Patriots place RB Rhamondre Stevenson (ankle) on IR

New England Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson’s season ended Wednesday, as he was placed on injured reserve because of a sprained right ankle.

Stevenson has missed the past three games with a high ankle sprain after being tackled by Chargers linebacker Tuli Tuipulotu in the first quarter of Los Angeles’ 6-0 victory on Dec. 3. Tuipulotu also recovered Stevenson’s fumble on the play.

Stevenson, 25, started the first 12 games of the season for the Patriots, rushing 156 times for 619 yards and four touchdowns. He averaged 4.0 yards per attempt and 51.6 per game.

Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson not spotted at practice

Running back Rhamondre Stevenson was among three New England Patriots players not spotted at practice on Friday during the portion open to the media.

Cornerback Jack Jones and backup quarterback Matt Corral were the other players missing from the session.

The Patriots will reveal their practice/injury report later on Friday. The team hosts the Philadelphia Eagles in its season opener on Sunday in Foxborough, Mass.

Stevenson, 25, led New England in carries (210), rushing yards (1,040) and rushing touchdowns (five) in 17 games last season.

Offseason acquisition Ezekiel Elliott would be in line for additional work should Stevenson be unable to play on Sunday. Elliott, a two-time rushing champion, rushed for a career-low 876 yards and 3.8 yards per carry in 2022 in 15 games (14 starts) with the Dallas Cowboys.

Jones sustained a hamstring injury on Wednesday and missed Thursday’s practice.

Corral, who missed his first practice of the week, is the only other quarterback on the roster outside of starter Mac Jones. Quarterbacks Bailey Zappe and undrafted Malik Cunningham are on the practice squad.

Reports: RB Ezekiel Elliott to visit Patriots

Free agent running back Ezekiel Elliott is scheduled to visit the New England Patriots on Saturday, multiple media outlets reported.

A two-time rushing champion, Elliott is making his first known visit with an NFL team since being released by the Dallas Cowboys on March 15.

Third-year pro Rhamondre Stevenson tops the running back depth chart for the Patriots, who released James Robinson last month. Fellow running back Ty Montgomery is nursing an undisclosed left leg/knee injury.

Second-year running backs Pierre Strong and Kevin Harris and third-year player J.J. Taylor also are on New England’s roster.

Elliott, 28, was slowed in the second half of last season by a knee injury and wasn’t fully healthy in 2021. He rushed for a career-low 876 yards and 3.8 yards per carry in 2022 in 15 games (14 starts) while backup Tony Pollard emerged as a 1,000-yard rusher and big-play threat.

Elliott led the NFL in rushing in 2016 and 2018 and registered four 1,000-yard seasons. The 2016 first-round pick (fourth overall) ranks third in Dallas history in rushing yards (8,262) and rushing touchdowns (68) behind Hall of Fame inductees Emmitt Smith and Tony Dorsett.

Harris, 25, has rushed 84 times for 383 yards and three touchdowns in nine games this season.

Running back Rhamondre Stevenson (ankle), who leads the team in carries (164), rushing yards (742) and rushing touchdowns (four), is questionable for the Patriots (7-6).

Wide receiver Jakobi Meyers (concussion), cornerback Jack Jones (knee), offensive tackle Yodny Cajuste (calf, back) and long snapper Joe Cardona (ankle) also are questionable to face the Raiders (5-8).

Patriots RB Damien Harris ruled out vs. Browns

New England Patriots running back Damien Harris has been downgraded and will be out for Sunday’s home game against the Cleveland Browns.

Harris sustained a concussion during New England’s 24-6 victory over the Carolina Panthers last Sunday. He rushed 15 times for 30 yards with a touchdown in that game.

Harris, 24, leads the team in carries (133), rushing yards (547) and rushing touchdowns (seven) this season.

The availability of rookie running back Rhamondre Stevenson is in question as he attempts to clear concussion protocol. Stevenson is second on the team in carries (35) and rushing yards (136).

Brandon Bolden, who has 22 carries for 108 yards this season, likely will see a larger workload as the Patriots (5-4) look to extend their winning streak to four games on Sunday versus the Browns (5-4).
