Bills S Taylor Rapp to IR, TE Dalton Kincaid iffy

Buffalo Bills safety Taylor Rapp was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury and head coach Sean McDermott plans to use a familiar face to fill the void.

McDermott said Jordan Poyer would be the next man up with Rapp out, starting Sunday against the host Carolina Panthers. Rapp has been dealing with a knee injury since training camp and safety Damar Hamlin is already on IR.

“Jordan wouldn’t be back if we didn’t have a lot of confidence and trust in him,” McDermott said.

Poyer, 34, signed to the practice squad prior to the season, made his 2025 debut against the Atlanta Falcons before Buffalo’s bye week. He played for the Bills from 2017-23 with 107 starts in those seven seasons before spending the 2024 season with the Miami Dolphins.

Wide receiver Curtis Samuel (ribs) returned to practice Friday and is expected to play against the Panthers.

Defensive tackle DaQuan Jones (calf) and wide receiver Joshua Palmer (ankle/knee) are also out Sunday.

Buffalo did not make a decision on whether to activate rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston for Week 8. The first-round pick began practicing on Wednesday, the start of his 21-day window to return from a knee injury.

“He’s done some good things,” McDermott said. “He really has. Again, just managing the expectations.”

McDermott said tight end Dalton Kincaid (oblique) was again limited on Friday and is questionable along with linebackers Matt Milano (pectoral) and Terrel Bernard (ankle).

Bills to add familiar face, S Jordan Poyer, to practice squad

Safety Jordan Poyer is back with the Bills, signing a deal to join Buffalo’s practice squad on Wednesday, multiple outlets reported.

Poyer, 34, spent last season with the Miami Dolphins but was a key figure in the Buffalo secondary from 2017-23.

Poyer was a first-team All-Pro in 2021 and a Pro Bowl selection in 2022.

The safety position remains a depth concern behind Bills starters Taylor Rapp and Cole Bishop.

Signing Poyer to the practice squad affords the Bills a window to measure his readiness to be placed on the active roster. If Poyer needs more of a runway to be considered game ready, the Bills can use of their 16-practice squad spots to stash the veteran and exercise refusal rights to add him to the active roster should another team attempt to bring him on board.

Poyer has 24 career interceptions, 12 sacks and nine forced fumbles in 12 NFL seasons.

Derek Carr digs at Raiders, helps AFC grab lead at Pro Bowl Games

Derek Carr had a parting shot for the Las Vegas Raiders as he helped the AFC take a 9-3 lead at the inaugural Pro Bowl Games skills competition on Thursday night in Las Vegas.

The “reimagined” Pro Bowl festivities got underway in prime time with Peyton Manning and Eli Manning captaining the AFC and NFC rosters, respectively. Four events were completed Thursday, each worth three points.

In the first event, “Precision Passing,” three quarterbacks from each conference took aim at targets under a time limit, including one five-point target hanging from a moving drone.

Carr, the last quarterback to take his turn, racked up 31 points to power the AFC to a 71-55 win over the NFC.

ESPN analyst Ryan Clark asked the Raiders veteran if he had ever gotten that hot in Las Vegas before.

“Not that hot,” Carr said. “That’s probably why I’m going somewhere else.”

It was perceived as a dig at the Raiders, the only NFL team he’s ever played for, who benched him with two games left in the 2022 regular season before they had been eliminated from playoff contention. Carr wrote a goodbye letter to Raiders fans in January, with the expectation that he would be released or traded this winter.

The AFC won an event called “Lightning Round” that featured a series of three games primarily for offensive and defensive linemen.

After a water balloon toss whittled the teams down, several for each conference advanced to “High Stakes,” in which the big men tried to field as many punts as they could while holding onto each football they caught.

Two players from each side advanced to the final event: Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson (who caught four punts), Cleveland Browns guard Joel Bitonio, Dallas Cowboys center Tyler Biadasz and New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan.

Hendrickson then won the three points for the AFC in “Thrill of the Spill,” a knockoff dunk tank setup that saw Hendrickson’s lob pass hit a target to dump confetti onto Eli Manning.

Some portions of the event were pre-recorded, including a “Best Catch” contest that showed four participants create high-difficulty catches in landmarks around Las Vegas. Fans will vote on whether Stefon Diggs of the Buffalo Bills or Pat Surtain II of the Denver Broncos will represent the AFC in Sunday’s final, as well as choosing between Minnesota Vikings star Justin Jefferson and Detroit Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown for the NFC finalist.

Also pre-recorded was a long-drive contest that helped the AFC take a 9-0 lead. Bills safety Jordan Poyer hit a 320-yard drive on the final swing of the event, surpassing Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson’s 316-yarder to win.

The NFC avoided being blanked for the night by beating the AFC in a dodgeball showdown.

Each conference fielded two teams of six, and the AFC defense defeated the AFC offense in one semifinal while the NFC offense beat the NFC defense in the other. In the finals, the NFC offense cruised to victory, ganging up on the AFC’s last man standing, Pittsburgh Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

The conclusion of the event Sunday afternoon will feature a flag football competition in place of what used to be a full 11-on-11 exhibition.

Bills QB Josh Allen (elbow) in line to play against Browns

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen appears to set to play in Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns in Detroit after not receiving an injury designation on Friday.

Allen has been dealing with a tender throwing elbow and he was a limited practice participant all week. Part of Buffalo’s treatment plan for Allen is to limit his throwing during the week.

Allen has passed for 2,733 yards, 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and added 476 yards and four TDs on the ground.

Buffalo didn’t practice Friday due to the heavy snowstorm that hit the area, which could also impact the ability to travel out of New York. The contest was moved to Detroit because of the storm that is expected to drop between 3 to 6 feet of snow.

Bills standout safety Jordan Poyer (elbow) is questionable, along with cornerback Kaiir Elam (ankle) and fullback Reggie Gilliam (illness). Middle linebacker Tremaine Edmunds (groin, heel), defensive end Greg Rousseau (ankle) and receiver Josh Kumerow (ankle) were ruled out.

Browns tight end David Njoku (ankle) was a limited practice participant on Friday and is questionable for the game. Ruled out for Cleveland are defensive backs Greg Newsome II (head) and D’Anthony Bell (concussion), guard Michael Dunn (back) and defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey (head).

Bills’ Jordan Poyer, Jets’ Corey Davis out for AFC East clash

Buffalo Bills safety Jordan Poyer and New York Jets wide receiver Corey Davis have been ruled out of Sunday’s game in East Rutherford, N.J.

Poyer had yet to practice this week after injuring his elbow in the second half of the Bills’ 27-17 victory over the Green Bay Packers last Sunday.

The absence of the All-Pro could result in newly acquired safety Dean Marlowe seeing additional time against the Jets. Marlowe, a former Bill, was acquired from the Atlanta Falcons on Tuesday.

Poyer, 31, has four interceptions to go along with 21 tackles in five games this season.

Linebackers Von Miller (ankle) and Matt Milano (oblique) are considered day-to-day with their respective injuries, Bills coach Sean McDermott said.

Davis, 27, will miss his second straight game after sustaining a knee injury in New York’s 16-9 victory over the Denver Broncos on Oct. 23.

Davis has 19 catches for 351 yards and two touchdowns in seven games this season.

Rookie Garrett Wilson, Braxton Berrios and Denzel Mims likely will see a bit more playing time in his absence.

Bills S Jordan Poyer, TE Dawson Knox out vs. Steelers

Injuries are denting the Buffalo secondary yet again with the Bills set to play the Pittsburgh Steelers without two of their top defensive backs.

Safety Jordan Poyer was ruled out on Friday with a rib injury. Poyer had two interceptions of Lamar Jackson to lead the Bills’ No. 1-ranked pass defense to victory over the Ravens.

In addition to Poyer, cornerback Christian Benford (hand) and tight end Dawson Knox (foot, hamstring) won’t suit up for Buffalo (3-1) in Week 5.

Head coach Sean McDermott confirmed their availability on Friday, but said pass rusher Von Miller was back at practice.

Pittsburgh (1-3) is turning the offense over to rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett in his first career start. Pickett replaced Mitchell Trubisky last week and scored two touchdowns on the ground but was intercepted three times.

Bills star S Jordan Poyer (elbow) expects to play in opener

Buffalo Bills veteran safety Jordan Poyer is progressing from a hyperextended elbow injury and is expected to play in Thursday’s NFL season opener against the host Los Angeles Rams.

Poyer was injured during a practice on Aug. 2 but remained hopeful he would be ready for the season opener.

He returned to the practice field Sunday and pronounced himself as fine.

“I’m good. Feel great,” Poyer told reporters after practice. “I feel ready to go, ready to play. Exciting time of year, missed quite a bit of training camp, but I felt good to be out there, out of the red jersey today, hitting again. It felt good.”

The 31-year-old Poyer is entering his sixth season with the Bills and 10th overall. He earned first-team All-Pro honors last season when he matched his career high of five interceptions to go with 93 tackles and a career-best three sacks.

Poyer was looking for a bigger payday in the offseason but nothing transpired. He is set to make $5.6 million in base salary this season before becoming an unrestricted free agent following the season.

Poyer has 643 career tackles, 20 interceptions, 11 sacks, seven forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries in 127 career games (89 starts) with the Philadelphia Eagles (2013), Cleveland Browns (2013-16) and Bills. He returned an interception for a score for the Bills in 2017.

Bills rule out S Jordan Poyer, G Jon Feliciano vs. Texans

Buffalo Bills safety Jordan Poyer and left guard Jon Feliciano will miss Sunday’s home game against the Houston Texans, coach Sean McDermott said Friday on his radio show.

Poyer (ankle) was injured last week against the Washington Football Team. Feliciano sustained a concussion during Wednesday’s practice.

Poyer had an interception in the 43-21 rout of Washington last Sunday. The 30-year-old has 12 tackles in three games this season for the Bills (2-1).

Poyer, a nine-year veteran, has 16 career interceptions in 114 games (76 starts) with the Philadelphia Eagles (2013), Cleveland Browns (2013-16) and Bills.

Feliciano, 29, has started all 28 games in which he has played since joining the Bills prior to the 2019 seasons. He spent his first four seasons with the then-Oakland Raiders and started eight of 48 games played.

McDermott also said cornerback Taron Johnson (groin) and defensive end Efe Obada (ankle) will likely be listed as questionable when the Bills release their injury report later Friday.
