Reports: Bears trade DE Robert Quinn to Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles acquired veteran defensive end Robert Quinn from the Chicago Bears for a fourth-round draft pick, according to multiple reports on Wednesday.

Quinn, 32, has just one sack in seven games this season after setting a Bears’ single-season record with 18.5 last season.

He stayed away from minicamp and offseason workouts in search of a contract extension but eventually reported in July. He is in the third season of a five-year, $70 million deal.

Bears linebacker Roquan Smith broke down in tears during a news conference when informed about the trade.

The 12-year veteran has 102 sacks and 32 forced fumbles in 163 career games (142 starts). He is a three-time Pro Bowler, earning the honors for the then-St. Louis Rams in 2013 and 2014 and with the Bears last season.

Quinn has just eight tackles in seven games this season. He has 367 stops and 176 QB hits during his career.

Quinn played for the Rams from 2011-17 (the final two seasons in Los Angeles) before stops with the Miami Dolphins (2018), Dallas Cowboys (2019) and the Bears.

He recorded a career-best 19 sacks for St. Louis in 2013.

Quinn joins the NFL’s lone unbeaten team in the Eagles (6-0). Philadelphia is tied for 10th in the NFL with 17 sacks.

No holdout: Bears LB Roquan Smith, DE Robert Quinn report to camp

Contract posturing might not have ended for All-Pro linebacker Roquan Smith and defensive end Robert Quinn, who reported to the Chicago Bears on schedule for the start of training camp.

Smith and Quinn are angling for contract extensions following stellar seasons in 2021 and are unsigned past 2022.

Smith, 25, is owed $9.7 million this season and already proved he’s willing to draw a line in the sand on money matters, having held out for the first month of camp as a 2018 rookie in a contract language dispute.

NFL Network reported Smith doesn’t plan to participate in training camp workouts based on his expiring contract.

“I love the player and the person,” first-year GM Ryan Poles said of Smith on Tuesday.

Poles said the Bears are aware of contract situations with several key veterans — running back David Montgomery has also entered the final season of his contract — that will be addressed. The Bears are scheduled to have nearly $115 million in cap space in 2023.

Quinn, 32, did not attend offseason workouts or mandatory minicamp after posting 18.5 sacks last season. He has $12.8 million due in 2022, but has a history of back injuries and has been rumored to be on the trading block.

Though the Bears unloaded Quinn’s sidekick Khalil Mack to the Los Angeles Chargers, Poles said he hasn’t discussed trading Quinn.

Cowboys DC Dan Quinn commits to stay for ’22 season

Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn committed to return to the team for the 2022 season, removing himself from consideration for remaining NFL head coach positions.

Quinn interviewed with the Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears, who selected other coaches on Thursday, and twice interviewed with the New York Giants.

Quinn was also a candidate to become head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins. He removed himself from consideration for those posts on Thursday.

As head coach of the Falcons, Quinn was 43-42 and took Atlanta to Super Bowl LI, finishing as runner-up in a 34-28 loss to the New England Patriots.

He was fired in 2020 and spent last season as defensive coordinator of the Cowboys under Mike McCarthy.

While Quinn is likely to be a coaching candidate again in January 2023, McCarthy’s future is not guaranteed after a wild-card round loss to the San Francisco 49ers that left owner Jerry Jones “as disappointed as I’ve ever been after a loss.”

Reports: Broncos narrow coaching search to 3 finalists

The Denver Broncos have narrowed their coaching search to three names, multiple outlets reported Monday.

Dan Quinn, Nathaniel Hackett and Kevin O’Connell are said to be the finalists to replace the fired Vic Fangio.

General manager George Paton is expected to have a second round of interviews with all three this week.

Quinn, 51, previously the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons (2015-20), helped resurrect the Dallas defense in his first season as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator in 2021.

Hackett, 42, just completed his third season as the offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers after holding the same position with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2016-18) and Buffalo Bills (2013-14)

O’Connell, 36, is in his second season as the Los Angeles Rams’ offensive coordinator, a role he also held with the then-Washington Redskins in 2019.

Quinn, the only finalist with head coaching experience, has also been linked to the vacancies with the Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears and New York Giants.

Quinn and Paton worked together with the Miami Dolphins when Quinn coached the defensive line (2005-06) and Paton was the director of pro personnel.

Reports: Falcons offer HC job to Arthur Smith

Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith received a formal offer to become head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, according to multiple reports Friday.

Smith was a coveted candidate in the coaching cycle that began churning in early January. He received requests to interview for all seven vacancies, ESPN reported.

The Titans finished fourth in the NFL in scoring at 30.7 points per game and won the AFC South.

Smith has received praise for his work as offensive coordinator since he was promoted from tight ends coach two years ago. Current Titans head coach Mike Vrabel gives Smith credit for turning Ryan Tannehill’s career fortunes around last season, and the Titans just produced a 2,000-yard rusher in Derrick Henry.

The Falcons parted with Dan Quinn during the 2020 season and promoted Raheem Morris to interim head coach.

Myriad issues face the new braintrust of the Falcons, which will include a new general manager. Interviews for both positions took place unilaterally since the season ended.

Atlanta is squeezed against the salary cap by massive contracts for quarterback Matt Ryan and wide receiver Julio Jones. Owner Arthur Blank said he would not block an attempt by the new regime to trade one or both players in a rebuilding effort.

The Titans reportedly have been anticipating Smith’s departure by reaching out to prominent college offensive coordinators in recent days.

Smith has worked with the Titans in multiple capacities since 2011 under coaches Mike Munchak, Ken Whisenhunt, Mike Mularkey and Vrabel.

Smith worked closely with current Packers head coach Matt LaFleur with the Titans and during his initial NFL job, Smith was quality control coach of the Washington Football Team. Joe Gibbs was the head coach of the team in 2007, and Jim Zorn took over in 2008.

Smith, 38, attended the University of North Carolina to play basketball but his career was shortened because of a foot injury. He played offensive line in high school.

Bears pass rushers Quinn, Mack might miss opener

Chicago Bears defensive ends Robert Quinn and Khalil Mack are on shaky footing to play in the season opener at Detroit on Sunday.

Quinn missed practiced Friday and hasn’t been on the field this week due to an ankle injury and was listed as doubtful on Friday.

Mack, hobbled by a knee injury, practiced Friday for the first time this week. He is questionable for Week 1.

The Bears also listed running back David Montgomery as questionable. Montgomery said Thursday he wouldn’t rush back from a groin strain and risk fighting the issue all season. He practiced Thursday and Friday.

Tarik Cohen has taken the majority of first-team reps the past two weeks at running back.

Quinn signed as an unrestricted free agent in March. His five-year, $70 million deal includes $30 million guaranteed.
