Colts sign G Quenton Nelson to 4-year extension

The Indianapolis Colts signed All-Pro Quenton Nelson to a four-year extension Saturday night, reportedly making him the highest-paid guard in NFL history.

The Colts announced the signing but didn’t release financials. However, ESPN and NFL Network both reported the deal is worth $80 million, including $60 million in guaranteed money.

Nelson, 26, is now under contract through 2026.

“Everyone knows what great ability he has, but I think what makes Quenton special is how smart he plays and how instinctive he is,” head coach Frank Reich said. “I think that’s what takes his game over the top. He’s a physically dominant player, but it’s his instincts and his intelligence that take him I think to another level.”

Nelson is a four-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time, first-team All Pro.

The Colts selected Nelson No. 6 overall in the 2018 draft.

Colts activate Quenton Nelson, 4 others from COVID list

The Indianapolis Colts activated starting left guard Quenton Nelson and four others from the COVID-19 reserve list on Wednesday.

Also activated were starting right guard Mark Glowinski, defensive end Kemoko Turay, cornerback Rock Ya-Sin and practice squad tight end Farrod Green.

Nelson, 25, was the Colts’ 2018 first-round pick (sixth overall) out of Notre Dame. He has been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his four NFL seasons.

Glowinski, 29, was drafted in the fourth round by Seattle in 2015 and spent three seasons with the Seahawks before joining the Colts.

Turay, 26, is in his fourth season with the Colts and has seven tackles, including five sacks, in 11 games this season.

Ya-Sin, 25, has 26 tackles and a forced fumble in 11 games (six starts) in his third season with Indianapolis.

Nine players, including linebacker Darius Leonard and quarterback Carson Wentz, remain on the COVID list as the Colts (9-6) prepare for Sunday’s visit from the Las Vegas Raiders (8-7).

Colts place G Quenton Nelson on COVID list

The Indianapolis Colts placed All-Pro left guard Quenton Nelson on the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday.

Nelson, 25, has started 11 games this season and was named to the Pro Bowl this week, his fourth selection in as many seasons.

He missed three games this year with an ankle injury and has started 59 of the Colts’ 62 games since they picked him sixth overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.

The Colts (8-6) were already missing two starting offensive linemen for Saturday night’s game against the Arizona Cardinals (10-4) in Glendale, Ariz.

Right guard Mark Glowinski entered the health and safety protocols on Thursday. Pro Bowl center Ryan Kelly is not with the team while mourning the recent loss of his baby daughter.

Colts star G Quenton Nelson designated to return from IR

The Indianapolis Colts designated All-Pro left guard Quenton Nelson to return from injured reserve on Wednesday. He now is eligible to practice and can be activated within the next 21 days.

Nelson has been on injured reserve since Oct. 2 because of an ankle injury and missed the past three games.

The 25-year-old Nelson will start out slowly at practice, coach Frank Reich said. But Reich didn’t shut the door on the chance of Nelson playing Sunday night when the Colts (2-4) visit the San Francisco 49ers (2-3).

Before the injury, Nelson started 51 consecutive games to begin his career after being taken by the Colts with the sixth overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. He has been an All-Pro selection each season of his career thus far.

Colts place G Quenton Nelson (ankle) on IR

The Indianapolis Colts placed three-time Pro Bowl left guard Quenton Nelson on injured reserve Saturday.

Nelson is nursing an ankle injury and will miss at least the next three games.

Nelson, 25, will see his streak of consecutive starts come to a halt on Sunday against the host Miami Dolphins (1-2). He started 51 consecutive games to begin his career after being taken by the Colts with the sixth overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Also on Saturday, Indianapolis (0-3) elevated safety Ibraheim Campbell and quarterback Brett Hundley to the active roster from the practice squad.

Campbell, 29, has recorded 116 tackles, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery in 58 career games with the Cleveland Browns (2015-17), Houston Texans (2017), Dallas Cowboys (2018), New York Jets (2018), Green Bay Packers (2018-19) and Colts.

Hundley, 28, has thrown for 1,902 yards with nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 18 career games with the Packers (2016-17) and Arizona Cardinals (2019).

Colts OG Quenton Nelson ruled out vs. Dolphins

Indianapolis Colts left guard Quenton Nelson will see his streak of consecutive starts come to a halt on Sunday against the host Miami Dolphins.

Nelson, 25, is nursing an ankle injury and has been ruled out for the contest. The three-time Pro Bowl selection started 51 consecutive games to begin his career after being taken by the Colts with the sixth overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Defensive end Kwity Paye (hamstring), safety Khari Willis (groin) and cornerback Rock Ya-Sin (ankle) also have been ruled out Sunday’s game for the Colts (0-3). All three sustained their injuries during Indianapolis’ 25-16 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Right tackle Braden Smith (foot/thumb) will also miss Sunday’s contest against the Dolphins (1-2). He was injured in the Colts’ season-opening 28-16 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 12.

Seven starters miss practice for Colts, with Carson Wentz limited

Seven of the Indianapolis Colts’ 22 starters did not practice Thursday, three days out from their road contest at the Miami Dolphins.

Quarterback Carson Wentz, however, was able to practice on a limited basis for the second straight day as he deals with two sprained ankles.

Tight end Jack Doyle (back), All-Pro left guard Quenton Nelson (ankle/knee) and right tackle Braden Smith (foot/thumb) missed practice for the second straight day on offense. Three more on defense have now missed two in a row: rookie defensive end Kwity Paye (hamstring), safety Khari Willis (ankle/groin) and cornerback Rock Ya-Sin (ankle).

Right guard Mark Glowinski (knee) went from limited participation in Wednesday’s practice to being held out of Thursday’s, meaning there’s danger that Indianapolis could be down three of its starting offensive linemen come Sunday.

It wasn’t all dire news for the Colts. Left tackle Eric Fisher was back to full participation after a rest day Wednesday, and Pro Bowl linebacker Darius Leonard (ankle) returned to practice on a limited basis. Running back Jonathan Taylor (knee) remained limited for the second straight day.

Colts’ Darius Leonard, Quenton Nelson miss practice

The Indianapolis Colts were missing All-Pros from both sides of the ball Wednesday as linebacker Darius Leonard and Quenton Nelson sat out with injuries.

Leonard continues to battle an ankle injury and Nelson was out with foot and back injuries. Both players played every down in the Colts’ Week 1 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

A two-time All-Pro, Leonard had five tackles and a forced fumble vs. Seattle. Nelson, a three-time All-Pro, played all 76 snaps on offense.

Starting right tackle Braden Smith also missed practice with a foot injury. Cornerback Xavier Rhodes, inactive for Week 1, missed with a calf injury.

Offensive tackle Eric Fisher was a limited participant Wednesday as he continues to recover from a ruptured Achilles. Fisher was limited last week, too, and is hoping to make his Colts debut against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.

“(I’m) feeling real good. I’ve been doing everything I can in my power to be available for this team,” Fisher said. “My role has progressed and progressed. I’ll leave my status and my role up to the coaches and training staff. I’m doing my part to make sure I’m rehabbing as hard as I can, practicing as hard as I can and just being ready when my number’s called.”

Colts activate OL Quenton Nelson off COVID list

The Indianapolis Colts activated All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson off the reserve/COVD-19 list Monday.

Nelson was put on the list late last week for being a close contact to fellow lineman Eric Fisher, who contracted the virus. Fisher remains on the COVID list while still on the physically unable to perform list, recovering from January surgery to repair a torn Achilles.

Nelson, 25, has played in and started all 48 games for the Colts since they took him No. 6 overall in the 2018 draft. He is a three-time All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection.

Nelson has been limited as he recovers from right foot surgery earlier this month.

The Colts also put offensive tackle Sam Tevi on injured reserve due to a torn ACL he sustained Friday in the preseason finale against the Detroit Lions. The Colts signed Tevi in the offseason after a four-year run with the Los Angeles Chargers. He played in 58 games (44 starts) for the Chargers.

The team also reportedly released safety Sean Davis, whom the Colts signed in April. He played in 64 games (42 starts) for the Pittsburgh Steelers since being selected in the second round of the 2016 draft out of Maryland.

Colts say Carson Wentz to return to practice Monday

Indianapolis Colts coach Frank Reich said Sunday that quarterback Carson Wentz, guard Quenton Nelson and center Ryan Kelly will return to practice Monday on a limited basis after each sustained injuries earlier in training camp.

Wentz needed surgery on his left foot in early August and initially was given a return timetable of five to 12 weeks.

“You’re going to see him out there on the practice field this week,” Reich said. “He’ll be out there tomorrow taking some things … It’ll be limited. He’ll be limited but he will be participating, as will (Ryan) Kelly and as will Quenton Nelson.”

Reich previously told reporters that Wentz had a previous foot injury dating back to high school. A broken bone loosened and caused pain for Wentz, and the surgery was planned to remove that bone entirely.

The Colts acquired Wentz from the Philadelphia Eagles in March for a 2021 third-round draft pick and a conditional 2022 second-rounder. Wentz, who struggled mightily in 2020, previously played for Reich when Reich was Philadelphia’s offensive coordinator.

Jacob Eason has taken first-team snaps for Indianapolis, including during preseason games. Rookie Sam Ehlinger also has been in the mix.

Nelson, considered one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL, also required foot surgery at the start of the month. The No. 6 overall pick of the 2018 draft has been a first-team All-Pro and a Pro Bowler in all three seasons of his career to date.

Kelly sustained an elbow injury in a practice in late July. A first-round pick in 2016, Kelly was made the highest-paid center in the NFL with a contract extension last September and went on to earn a second-team All-Pro selection in 2020.

The Colts will host the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 12 for their season opener.
