Indianapolis Colts center Ryan Kelly (78) looks out on the field during warmups Sunday, Sept. 12, 2021, before the regular season opener against the Seattle Seahawks at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Colts C Ryan Kelly (personal) out vs. Patriots

Indianapolis Colts center Ryan Kelly has been downgraded from questionable to out for Saturday’s game against the visiting New England Patriots due to a personal matter.

Kelly was activated off the reserve/COVID-19 list on Tuesday and returned to practice in a limited fashion the following day. He did not practice on Thursday, however, due to a personal matter.

Kelly, 28, was the Colts’ first-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. The two-time Pro Bowl selection has started all 78 games in his career, including 12 this season.

Second-year lineman Danny Pinter is expected to play Saturday in the absence of Kelly.

Colts activate S Khari Willis, put C Ryan Kelly on COVID list

The Indianapolis Colts activated starting safety Khari Willis from injured reserve and placed center Ryan Kelly on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Saturday.

In addition, Indianapolis waived safety Josh Jones.

Willis went on injured reserve with a calf injury after the Week 8 loss to the Tennessee Titans. His absence meant the Colts played the past month without both of their starting safeties. Julian Blackmon has a torn Achilles and is out for the season.

Willis, 25, has played in seven games (six starts) this season with 38 tackles, 1.5 sacks, three passes defensed, two interceptions and a fumble recovery. In three seasons, with the Colts, he’s appeared in 35 games (29 starts).

Kelly, 28, was the Colts’ first-round pick in the 2016 draft. The two-time Pro Bowl selection has started all 78 games in his career, including 12 this season.

Jones, 27, has split time between the practice squad and active roster this season, appearing in six games with five tackles. A second-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2017, he’s also played for Dallas Cowboys (2019) and Jacksonville Jaguars (2020).

The Colts (6-6) play the Texans (2-9) in Houston on Sunday.

Colts say Carson Wentz to return to practice Monday

Indianapolis Colts coach Frank Reich said Sunday that quarterback Carson Wentz, guard Quenton Nelson and center Ryan Kelly will return to practice Monday on a limited basis after each sustained injuries earlier in training camp.

Wentz needed surgery on his left foot in early August and initially was given a return timetable of five to 12 weeks.

“You’re going to see him out there on the practice field this week,” Reich said. “He’ll be out there tomorrow taking some things … It’ll be limited. He’ll be limited but he will be participating, as will (Ryan) Kelly and as will Quenton Nelson.”

Reich previously told reporters that Wentz had a previous foot injury dating back to high school. A broken bone loosened and caused pain for Wentz, and the surgery was planned to remove that bone entirely.

The Colts acquired Wentz from the Philadelphia Eagles in March for a 2021 third-round draft pick and a conditional 2022 second-rounder. Wentz, who struggled mightily in 2020, previously played for Reich when Reich was Philadelphia’s offensive coordinator.

Jacob Eason has taken first-team snaps for Indianapolis, including during preseason games. Rookie Sam Ehlinger also has been in the mix.

Nelson, considered one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL, also required foot surgery at the start of the month. The No. 6 overall pick of the 2018 draft has been a first-team All-Pro and a Pro Bowler in all three seasons of his career to date.

Kelly sustained an elbow injury in a practice in late July. A first-round pick in 2016, Kelly was made the highest-paid center in the NFL with a contract extension last September and went on to earn a second-team All-Pro selection in 2020.

The Colts will host the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 12 for their season opener.
