Saints RT Ryan Ramczyk, 30, retires after knee injury

New Orleans Saints right tackle Ryan Ramczyk announced his retirement on social media Thursday night.

Ramczyk, 30, started 101 games over seven seasons before sitting out the 2024 campaign with a chronic knee injury.

The 2017 first-round pick made three straight All-Pro teams from 2018-20, with a first-team nod in 2019.

“What an incredible journey it’s been,” Ramczyk wrote on his Instagram account. “My path to the NFL wasn’t a straight line, it wasn’t the story most people expect. There were moments when people doubted me, moments when I doubted myself. It’s funny how life works out. Sometimes the road less traveled leads to places you never expected, but it ends up being exactly where you were meant to be.”

Ramczyk played his final game on Dec. 10, 2023, before finishing that season on injured reserve with a cartilage defect in his right knee.

The NFL announced Thursday that Ramczyk will be in Green Bay on April 25 to announce the Saints’ Day 2 draft picks.

Saints OT Ryan Ramczyk’s knee slow in recovery from surgery

The right knee of New Orleans Saints right tackle Ryan Ramczyk has not responded as well as hoped following offseason surgery, coach Dennis Allen said Tuesday.

Ramczyk, 29, could miss the 2024 season in his recovery from cartilage damage, NFL Network reported Tuesday, but Allen was being a bit more conservative in his assessment in taking a wait-and-see approach in the offseason and into training camp.

“He just isn’t quite where I was probably hoping he’d be, and really quite frankly, where he was hoping he’d be,” Allen told reporters at the NFL’s annual league meeting in Orlando, Fla. “But … there’s a long time before we kick the ball off, so I wouldn’t jump to any conclusions right now, but we’ll see how it goes over the next three, four, five, six months, whatever that is, before we get to the beginning of the season.”

Allen said he felt better about Ramczyk’s medical situation at the time of the procedure than he did Tuesday. For his part, Ramczyk said in December that he was uncertain about his future and would consult with medical professionals and make the best decision.

He described the damage to the knee then as a “nagging problem,” saying there wasn’t much cartilage remaining.

“This year it’s bugged me a little bit more than it has in the past,” he said at the time. “At some point, I just couldn’t play anymore.”

Ramczyk played in 12 games (all starts) in 2023. He played in at least 15 regular-season games in five of his first six seasons, all with the Saints, who selected him in the first round (32nd overall) in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Wisconsin.

He was first-team All-Pro in 2019 and second team in 2018 and 2020.

Ramczyk signed a five-year, $96 million contract extension in June 2021 but had no guaranteed money remaining on it. He and the team renegotiated a deal that gives him $6.5 million in guaranteed money this season between base salary and bonuses. providing the team salary cap relief.

Saints WR Chris Olave (ankle) to play vs. Rams

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Chris Olave will be active and play in Thursday’s game against the host Los Angeles Rams, coach Dennis Allen announced.

Allen said Wednesday that Olave is “good to go” versus the Rams. The news came three days after the wideout sat out his first game of the season in New Orleans’ 24-6 victory over the New York Giants due to an ankle injury.

Olave sustained the injury during the Saints’ 28-6 win over the Carolina Panthers on Dec. 10.

Olave, 23, leads the team in receptions (72) and receiving yards (918). He is tied for the lead in touchdown receptions (four).

Right tackle Ryan Ramczyk, however, will sit out a second straight game due to a knee injury. Landon Young likely will start in his place for the Saints (7-7).

Saints rule out both starting OTs, backup for ‘TNF’

The New Orleans Saints ruled out starting offensive tackles Ryan Ramczyk (concussion) and James Hurst (ankle) along with backup tackle Landon Young (hip) for Thursday night’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Trevor Penning is expected to draw the start at one of the tackle spots. Penning started the first five games of the season, playing 100 percent of the snaps. He was benched ahead of last week’s loss to the Houston Texans but played 78 percent of the snaps.

The Saints also ruled out tight end Juwan Johnson (calf) and safety J.T. Gray (hamstring). Linebacker Demario Davis (knee) is questionable and a game-time decision. Also questionable are starting safety Tyrann Mathieu (foot), running back Jamaal Williams (hamstring) and safety Lonnie Johnson (hamstring).

Guard Andrus Peat (groin), however, is listed without a game status after being limited in practice this week.

Ramczyk, 29, has started all 95 games he’s played in since being selected No. 32 overall by the Saints in the 2017 draft.

Hurst, 31, started all six games this season, his fourth in New Orleans.

Young, 26, has played in four games this season but was inactive in Week 5 and didn’t play last week.

The Saints (3-3) host the Jaguars (4-2) to kick off Week 7.

Saints RT Ryan Ramczyk recovering from knee surgery

New Orleans Saints All-Pro right tackle Ryan Ramczyk is recovering from surgery for a knee injury that limited him to just 10 games in 2021, NFL Network reported Wednesday.

The procedure, aimed at cleaning out the knee, was considered minor.

Ramczyk, 27, had missed only one game in four prior seasons. He earned All-Pro honors in 2019 and was second team All-Pro in 2018 and 2020.

The Saints selected Ramczyk No. 32 overall in the 2017 draft out of Wisconsin. He signed a five-year, $96 million contract extension in June.

Reports: Saints sign All-Pro RT Ryan Ramczyk to $96M extension

The New Orleans Saints and Ryan Ramczyk have agreed to a five-year, $96 million extension, making the All-Pro the highest-paid right tackle in football, ESPN and NFL Network reported Wednesday.

The deal includes $60 million in guaranteed money, per the reports.

Ramczyk, 27, has played in — and started — every game but one since the Saints selected him with the 32nd overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. The Saints pulled their starters for the 2018 season finale, accounting for the only game Ramczyk has missed.

He made first team All-Pro after the 2019 season and second team in 2018 and 2020.

Ramczyk’s total contract value eclipses the previous high of $72 million earned by Philadelphia Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson, per Spotrac.
