Report: UVA game at Virginia Tech may be rescheduled

The Virginia football team’s season finale at Virginia Tech scheduled for this Saturday may be pushed back to Dec. 3, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Monday.

The Cavaliers canceled their Nov. 19 home game against Coastal Carolina in the wake of a campus shooting that claimed the lives of three football players and seriously injured a fourth.

Virginia (3-7, 1-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) has lost three straight games and six of its past seven under first-year head coach Tony Elliott.

Virginia Tech (3-8, 1-6) snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 23-22 win at Liberty on Saturday.

Reports: NFL to move three weekend games due to COVID-19

The NFL is moving Saturday afternoon’s scheduled game between the Cleveland Browns and Las Vegas Raiders to Monday night, multiple outlets reported, because of the Browns’ battle against COVID-19.

Friday afternoon, the NFL also was working to move the Sunday games between the Washington Football Team and Philadelphia Eagles, as well as the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks, to Tuesday night, per reports.

Cleveland, Washington and the Rams all have more than 20 cases of COVID-19. Moving the games by 48 hours could give time for some players to clear health and safety protocols.

In the case of Cleveland and Washington, both their starting quarterbacks — Baker Mayfield and Taylor Heinicke, respectively — as well as their backups are in the protocol.

ESPN reported the Raiders and Browns will play the first game of a Monday night doubleheader at 5 p.m. in Cleveland. The regularly scheduled game between the Minnesota Vikings and host Chicago Bears at Soldier Field will follow at 8:20 p.m.

Charlotte, Western Kentucky move game to a weekday morning

Charlotte and Western Kentucky will play a rare Tuesday morning game to give the 49ers a chance to clear COVID-19 protocols.

The Conference USA game was scheduled for Saturday and will instead be played Dec. 1 at 10:30 a.m. in Charlotte. The 49ers would not have been able to play this weekend, the school said in a news release on Monday.

“We appreciate WKU working with us and the league office to make this game happen,” Charlotte athletic director Mike Hill said. “This has been a challenging season for our team, and we are grateful for each and every opportunity we have to compete. It took some creativity — but we are willing to look at all options to reward our student-athletes for all the work they continue to put forth.”

This is the second game that Charlotte (2-3, 2-1 C-USA) has rescheduled because of the pandemic. Games against North Carolina, Gardner-Webb, Georgia State and Middle Tennessee weren’t played earlier this year, and last weekend’s game against Marshall was called off because of the outbreak in the Charlotte program.

The Hilltoppers (4-6, 3-3) have avoided any COVID-19 schedule changes and will end their season against Charlotte.
