Browns close facility after player tests positive for virus

The Cleveland Browns closed their facility in Berea, Ohio, for the second time in as many days on Wednesday after a player tested positive for COVID-19.

The Browns said they were informed of the positive test of the player, who wasn’t identified, on Wednesday morning. The team will work remotely for the remainder of the day as contact tracing is underway.

“The team will continue to consult with the league and medical experts on the appropriate next steps as the health and safety of our players, coaches, staff and the entire community remains our highest priority,” the Browns said in a statement.

Defensive end Myles Garrett, offensive lineman Chris Hubbard, fullback Andy Janovich and backup defensive end Joe Jackson currently are on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Garrett and Jackson will not be available for the Browns (7-3) on Sunday when they visit the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-9).

Reports: Broncos G Glasgow, Vikings LB positive for COVID-19

The Denver Broncos postponed practice Friday after a player tested positive for COVID-19, the team announced.

While the Broncos did not disclose the identity of the player, NFL Network reported that it was offensive guard Graham Glasgow. The 28-year-old has started six games for Denver this season.

The Broncos said they will conduct virtual meetings Friday and hold a practice session at UCHealth Training Center on Saturday.

“We were informed early this morning that a Broncos player has tested positive for COVID-19,” the team said in a statement. “The player is at home in self-isolation along with two other players who were determined to be close contacts. Our organization, which has been operating under the league’s intensive protocols, is in consultation with the NFL and taking guidance from medical experts.”

Broncos offensive line coach Mike Munchak entered COVID-19 protocols Tuesday and has not attended practice. Munchak, 60, joined the Broncos last year after coming up short in his bid for the head coaching job, which went to Vic Fangio.

Broncos running back coach Curtis Modkins returned to the team after testing positive for COVID-19, but 9News reported that contract tracing revealed Munchak’s case is unrelated. Being placed in the protocol means a person tested positive or came into contact with someone who did.

ESPN reported on Friday that a Minnesota Vikings linebacker tested positive for COVID-19.

Reports: Wisconsin QB Mertz awaits second COVID test result

Two days after Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz threw five touchdown passes in a season-opening win over Illinois, he is left waiting to find out whether a second test for COVID-19 will confirm a previous positive test, according to multiple news outlets Sunday.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel cited two sources in reporting that Graham, a redshirt freshman who completed 20 of 21 passes for 248 yards in the 45-7 win, tested positive. One of those sources said the first test was on Saturday.

If the second result also comes up positive, Mertz will be sidelined for 21 days, meaning he would miss the Badgers’ next three games – at Nebraska, at home against Purdue, and at No. 13 Michigan.

Among Big Ten protocols set up before the start of the delayed season, a positive result of a point of contact test, presumably the first test Mertz would have taken, is followed by a polymerase chain reaction test as a confirmation.

One of the Journal Sentinel’s sources said several tests at the school have produced initial positive tests that were not borne out by second tests.

ESPN reported that Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst is scheduled to meet with the media on Monday.

Mertz’s performance Friday opened eyes as he stepped in after Jack Coan, who threw for 2,727 yards as a junior last season, suffered a right foot injury on Oct. 3. He had surgery four days later and hopes to play this season.

Mertz’s completion percentage (95.2) and touchdown passes set school records for a single game, and he tied a team record with 17 consecutive pass completions.
