final year of eligibility,” E.J. Warner wrote on social media.

Warner spent two years at Temple before transferring to Rice ahead of the 2024 season. He threw for 2,710 yards, 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions this season. He has led the American Athletic Conference in interceptions three years running.

–Southern Miss quarterback Tate Rodemaker is entering the portal, On3 reported.

Rodemaker is best known as the signal-caller who stepped in for the injured Jordan Travis at the end of Florida State’s 2023 season. Rodemaker threw five touchdowns without an interception in nine appearances for the Seminoles last year.

At Southern Miss, he threw for 985 yards, seven touchdowns and seven picks. The Golden Eagles fired head coach Will Hall in October and went on to finish 1-11.

Vasko threw for 2,110 yards, 14 touchdowns and eight picks in 2024. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

–Washington State running back Wayshawn Parker said he will enter the transfer portal with three years of eligibility remaining.

As a freshman for the 8-4 Cougars, Parker racked up 735 rushing yards on a 5.4 per-carry average and scored four touchdowns.

Washington State’s starting quarterback, John Mateer, is rumored to be a candidate to jump into the portal as well, though no announcement has been made. Offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle was recently hired by Oklahoma.

–New Mexico quarterback Devon Dampier told On3 that he is entering the transfer portal with two years of eligibility remaining. He passed for 2,768 yards and 12 TDs with 12 interceptions in 12 games and also rushed for 1,166 yards on 155 carries, a 7.5 average, and 19 TDs.

Division I Council cuts transfer portal windows to 30 total days

The NCAA Division I Council voted Tuesday in favor of shortening the transfer portal windows for both football and basketball.

The timeframes in which athletes could enter the transfer portal had already been trimmed once from 60 to 45 days. Tuesday’s decision brought those windows down to a combined 30 days.

Eliminating the spring window for football had been under consideration, but the Division I Council opted to keep it for players eyeing a transfer after the results of spring practices.

Football players will have a 20-day window during the winter and a 10-day window in the spring. The dates for the 2024-25 offseason will be Dec. 9-28 and April 16-25. Athletes in the portal can commit to a new school at any time, not only when the portal is open for them to enter.

The men’s and women’s basketball transfer portal will open for 30 days starting the day after the end of the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Athletes will still be given the opportunity to transfer for 30 days when their original school’s head coach departs for any reason, starting the day the departure is announced.

The timeline modifications should help athletic programs better navigate the offseason after the advent of the free one-time transfer coupled with name, image and likeness rights made for unprecedented amounts of player movement.

More than 2,800 FBS scholarship players entered the transfer portal during 2023-24. The number of men’s basketball players to hit the portal in 2024 was around 2,000, some estimates found.

Reports: NCAA looks at cutting spring portal window for football

The NCAA Football Oversight Committee proposed the elimination of the spring transfer portal window to the Division I council this week, Yahoo Sports and The Athletic reported Friday.

At present, Division I football players can enter the transfer portal in two different windows during the year: a 30-day period after the conference championship games are played, as well as April 16-30, which fall in line with spring practices. The April window is what’s on the chopping block.

Players do not need to commit to their new school during those windows. Those dates are merely when the athletes are able to enter the portal.

The Power 4 conferences and the American Football Coaches Association support the move to get rid of the April window, Yahoo reported.

The idea comes amid the settlement of the House v. NCAA court case that would impose 105-player scholarship limits in football and eliminate walk-ons starting in 2025-26.

The DI Council could vote on the recommendation to eliminate the spring portal window during meetings this fall.

Arizona State QB Jaden Rashada entering transfer portal

Arizona State quarterback Jaden Rashada will enter the transfer portal, he announced Thursday.

Rashada posted a message on Instagram thanking his teammates, coaches, strength staff and other support staff at Arizona State.

“With that being said I’ll be entering my name in the transfer portal seeking the best fit for my career!” Rashada wrote.

Rashada wound up at Arizona State and got into three games as a freshman, passing for 485 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. He has been out most of the spring after needing thumb surgery.

Georgia is expected to pursue Rashada, On3 and 247Sports reported.

Colorado cornerback Cormani McClain, a former five-star high school recruit, entered the transfer portal on Tuesday, according to multiple reports.

Tuesday was the first day of the spring transfer window. The portal will remain open for players to enter until April 30.

McClain appeared in nine games for the Buffaloes in 2023, Deion Sanders’ first season as Colorado’s coach. McClain started four games and finished the season with 13 tackles and two pass breakups.

He was the No. 1 cornerback in the Class of 2023, per the 247Sports composite rankings.

–Miami lost leading rusher Henry Parrish Jr. and backup quarterback Jacurri Brown to the portal.

Parrish gained 625 yards on the ground and scored six touchdowns for the Hurricanes in 2023. Across four seasons with Ole Miss (2020-21) and Miami (2022-23), Parrish amassed 2,057 rushing yards, 56 receptions for 384 yards and 17 total touchdowns (15 rushing).

In two seasons with the Beavers, Martinez had 2,167 rushing yards and 16 TDs on 355 carries in 25 games.

–True freshman offensive lineman Jason Zandamela is looking to transfer from Southern California, 247Sports reported.

Zandamela was the No. 4 interior offensive line prospect in the Class of 2024, per the 247Sports composite. He is a native of Mozambique who played rugby before moving to the United States.

–Kadyn Proctor is back in the portal with a “do not contact” label, multiple reports said, indicating the offensive lineman plans to return to Alabama.

Once a five-star offensive tackle prospect in the Class of 2023, Proctor — a native of Des Moines, Iowa — originally committed to Iowa before flipping to Alabama. After spending his freshman season with the Crimson Tide, he entered the portal following coach Nick Saban’s decision to retire.

Proctor committed to Iowa during the previous transfer window but announced on March 19 that he would not be staying with the Hawkeyes’ program and would re-enter the portal in the spring.

–Former four-star quarterback recruit Tad Hudson plans to transfer out of North Carolina, On3 reported.

Hudson did not see the field as a true freshman in Chapel Hill while backing up Drake Maye, a likely first-round pick in this month’s NFL draft.

Jefferson also ran for 447 yards and two touchdowns in 2023 and has gained 1,876 yards rushing and scored 21 rushing touchdowns over five seasons.

During Jefferson’s time on campus, Arkansas recovered from some lean years to go 9-4 in 2021 (with an AP ranking as high as No. 8) and 7-6 in 2022. But the Razorbacks fell to 4-8 (1-7 SEC) in 2023, and the program hired its former head coach, Bobby Petrino, as the new offensive coordinator under Sam Pittman.

Jefferson hails from Mississippi and was a four-star prospect coming out of high school. He earned MVP honors at both the Outback Bowl after the 2021 season and the Liberty Bowl after the 2022 campaign.

–Georgia defensive end Jonathan Jefferson will leave the Bulldogs, whom he joined as a four-star recruit in the 2021 class. He played in seven games this season, recording a lone tackle. Meanwhile, Keaten Wade recorded 35 tackles and a sack while appearing every game this season.

–NC State quarterback MJ Morris told 247Sports that LSU is among programs to contact him since entering the transfer portal. Morris has thrown for 1,367 yards with 14 touchdowns and six interceptions in nine games over the past two years.

Alabama QB Tyler Buchner in portal — to play lacrosse

Tyler Buchner is entering the transfer portal, but schools who need a quick fix at quarterback need not apply.

The Alabama quarterback, who made one start in his only season with the Crimson Tide, plans to return to lacrosse next season, several outlets reported Monday.

Considered a four-star football recruit in the Class of 2021, Buchner was a star lacrosse player growing up and committed to Michigan for lacrosse in eighth grade before focusing on football.

Buchner spent two seasons at Notre Dame before transferring to Alabama for the 2023 season. Head coach Nick Saban, deciding between Buchner, Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson for the full-time starting job, gave him a start in September after the program’s quarterback competition stretched the duration of fall camp.

That start came against South Florida. Buchner completed 5 of 14 passes for 34 yards before being benched for Simpson as the Crimson Tide got away with a 17-3 win.

Milroe eventually took back the starting job for good and led Alabama to the SEC title and the College Football Playoff.

In three seasons of college football, Buchner had a 54.7 completion percentage and threw for 1,010 yards, six touchdowns and eight interceptions.

ESPN reported that Buchner has not ruled out a return to football. Buchner has two years of NCAA eligibility remaining.

Oklahoma offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby talks with Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Dillon Gabriel (8) before a college football game between the University of Oklahoma Sooners (OU) and the TCU Horned Frogs at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, Okla., Friday, Nov. 24, 2023. Oklahoma won 69-45.

Oklahoma QB Dillon Gabriel enters portal, weighing 2024 draft

Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel entered the transfer portal while weighing his plans for the 2024 season.

Gabriel would be one of the most coveted transfers available for his final year of college eligibility. But he’s also likely to engage the college advisory committee to vet his status for the 2024 NFL Draft.

Gabriel declared Oklahoma was “forever home” in January. The Hawaii native threw for 3,168 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions, and 315 rushing yards with six touchdowns, in 2022 but opted to come back to the Sooners and rejected options via the portal and NFL draft.

At 5-11, 200, one of the main barriers to the NFL is likely to be size.

But Gabriel, who turns 23 later this month, was sixth in the FBS in passing yards in 2023 — 3,660 yards — with 30 touchdowns and six interceptions. He rushed for 12 touchdowns on a career-high 93 carries for 373 yards.

Gabriel transferred to Oklahoma from UCF after three seasons, following offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby to Norman. But Lebby was named head coach at Mississippi State, sparking speculation he could bring Gabriel with him.

Gabriel could revert from the portal and play for the Sooners in 2024. He has until Jan. 15 to enter the 2024 NFL Draft.
