Reports: Bucs WR Russell Gage suffers serious knee injury

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Russell Gage was carted off the practice field with a knee injury Wednesday.

NFL Network said the non-contact injury, sustained while he was backpedaling during a joint practice with the New York Jets, is potentially season-ending.

Gage, 27, was said to be emotional and in tears as he was leaving the field, with teammates taking a knee around him in Florham Park, N.J.

Gage caught 51 passes for 426 yards and a career-high five touchdowns in 13 games (four starts) in his first season with the Buccaneers in 2022.

He has 244 receptions for 2,491 yards and 14 scores in 74 games (25 starts) with the Bucs and Atlanta Falcons, who drafted him in the sixth round in 2018.

Gage is listed as a starter on the Tampa Bay depth chart, along with Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. His absence would give more playing time to Trey Palmer, Deven Thompkins and David Moore, among other wide receivers on the roster.

Buccaneers WR Russell Gage moving extremities, still hospitalized

Buccaneers wide receiver Russell Gage remains hospitalized with head and neck injuries sustained Monday night in Tampa Bay’s playoff loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

The team said Tuesday morning that Gage, 26, sustained a concussion and neck injury that required further testing.

“Russell was taken to a local hospital where he remained overnight for additional testing and observation. Russell has had movement in all extremities and will continue to undergo additional testing today. We will provide additional information as it becomes available,” the Buccaneers said in a release.

Gage was carted off the field at Raymond James Stadium on a backboard with 2:55 left in the host Buccaneers’ NFC wild-card game.

After going after a pass from Tom Brady that fell incomplete, Gage was unable to stand on his feet on multiple occasions. Cowboys safety Donovan Wilson’s right arm smacked into the side of Gage’s helmet.

Gage departed the Buccaneers’ regular-season finale against the Atlanta Falcons on Jan. 8 with a lower-back injury.

The LSU product caught two passes for 10 yards in Monday’s game. Gage had 51 catches for 426 yards and five touchdowns in the 2022 regular season, his first year in Tampa Bay after he opened his NFL career by playing four seasons for the Falcons.

In 74 career regular-season games (25 starts), Gage has 244 receptions for 2,491 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Bucs WRs Mike Evans, Russell Gage to sit out practice this week

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receivers Mike Evans and Russell Gage will not practice with the team during its joint session this week with the Tennessee Titans, coach Todd Bowles said Tuesday.

Evans exited practice earlier this month with a hamstring injury, while Gage has been sidelined for the past week with his own hamstring ailment. Both players sat out the Buccaneers’ 26-24 preseason loss to the Miami Dolphins on Saturday.

The Bucs are bringing Chris Godwin along slowly as he returns from surgery to repair a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee. Offseason addition Julio Jones will join Scotty Miller, Tyler Johnson, Cyril Grayson Jr. and Jaelon Darden in being featured in practice in the absence of Evans and Gage. Veteran Breshad Perriman also has a hamstring injury and missed practice Monday.

Also, Tampa Bay released defensive back Ross Cockrell along with five other players to trim its roster to the NFL-mandated limit of 85.

Cockrell was joined by wide receiver Kameron Brown, offensive lineman Curtis Blackwell and tight end Ben Beise.

Offensive lineman Jonathan Hubbard and linebacker JoJo Ozougwu were waived/injured, which means they automatically revert to the Buccaneers’ injured reserve list if they are not claimed off waivers by another NFL team.

Falcons WR Russell Gage (ankle) is week-to-week

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Russell Gage is week-to-week with an ankle injury.

Falcons head coach Arthur Smith said Wednesday Gage will be very limited this week and has a small chance of playing in Week 3 against the New York Giants (0-2).

Starting cornerback A.J. Terrell’s status this Sunday also is in doubt with a concussion. He left last Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay.

Gage was held without a catch in Week 1 and hauled in five passes for 28 yards last week.

Terrell has nine tackles and two passes defensed in two starts.

The Falcons are 0-2.

Falcons WRs Jones, Ridley questionable vs. Packers

Atlanta Falcons wide receivers Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley are listed as questionable to play in Monday’s game against the undefeated Green Bay Packers.

Jones, 31, aggravated his ailing hamstring in Atlanta’s 40-39 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 20. He sat out last Sunday’s 30-26 setback to the Chicago Bears with the injury.

Jones recorded 11 catches for 181 yards through the first two games without a touchdown grab. The seven-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time first-team All-Pro has 12,306 yards receiving and 57 touchdowns for his career.

Ridley, who had five catches for 110 yards versus the Bears, is dealing with an ankle injury.

The 25-year-old Ridley has 21 receptions for 349 yards and four touchdowns in three games this season. He has 148 catches for 2,036 yards and 21 touchdowns in 32 career games with the Falcons.

Wide receiver Russell Gage likely will see an additional workload should Jones and/or Ridley be unable to play on Sunday.

Gage, 24, has 17 receptions for 186 yards and a touchdown this season.

The Falcons (0-3) have ruled out kicker Younghoe Koo (right groin), safety Keanu Neal (hamstring), safety Ricardo Allen (elbow) and defensive end Takk McKinley (groin).
