Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza now odds-on Heisman favorite

Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza may have put a vice-grip on the Heisman Trophy with his four-touchdown performance in the Hoosiers’ blowout win over Wisconsin on Saturday.

The junior moved from being a co-favorite at +175 along with Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin at BetMGM last week to the -115 favorite on Monday. That’s well ahead of Sayin, who had another strong outing in the Buckeyes’ 48-10 trouncing of UCLA.

Sayin now has 25 touchdowns against four interceptions on the season, but he is at the helm of an offense chock full of NFL talent. Mendoza has thrown 30 TDs against five interceptions and his monster game in the 31-7 win over the Badgers came on the heels of what might have been his “Heisman moment” with a game-winning touchdown at Penn State.

The only other player with shorter than +2200 odds is Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed, who remained in the conversation at +500 after leading the Aggies’ massive second-half comeback against South Carolina.

Mendoza is the -105 favorite at DraftKings, followed by Sayin at +170, Reed at +500 and Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia at +1500.

Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, who nosed into the favorite spot earlier this month, saw his Heisman hopes dashed with the Crimson Tide’s second loss of the season. He is now a +15000 longshot after throwing just his second interception of the season in a 23-21 home loss to Oklahoma.

The public got behind Simpson’s steady rise from a preseason longshot. He is currently the book’s biggest liability, having been backed by the most money at 15.5% ahead of Oregon quarterback Dante Moore at 12.1%. Moore is the book’s third-biggest liability, with Smith second. The Ohio State wide receiver leads the way with 8.5% of all bets placed on this year’s Heisman winner.

Sportsbooks stand to make out well in this year’s Heisman market. Quarterbacks Arch Manning (Texas), Garrett Nussmeier (LSU), Carson Beck (Miami), John Mateer (Oklahoma), LaNorris Sellers (South Carolina) and Moore are no longer part of the picture after spending time atop the list at various points during the season.

Meanwhile, Mendoza has drawn a modest 5.7% of all bets since opening as a +5500 longshot. He has one regular-season game remaining at Purdue, which will take a nine-game losing streak into the Nov. 28 game.

Cornerback DJ Reed being interviewed as players arrived today to participate in the NY Jets 2023 Training Camp at their practice facility in Florham Park, NJ.

Reports: Lions, DJ Reed agree to $48M deal

Free agent cornerback DJ Reed agreed to a three-year, $48 million contract with the Detroit Lions, according to multiple reports Monday.

Reed spent the past three seasons with the New York Jets and details of his deal with the Lions came soon after news of the Patriots signing away Carlton Davis, who played with Detroit in 2024.

Reed, 28, was a fifth-round pick of the 49ers in 2018 and was claimed off waivers by the Seahawks in 2020 before signing a three-year, $33 million contract with the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in 2022.

Reed has six career interceptions and 51 passes defensed.

The 5-9, 195-pound corner can play inside for the Lions, who employ a significant number of nickel packages to maximize the versatility of their safety tandem of Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch.

The cornerback room in Detroit is green behind Reed and Amik Robertson, 26, who emerged as the top cover corner after Davis broke his jaw in December.

A pair of 2024 draft picks, Terrion Arnold (first round) and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. (second), are also on the current CB depth chart. Arnold is projected as a starter again after making 15 starts in 16 games as a rookie. Rakestraw was never fully healthy because of a hamstring injury.

Reports: Seahawks re-sign DT Jarran Reed, LB Ernest Jones IV

The Seattle Seahawks are retaining defensive tackle Jarran Reed and linebacker Ernest Jones IV on three-year deals, according to multiple reports on Sunday.

Reed’s deal is reportedly worth $25 million while Jones will reportedly receive $33 million with $15 million guaranteed.

Reed just finished the second season of his second stint with the Seahawks. He had 45 tackles and 4.5 sacks last season after notching seven sacks in 2023.

Jones was acquired from the Tennessee Titans in late October and had 94 tackles and one interception with Seattle. Overall, he had 138 tackles last season, including his six games with Tennessee.

Jones, 25, was a third-round pick by the Los Angeles Rams in the 2021 draft and has 458 tackles, six sacks and four interceptions in 63 regular-season games (48 starts) with the Rams (2021-23), Titans (2024) and Seahawks. He was a member of the Rams’ squad that won the Super Bowl during the 2021 season.

Jones was traded to the Titans shortly before the start of the 2024 season.

Reed, 32, was a second-round pick by the Seahawks in 2016 and spent the first five seasons of his career in Seattle before spending single seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs (2021) and Green Bay Packers (2022).

Reed had a career-high 10.5 sacks for Seattle in 2018. He has recorded 33.5 of his 38.5 career sacks with the Seahawks.

Reed also has 388 tackles, eight forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries in 139 regular-season games (118 starts).

New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner (1) catches the ball during warmups before a game against the New England Patriots.

Jets CBs Sauce Gardner, D.J. Reed clear concussion protocol

New York Jets starting cornerbacks Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed have both cleared concussion protocol, coach Robert Saleh said Friday.

Reed has missed two games and Gardner missed the Week 6 win against the Philadelphia Eagles. Coming off a bye week, both are expected to play Sunday against the New York Giants.

Gardner, 23, has 20 tackles, three passes defensed and a forced fumble in five starts this season. The 2022 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year has two interceptions, 23 passes defensed and 95 tackles in 22 games (all starts).

Reed, 26, recorded 28 tackles in four starts before he was sidelined after Week 4. He has five picks and 302 tackles in 76 games (45 starts) with the San Francisco 49ers (2018-19), Seattle Seahawks (2020-21) and Jets.

Jets rule out CB Sauce Gardner (concussion)

The New York Jets ruled out Sauce Gardner (concussion) for Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles, putting the team down its two top cornerbacks.

The Jets (2-3) ruled out D.J. Reed on Friday, also with a concussion. Reed also missed last week’s game win over Denver.

Gardner took to social media to say he feels “perfectly fine” despite not clearing the concussion protocol.

“That’s the crazy part about it,” Gardner posted to X.

Bryce Hall and Craig James are expected to get the starts at cornerback on Sunday against the Eagles (5-0), tasked with defending Devonta Smith and A.J. Brown.

Gardner has 20 tackles, three passes defensed and a forced fumble in five starts this season. Sunday will mark his first game missed as a pro.

Reed started all four games before being sidelined after Week 4.

Jets CB D.J. Reed (concussion) ruled out for Sunday

New York Jets cornerback D.J. Reed will miss Sunday’s game in Denver due to a concussion.

Reed’s absence leaves the Jets (1-3) without two of their top cornerbacks against the Broncos (1-3).

Brandin Echols previously was ruled out for the Week 5 contest with a hamstring injury.

Reed, 26, has 28 tackles through four starts this season. He has five interceptions and 302 tackles in 76 games (45 starts) with the San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and Jets.

Jets coach Robert Saleh declined to divulge his plan to fill the holes in the secondary.

Based on the depth chart, it’s likely that Michael Carter II and Bryce Hall would join starter Sauce Gardner in the rotation, along with special-teamer Justin Hardee.
