Cowboys sign RB Royce Freeman

The Dallas Cowboys added depth to their backfield by signing running back Royce Freeman to a contract on Wednesday.

Terms were not disclosed but multiple media outlets reported it was a one-year contract for Freeman, 28.

Dallas needed help at the position after seeing last season’s leading rusher Tony Pollard depart in free agency.

Freeman, a six-year veteran, becomes the most experienced running back on the roster for the Cowboys, who also have Rico Dowdle, Deuce Vaughn, Malik Davis, Snoop Conner and Hunter Luepke.

Freeman ran for 319 yards and two touchdowns in 14 games off the bench last season with the Los Angeles Rams. The 2018 third-round pick has rushed for 1,792 yards with 10 TDs in 79 career games (nine starts) with the Denver Broncos (2018-20), Carolina Panthers (2021), Houston Texans (2021-22) and Rams (2023).

Rams add RB Royce Freeman to roster

The Los Angeles Rams signed Royce Freeman to the active roster and fellow running back Darrell Henderson to the practice squad on Tuesday.

Per reports, running backs Kyren Williams and Ronnie Rivers are expected to sit out Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers due to their respective injuries.

Both Williams and Rivers underwent MRIs on Monday. Williams’ exam revealed an ankle sprain that is not considered a long-term injury, while Rivers is believed to have a strained PCL that will sideline him for a few weeks, NFL Network reported.

Freeman, 27, has played solely on special teams during three games with Los Angeles this season. He has rushed for 1,473 yards with eight touchdowns in 68 career games (nine starts) with the Denver Broncos, Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans and Rams.

Henderson, 26, was drafted in the third round by the Rams out of Memphis in 2019. He has 1,742 career rushing yards with 13 touchdowns and 66 catches for 474 yards and four scores in 50 games (28 starts) for Los Angeles.

Williams sustained his injury during the fourth quarter of the Rams’ 26-9 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

Williams rushed for 158 yards against the Cardinals, the most by a Rams running back since December 2020. Zach Evans filled in when Williams went down, rushing four times for 10 yards.

Williams, 23, has 456 yards rushing and six touchdowns in six games (five starts) this season. He has 13 receptions for 105 yards and one score.

Rivers left the game in the third quarter after rushing for 9 yards on three carries.

Rivers, 24, has rushed for 57 yards and has four catches for 18 yards in six games this season.

Broncos waive RB Royce Freeman

The Denver Broncos released their former starting running back Royce Freeman on Wednesday after making two waiver claims earlier in the day.

Freeman started eight games as a rookie after the Broncos selected him in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

The Broncos also waived defensive lineman Jonathan Harris after claiming defensive back Mike Ford and running back Nate McCrary off waivers.

Freeman ran for 521 yards and five touchdowns in eight starts in 2018 but then bounced down the depth chart with the emergence of Phillip Lindsay and the acquisition of Melvin Gordon last season.

Lindsay is gone but the Broncos signed Mike Boone in the offseason and traded up to select Javonte Williams in this year’s NFL draft.

Freeman, 25, rushed for 1,187 yards and eight TDs in 46 games in Denver.
