Trevor Siemian in, Zach Wilson (concussion) out for Jets

The New York Jets will turn to Trevor Siemian as the starting quarterback on Sunday against the Washington Commanders with Zach Wilson still in concussion protocol.

Head coach Robert Saleh said Friday that Brett Rypien will back up Siemian. Aaron Rodgers, newly activated from injured reserve, will not serve as the No. 3 quarterback, Saleh said.

Siemian, 31, has appeared in two games in relief this season. He replaced Wilson in last Sunday’s 30-0 loss at Miami, completing 14 of 26 passes for 110 yards with two interceptions.

He also played Dec. 3 in a 13-8 loss to Atlanta and was 5-of-13 passing for 66 yards.

Siemian has appeared in 37 career games and is 13-17 as a starter for four teams. He has thrown for 7,203 yards with a 58.5 percent completion rate, throwing 42 touchdown passes and 30 interceptions.

The Jets (5-9) have been eliminated from playoff contention. After Sunday’s game in East Rutherford, N.J., they close the season on the road against the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots.

Jets activate QB Aaron Rodgers for practice, insist he won’t play

The New York Jets activated quarterback Aaron Rodgers from injured reserve in a procedural move with no intention of putting him on the field for another game this season.

The Jets want Rodgers to continue practicing with the team but insist he’s not an option to replace Zach Wilson (concussion) for the Christmas Eve game with the Washington Commanders.

Rodgers, 40, held out hope he’d be able to return this month from the torn Achilles he suffered in the opening week of the season, but with the Jets eliminated from playoff contention, head coach Robert Saleh put an end to that speculation on Wednesday.

“We’re still going to keep him on the active. … It’s all part of his rehab,” Saleh said about the four-time league Most Valuable Player. “Just having him on the football field is a plus for everybody. It’s a plus for him, it’s a plus for his teammates.”

Rodgers said this week on the “Pat McAfee Show” that he’s not physically ready to play. An Achilles tear and surgery typically brings a recovery and rehab period of between 10 and 12 months.

Saleh said the Jets had the “roster flexibility with all the different things that have happened to us the last couple of weeks” to make the move.

Rodgers returned to practice on Nov. 29, opening the 21-day window to either return to the active roster or be placed on season-ending injured reserve.

The Jets are shorthanded when it comes to quarterbacks. Wilson is in the NFL’s concussion protocol. If he can’t play against the Commanders (4-10), the Jets (5-9) likely will turn to veteran backup Trevor Siemian.

Jets’ Robert Saleh: Aaron Rodgers will play if he wants to

If Aaron Rodgers receives medical clearance and wants to play this season, New York Jets coach Robert Saleh said the four-time NFL MVP will take the field.

“Aaron’s a big boy, a grown man, and no one’s going to know Aaron’s body like Aaron knows his body,” Saleh said Wednesday. “And if he feels after all the doctors clear him — I’m sure there’s a million of them, I have no idea — but if Aaron says he wants to play, he’s going to play.”

Rodgers, who turns 40 on Dec. 2, is attempting to come back from a ruptured Achillies and is targeting a mid-December return.

“We’ve got to be in the mix, and I’ve got to be healthy, and I definitely still want to come back,” Rodgers said Tuesday on ESPN.

Part of his decision will depend on whether the Jets (4-5) can stay in the playoff hunt. On a two-game losing streak, the Jets play a pair of rivals ahead of them in the AFC East, the Buffalo Bills (5-5) on Sunday and Miami Dolphins (6-3) on the day after Thanksgiving.

Rodgers has been rehabbing in Los Angeles and flying to attend Jets games. He said he’s planning to fully rejoin the team next week.

“I would imagine he’s going to want to acclimate to the meetings and reconnect himself,” Saleh said. “There’s been a lot of changes to the system since he’s been out, and just trying to figure things out with the guys that we have.

“I have an admiration for him. We’re very young on the offensive side of the ball and his veteran presence is always welcome. [He’ll be able to] just get himself back in the building, get reacclimated around his teammates, re-involved in meetings. Then whenever his clock starts, it starts — if he’s able.”

If cleared to resume practicing, Rogers will have 21 days to be activated. If the Jets don’t activate him, he will remain on injured reserve for the rest of the season.

Robert Saleh on playing Aaron Rodgers: ‘Can’t coach scared’

New York Jets coach Robert Saleh has no qualms about playing veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the team’s final preseason game.

“You can’t coach scared, you can’t play scared,” Saleh said Tuesday about his plans for Saturday’s game against the New York Giants in East Rutherford, N.J.

“You can slip out of your car and have something happen to you. Knock on wood, it will be fine. It’s not uncommon (to play first-string players in the preseason), you can always play the hindsight, fearful game. It’s in the best interest of our team to go out together and prepare for the season.

Rodgers, 39, hasn’t played in a preseason game since 2018 — and that includes the Jets’ three contests this month. The four-time NFL MVP said early in training camp that he would play this summer if that was in line with what Saleh wanted.

“I wouldn’t mind playing in the preseason,” Rodgers said at the time, per the New York Post. “I wouldn’t mind if Robert said, ‘Hey, we are going to go. Let’s do it.’ Most coaches have that fear where they want to get you to Week 1 and not risk it, but I believe there is a chance for the last one.”

Saleh made it clear on Tuesday that he wanted Rodgers to get his feet wet before the season opener.

“For us as an organization, he’s new, though he’s been in the league a long time,” Saleh told reporters. “We didn’t want Sept. 11 (the regular-season opener against the visiting Buffalo Bills) to be the first time he stepped into MetLife. Giants-Jets, whether in the preseason or regular season, we expect a good turnout and anticipation in the building. We didn’t want his first time in new team colors, with new teammates and in a new stadium to be on Sept. 11 for the first time.”

Rodgers enters his 19th NFL season with 59,055 career yards, 475 touchdown passes and a 147-75-1 record as a starter.

Jets coach: ‘Shocked’ if Aaron Rodgers doesn’t play in 2024

New York Jets coach Robert Saleh said Friday that he expects Aaron Rodgers to remain with the team beyond this season. In fact, Saleh said he’d be “shocked” if he didn’t.

“I don’t want to back him into a corner and make him commit to something (long term),” Saleh said Friday after practice. “I just want him to have fun and know that when he walks in this building to let loose and have a little bit of fun, (chat) with the guys, come in the office, come talk to us and just enjoy playing football.

“Odds are, if you enjoy playing football, you’re going to want to keep doing it. I wouldn’t put pressure on him to commit to something like that anyway, but I’d be shocked if he doesn’t play multiple years. He looks like a little kid out there.”

Rodgers, who will turn 40 in December, perhaps showed his hand when talking on 98.7 FM ESPN New York prior to Friday’s practice.

“I’m not a big cliche guy,” the four-time NFL MVP said. “Most people would say, ‘I’m just taking this one day at a time or one year at a time.’ But the Jets gave up a lot for me, so to just play one year I think would be a disservice. Now, if that one year turns out to be a magical year, who knows? But more than that, it’s how my body feels.”

To acquire Rodgers, the Jets swapped first-round picks with the Green Bay Packers in the 2023 NFL Draft. They also sent a second- and sixth-round pick in that draft and a conditional 2024 selection (second round; first if Rodgers plays 65 percent of the snaps this season). The Packers also sent New York a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft to complete the deal.

Jets’ Robert Saleh calls talk of Aaron Rodgers’ wish list ‘tired’ narrative

Calling it a “silly” and “tired” narrative, New York Jets coach Robert Saleh is trying to discourage talk of the franchise trying to fulfill a “wish list” of new quarterback Aaron Rodgers by signing some of his former teammates.

Speaking as the Jets began rookie minicamp on Friday in Florham Park, N.J., Saleh called it “very common for new faces to want old faces to come in and help accelerate the installation of an entire program. Everything is pinned on the quarterback. It’s not just him.”

As the Jets worked to acquire Rodgers, a four-time NFL Most Valuable Player who led the Packers to a Super Bowl victory in 2011, they have also picked up four players from his past, all on offense. The list includes receivers Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb, tackle Billy Turner and quarterback Tim Boyle.

Talk of Rodgers having a preferred list of teammates began with a report two months ago when he acknowledged discussing his favorite players with Jets executives.

That doesn’t mean these player additions are just for Rodgers, however, according to Saleh, who specifically mentioned offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.

“Hackett has something to say about it. He loves Lazard. He loves Randall. He took Billy Turner with him to Denver, and he wanted him here. Of course, you’re going to surround a coach with people who he feels like will plant the flag,” Saleh said.

“That whole narrative — what people are trying to put on the quarterback — it’s tired. It’s common practice in the NFL.”

New York started 6-3 last season before going 1-7 the rest of the way to finish 7-10 and last in the AFC East.

Jets coach ‘confident’ team will acquire Aaron Rodgers

New York Jets coach Robert Saleh said he believes four-time Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers will be his quarterback in 2023.

While Rodgers has said he wants to play for the Jets in the upcoming season, the team and Green Bay Packers have yet to come to trade terms. Saleh told reporters Monday at the league owners meeting in Phoenix that he is “confident” a trade will happen.

“I’m not hitting the panic button,” said Saleh, who didn’t state Rodgers’ name because of league tampering rules but made it clear who he was talking about.

He added: “I’m confident that things are going to work out. You guys know me. I’m a very positive person and optimistic, so I’m confident that things will go the way we’re hoping. But at the same time, it’s not going to eat at me.”

Saleh also said he’d like to pair free agent receiver Odell Beckham Jr. with the future Hall of Fame quarterback.

ESPN reported Monday that the Packers want compensation for Rodgers that includes the Jets’ first-round draft pick, No. 13 overall, but the Jets are balking at the request.

While it would be beneficial for Rodgers and the Jets for him to be on board when the offseason program begins in mid-April, Saleh implied he isn’t in a hurry because of Rodgers’ familiarity with offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, who held that job in Green Bay for three seasons.

“If there’s a great rapport with the coordinator, there’s really no urgency,” Saleh said. “The quarterback, if he understands the system, if the quarterback knows it, it’s just a matter of just refining skills and doing all that stuff. So, there’s no hurry.”

Speaking of Beckham, Saleh said the Jets are intrigued by the 30-year-old veteran.

“He’s been a fantastic receiver in this league,” Saleh said. “Everything you hear about him, he’s a phenomenal person. That’s something you’re always going to look over, turn over every stone, cross your Ts, dot your Is, just make sure you’re, you’re not missing an opportunity to add a great player. And there’s no guarantee anything will happen.”

Jets’ Robert Saleh: Aaron Rodgers’ interest ‘pretty cool’

Jets coach Robert Saleh called quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ interest in playing for New York “pretty cool” during an interview Sunday with NFL Network.

“Two years ago when we first got here, just thinking about where we were and how far we’ve come,” Saleh said. “To have a guy like him want to play for us is pretty cool and shows how far we’ve come. But we still have a long way to go and a lot of work to do.”

Some of that work includes officially acquiring Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers.

Earlier this month, the four-time NFL MVP said he intended to play for the Jets in 2023.

“The Packers would like to move on. They’ve let me know that in so many words, they’ve let other people know that in direct words,” Rodgers said during a March 15 appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

“And because I still have that fire and I want to play, I’d like to play in New York. It’s just a matter of getting that done at this point.”

Rodgers, 39, signed a three-year, $150.815 million contract extension in March 2022. He is set to make $59.5 million in 2023.

Rodgers was named league MVP in 2011, 2014, 2020 and 2021, but is coming off one of the worst seasons of his career in 2022. He completed 64.6 percent of his passes for 3,695 yards, 26 touchdowns and 12 interceptions as the Packers (8-9) missed the playoffs.

There are familiar faces waiting for him in New York. The Jets signed former Packers receiver Allen Lazard to a reported four-year, $44 million deal earlier this month, and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett held the same position in Green Bay from 2019-21.

Jets elevate Zach Wilson to No. 2 QB against Lions

The New York Jets are elevating Zach Wilson to the No. 2 quarterback for Sunday’s home game against the Detroit Lions.

Wilson, the No. 2 overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, started seven games after his return from injury in Week 4. But he struggled and was dropped to the No. 3 spot, behind Mike White and veteran Joe Flacco.

He has been inactive the past three games, with coach Robert Saleh deciding that watching from the sidelines could help Wilson.

Saleh told reporters on Wednesday that Wilson has earned the chance.

“Zach’s been doing a great job,” Saleh said. “He has been deliberate in his approach over the last three weeks. He’s been holding himself accountable with regards to how he wants that to attack practice, how he’s been performing in practice, going against our defense — which I think is a pretty good defense to go against –and working on all the different things that we’ve been asking him to accomplish.”

The move is significant for Wilson, given White sustained a rib injury in last week’s 20-12 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Saleh said White would be limited in practice on Wednesday.

In brief relief of White against the Bills, Flacco completed one of three pass attempts for just one yard. He was sacked once for a six-yard loss.

On the season, Wilson is 5-2 in his seven starts. He has completed 55.6 percent of his passes for 1,279 yards, with four touchdown passes and five interceptions.

The Jets are 1-2 with White as the starter following the loss to the Bills and 27-22 defeat against the Minnesota Vikings. In his three starts, White has thrown for 952 yards, with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Jets coach Robert Saleh clears COVID protocols

New York Jets coach Robert Saleh returned to work Wednesday after clearing COVID-19 protocols.

“It’s like the first day of school,” Saleh told reporters. “I’m ready to go another 18 weeks.”

Saleh, 42, tested positive on Dec. 22 and missed the Jets’ 26-21 defeat of the Jacksonville Jaguars last Sunday.

The first-year head coach wasn’t alone in rejoining New York (4-11) as it prepares for Sunday’s visit from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (11-4).

Saleh said quarterback Joe Flacco, tight end Kenny Yeboah, cornerbacks Michael Carter II and Lamar Jackson, linebackers Noah Dawkins and Hamsah Nasirildeen and defensive lineman Folorunso Fatukasi have also cleared the league’s health and safety protocols.

Several other players could also return soon from the COVID list, Saleh said. That includes wideout Vyncint Smith, safety Ashtyn Davis, offensive linemen Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and Alijah Vera-Tucker, and defensive linemen John Franklin-Myers and Hamilcar Rashed.
