Saints alter contracts of RT Ryan Ramczyk, K Wil Lutz

Scrambling to be salary cap compliant before the start of the NFL league year next month, the New Orleans Saints adjusted the contracts of offensive tackle Ryan Ramczyk and kicker Wil Lutz.

New Orleans began the offseason with the second-worst salary cap situation as tracked by ESPN and NFL Network at nearly $48 million over the 2023 cap.

The combined savings on the 2023 salary cap of $11.836 million gets New Orleans closer to being under the salary cap and ready for the business of free agency, but further alterations to existing deals and other roster moves are expected from the Saints.

A right tackle drafted with the 32nd pick in 2017, Ramczykm 29, has spent his entire career with the Saints.

NFL Network reported the Saints shifted $12.92 million of Ramczyk’s 2023 base salary to a bonus, creating $10.336 million in cap space. He signed a five-year, $96 million deal in July 2021 that included high salaries in 2023 and beyond, including $17 million in 2024, $18 million in 2025 and $19 million in 2026.

Lutz was offered a lower cap number — reduced by $1.5 million — in exchange for attainable incentives, ESPN reported.

The 28-year-old Lutz has been with the Saints since 2016 and has a career field-goal percentage of 84.6.

Report: Saints clear $26M in cap space with restructured deals

The New Orleans Saints cleared more than $26 million in cap space by restructuring the contracts of wide receiver Michael Thomas and offensive tackle Ryan Ramczyk, ESPN reported Saturday.

The Saints entered the offseason $75 million over the projected 2022 salary cap, the most of any team in the NFL, and more moves are anticipated in the coming days.

The Saints converted $14.6 million of Thomas’ scheduled salary and roster bonuses into a signing bonus. They did the same with $18.2 million of Ramczyk’s money.

The move with Thomas likely indicates New Orleans isn’t planning to trade the three-time Pro Bowl selection, who missed the entire 2021 season with an ankle injury.

Thomas, who turns 29 on March 3, was the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2019 and has 510 receptions for 5,950 yards and 32 touchdowns in 70 games over five seasons with the Saints.

Ramczyk, 27, has played in 73 games (all starts) over five seasons since New Orleans drafted him in the first round in 2017. He was an All-Pro selection in 2019 and appeared in 10 games in 2021.

Report: Saints RB Alvin Kamara (knee) won’t play Thursday

New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara and two starting tackles will miss Thursday night’s game against the visiting Dallas Cowboys, multiple outlets reported.

Kamara, right tackle Ryan Ramczyk and left tackle Terron Armstead are all dealing with knee injuries and had been listed as questionable for the Saints (5-6) against the Cowboys (7-4).

Kamara, 26, will miss his fourth straight game. The four-time Pro Bowl selection has posted 530 rushing yards, 310 receiving yards and seven touchdowns from scrimmage in eight games this season.

Ramczyk, 27, is out for the third straight contest. The former All-Pro has started all 72 of his games since the Saints drafted him in the first round in 2017, including nine starts this season.

Armstead, 30, will miss his sixth game this season. The three-time Pro Bowl selection has started 92 of his 96 games with the Saints since they made him a third-round pick in 2013.
