Richard Sherman (hamstring) to avoid IR

Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Richard Sherman will miss a couple of weeks but is expected to avoid being placed on injured reserve after injuring his hamstring last week.

An MRI confirmed the initial diagnosis. Sherman said on his podcast that it’s “nothing too serious” and that he expects to miss “at most a couple weeks.”

He recorded one tackle before exiting in the first quarter of the Buccaneers’ 28-22 win against the Eagles on Thursday night.

Sherman, 33, made his Bucs debut against the New England Patriots on Oct. 3. The five-time Pro Bowl selection has 11 tackles and one fumble recovery this season.

The Tampa Bay secondary has been hard hit by injuries this season, with each member of the starting unit missing time. Cornerbacks Sean Murphy-Bunting (dislocated elbow) and Carlton Davis III (quad) are on injured reserve.

The Bucs (5-1) host the Chicago Bears (3-3) in Week 7.

Bucs CB Richard Sherman (hamstring) could miss time

Veteran cornerback Richard Sherman, playing in only his third game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, suffered a hamstring injury Thursday night in Philadelphia that could keep him off the field for a while.

He recorded one tackle before exiting in the first quarter of the Buccaneers’ 28-22 win against the Eagles.

The NFL Network said Sherman will have an MRI on Friday and it “sounds like he’ll be out a couple weeks.”

Bucs’ Richard Sherman (hamstring) ruled out for rest of game

Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Richard Sherman departed Thursday night’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles in the first quarter due to a hamstring injury. The team ruled him out for the rest of the game.

Sherman was injured just past the midway point of the quarter on a play in which Philadelphia’s Quez Watkins caught a 23-yard pass. Sherman immediately signaled to the Tampa Bay sideline that he needed to be replaced.

Sherman’s injury comes with the Buccaneers already depleted in the secondary. Cornerbacks Carlton Davis (quadriceps) and Sean-Murphy Bunting (elbow) are on injured reserve and safety Antoine Winfield (concussion) is sidelined for the second straight game.

Sherman joined the Buccaneers two-plus weeks ago when Tampa Bay needed cornerback help and he started that Sunday night against the New England Patriots. He had 10 tackles and one fumble recovery in his first two games with the Buccaneers.

Sherman was credited with the tackle on the play in which he was injured against the Eagles. He touched the fallen Watkins after coming up lame.

Bucs CB Richard Sherman active for Patriots game

Newly acquired Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Richard Sherman will be active for Sunday night’s game against the New England Patriots, coach Bruce Arians said Friday.

Sherman, who signed Wednesday, will be dressed and available if needed amid injury woes in the secondary for the Buccaneers, Arians said.

Cornerback Jamel Dean is out with a knee injury he sustained last weekend in a loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The Bucs also are missing cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting, who is on injured reserve after dislocating his elbow in Week 1.

Running back Giovani Bernard also is out with a knee injury. Tight end Rob Gronkowski (ribs) and outside linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul (shoulder) will be gametime decisions for the Buccaneers (2-1) against the Patriots (1-2).

Since entering the NFL out of Stanford as a fifth-round pick in 2011, Sherman leads active NFL players with 36 interceptions.

The five-time Pro Bowler has played in 139 regular-season games with the Seahawks (2011-2017) and 49ers (2018-20). He has also played 15 playoff games.

Report: CB Richard Sherman makes visit to Tampa Bay

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are moving closer to signing free agent cornerback Richard Sherman, NFL Network reported Tuesday.

With a need to bolster their secondary, the Bucs will hold an in-person meeting with Sherman, per the report.

Coach Bruce Arians confirmed a week ago that Bucs general manager Jason Licht had been in contact with Sherman, who’s facing criminal charges and an NFL investigation.

Sherman’s former teams — the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers — also have had contact, and the Bucs could be looking to sign him on this visit. This is Sherman’s first free-agent visit.

Tampa Bay cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting dislocated his elbow in Week 1 and is on injured reserve. A key contributor, he had three interceptions in four postseason games on the Buccaneers’ run to the Super Bowl championship in February.

Sherman pleaded not guilty to five misdemeanor charges in mid-July following his arrest for allegedly attempting to break into his in-laws’ house. Sherman was charged with driving under the influence, resisting arrest, endangering roadway workers and two domestic violence counts — second-degree criminal trespass and third-degree malicious mischief.

Sherman, 33, has been in therapy since the incident, per NFL Network.

Sherman missed a career-high 11 games last season with the 49ers because of a calf injury. He recorded 18 tackles and one interception in five games before being released in February.

In the 2019 season, Sherman collected 61 tackles and three interceptions and defended 11 passes in 15 games while making his fifth Pro Bowl.

Sherman’s first seven seasons were spent with the NFC West rival Seahawks, with whom he made two Super Bowl appearances (winning one) and grabbed 32 interceptions. Sherman earned his three first-team All-Pro selections from 2012-14 as part of Seattle’s “Legion of Boom” defense.

The Buccaneers (2-1) will face the New England Patriots (1-2) on Sunday night in Tampa Bay quarterback Tom Brady’s highly anticipated return to Foxboro, Mass.

Bucs have reached out to Richard Sherman

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have reached out to free agent Richard Sherman in a play to shore up their defensive secondary.

Bucs coach Bruce Arians, responding to questions about an NFL Network report, confirmed Monday that Bucs general manager Jason Licht has been in contact with Sherman, who’s facing criminal charges and an NFL investigation.

“We’ve got to see,” Arians said. “Just a matter of I coach the ones we got and let (Licht) handle the rest of that. We’ll kick the tires on some other guys, too. … If it’s the right fit, we’ll move on it.”

Sherman’s former teams — the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers — also have reached out to the cornerback, per the report.

Tampa Bay cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting suffered an injury in Week 1.

Sherman pleaded not guilty to five misdemeanor charges in mid-July following his arrest for allegedly attempting to break into his in-laws’ house. Richard Sherman set for arraignment in domestic violence case

Free agent NFL cornerback Richard Sherman is scheduled to be arraigned Friday afternoon in connection with his arrest this week.

Prosecutors in King County, Wash., filed documents Friday charging the former All-Pro with driving under the influence, resisting arrest, endangering roadway workers and two domestic violence counts — second-degree criminal trespass and third-degree malicious mischief.

Sherman’s arraignment was set for 2 p.m. Pacific time.

The 33-year-old Sherman was arrested in Redmond, Wash., after attempting to break into his in-laws’ house early Wednesday. He was released Thursday without bail.

He issued a statement Friday before the hearing.

“I am deeply remorseful for my actions on Tuesday night,” Sherman said. “I behaved in a manner I am not proud of. I have been dealing with some personal challenges over the last several months, but that is not an excuse for how I acted. The importance of mental and emotional health is extremely real and I vow to get the help I need. I appreciate all of the people who have reached out in support of me and my family, including our community here in Seattle. I am grateful to have such an amazing wife, family and support system to lean on during this time.”

Authorities said Sherman crashed into a barrier in a construction zone, before the alleged attempted break-in. Sherman reportedly was upset that his children were taken from him.

Under the terms of his release, Sherman may not possess a weapon, use alcohol or nonprescription drugs, or have any contact with his father-in-law.

Details of the case have been sealed.

Sherman, unsigned for the upcoming NFL season, is a vice president on the NFL Player Association’s executive committee. And spent the past two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.

Sherman missed a career-high 11 games last season. The five-time Pro Bowl selection recorded 18 tackles and one interception in five games before being released in February.

In the previous season, Sherman collected 61 tackles, three interceptions and 11 passes defended in 15 games while making his fifth Pro Bowl.

Richard Sherman released, faces four non-felony charges

A King County (Wash.) District Court judge Thursday ordered the release of NFL star Richard Sherman, who faces four misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor charges, per the Seattle Times.

Sherman waived his first court appearance. Prosecutors asked for bail in the amount of $10,000 but Judge Fa’amomoi Masaniai released Sherman on his own recognizance.

“I see Mr. Sherman is a pillar in this community, he’s a business owner, he’s a husband, he’s a father,” Judge Masaniai said, per Audacy Sports. “I’m gonna release Mr. Sherman.”

In addition, Masaniai ruled that Sherman not have contact with his father-in-law.

Sherman will not face felony charges after initially being booked on domestic-violence burglary. Instead, Sherman faces charges of second degree criminal trespass, third degree malicious mischief, resisting arrest and driving under the influence of alcohol, per the Times.

Sherman was arrested in Redmond, Wash., early Wednesday morning after attempting to break into his in-laws’ house.

“My kids were not harmed in the incident. He’s a good person and this is not his character,” Ashley Moss, Sherman’s wife, told the Seattle Times. “I want people to know no one was injured.”

Seattle-based radio station KIRO-FM obtained audio of the 911 call Moss made before Sherman left his home overnight.

“I need officers to my house now,” Moss told the 911 operator. “My husband is drunk and threatened to kill himself.”

Sherman was located outside the home when police arrived and initially fought with police to the point that a K9 dog was deployed to help bring him into custody, police said.

Both Sherman and the responding officer sustained minor injuries as a result of the K9 deployment and ensuing altercation, and Sherman was taken to a local hospital before later booked into the King County Correctional Facility.

Sherman, a free agent, is a vice president on the NFL Player Association’s executive committee.

The Seattle Times reported the case “is sealed, so no other details were immediately available.”

The NFL Players Association released the following statement on Wednesday.

We will continue to monitor events closely as more facts are made available to us.”

Richard Sherman plans to play two more seasons

Coming off the most injury-riddled season of his 10-year NFL career, Richard Sherman admitted that he has his exit plan in mind.

In an ESPN interview Monday, the five-time Pro Bowl cornerback admitted he wants to play just two more seasons before eventually retiring.

Soon to be a free agent after playing his previous three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, Sherman shared his plan to step away after the 2022 season, when he would be 34.

“I only want to play two more (seasons),” Sherman said. “I want to get on a competitive team. I think I still have a lot to give to the game. I think I still have a lot that I want to accomplish and I think I can go out there and help a defense come together like it should and reach their potential, reach the heights that the defenses that I’ve played on have reached.”

Sherman, who turns 33 next month, missed a career-high 11 games due to calf problems that forced him to miss Weeks 2-10 in addition to the final two weeks of the regular season for the 49ers. In his five games, he recorded 18 tackles and one interception as the 6-10 Niners battled injury issues in a first-to-worst season following a Super Bowl appearance in 2019.

In that 2019 regular season, Sherman recorded 61 tackles, three interceptions and 11 passes defensed in 15 games while making his fifth Pro Bowl.

In December, Sherman said he hoped to return to San Francisco, where he has played since 2018, but doubted the team could fit him under its salary cap — which currently projects to have just under $14 million, according to OverTheCap.com. The 2021 salary cap has not yet been officially set.

Sherman’s first seven seasons were spent with the rival Seattle Seahawks, with whom he made two Super Bowl appearances (winning one) and grabbed 32 interceptions. Sherman also earned three first-team All-Pro selections from 2012-14 as part of Seattle’s “Legion of Boom” defense.

In his 10 seasons, Sherman has amassed 484 tackles, 36 interceptions and 115 passes defensed in 139 games (133 starts).
