North Carolina CB Tony Grimes, former top recruit, to transfer

North Carolina cornerback Tony Grimes, a former five-star recruit and three-year starter for the Tar Heels, announced Monday he will transfer.

“Thank you Tar Heel family for all the love and support these past three years,” Grimes wrote in a social media post. “After many prayers, and further discussion with family and friends, I have decided to enter the transfer portal to further pursue my football career and goals.”

Grimes, a 6-foot, 195-pound corner from Virginia Beach, was the No. 1 cornerback recruit in the Class of 2021, per the 247Sports composite rankings, before he reclassified to 2020.

Grimes made four starts as a true freshman in 2020 before becoming a full-time starter in 2021.

In 32 games over three seasons in Chapel Hill, Hill has tallied 19 pass breakups and 97 tackles with one interception and one sack.

Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz entering transfer portal

After starting at quarterback for Wisconsin for the past three seasons, Graham Mertz announced Sunday he is entering the transfer portal.

Mertz has two years of NCAA eligibility remaining, counting the extra year given to athletes who played amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mertz was one of the highest-ranked quarterback recruits in the Class of 2019. He took over as the Badgers’ starter in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and has started 32 straight games for the program since.

He leaves Wisconsin having completed 59.5 percent of his passes for 5,405 yards, 38 touchdowns and 26 interceptions in his career.

Wisconsin fired coach Paul Chryst on Oct. 2 and hired former Cincinnati coach Luke Fickell as his replacement in late November. The Badgers (6-6, 4-5 Big Ten) were selected Sunday to play in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl in Phoenix against Oklahoma State.

Texas A&M QB Haynes King, CB Denver Harris to transfer

Texas A&M quarterback Haynes King and cornerback Denver Harris entered the transfer portal Friday.

King is a graduate transfer, while Harris just completed his freshman season after arriving in College Station as a five-star prospect.

King was a part-time starter at quarterback for the Aggies in 2021 and 2022. His 2021 season was cut short after two starts due to a season-ending injury.

He appeared in six games this season and threw for 1,220 yards, seven touchdowns and six interceptions.

The Aggies also have former LSU transfer Max Johnson and freshman Conner Weigman at quarterback.

Harris, meanwhile, recorded 14 tackles and three pass breakups in his freshman season.

He was rated the No. 23 overall prospect and the fourth-best cornerback in the Class of 2022 according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. His signing contributed to the Aggies putting together the consensus No. 1 recruiting class in the cycle.

That didn’t help Texas A&M on the field this year. The Aggies (5-7, 2-6 SEC) missed out on bowl eligibility after a six-game losing streak marred their season.

Bo Nix, Auburn’s starting quarterback for the past three seasons, announced Sunday that he will enter the NCAA transfer portal.

“I have made so many decisions for Auburn, and now it’s time to do what’s best for me. It’s time that I move on to the next chapter in my life,” Nix said in a video posted to Instagram. “To reach further goals, I’ve decided it’s best to be a grad transfer and find a new start somewhere else.”

Nix graduated Auburn early and said he will be a graduate transfer in 2022.

In 34 games for the Tigers, Nix has thrown for 7,251 yards, 39 touchdowns and 16 interceptions, adding 18 rushing scores. In 2021, he completed a career-best 61 percent of his passes for 2,294 yards, 11 touchdowns and three picks with four rushing touchdowns as Auburn finished 6-6.
