Raiders ride with QB Gardner Minshew despite offensive changes

Luke Getsy is gone and Scott and Norv Turner arrived during the Las Vegas Raiders’ bye week as part of head coach Antonio Pierce’s attempt to repair a broken offense.

But Pierce said Wednesday that he and the Turners agree quarterback Gardner Minshew remains the starter as the Raiders (2-7) return to the field and prepare to visit the Miami Dolphins (4-6) on Sunday.

“When we brought in Gardner, we expected, obviously, the player we’d seen in the past,” Pierce said Wednesday. “At some point, you’ve got to give the guy confidence. There have been times with turnovers and other things that have taken place we made a decision to put him on the bench and go with another quarterback. This week I feel like Gardner gives us the best opportunity to move forward. He has every opportunity to go out there and help us.”

Pierce said he consulted his new offensive coaching staff and reminded Minshew “everybody around him” believes he can get the job done, and that he just needs to “cut it loose.”

Scott Turner is expected to call plays this week for the Raiders, who are tied with the Tennessee Titans for the AFC’s worst scoring margin at minus-83 points. Norv Turner joined the staff as a senior adviser.

Minshew, 28, has six touchdowns, eight interceptions and five lost fumbles in eight games (seven starts) this year.

A bye week provided a break for the new offensive staff to convene and paused a five-game losing streak.

Las Vegas is coming off a 41-24 loss at Cincinnati in Week 9. Minshew started and completed only 10 passes for 124 yards before the Raiders turned to Desmond Ridder late in the third quarter. Ridder completed 11 of 16 passes for 74 yards with a touchdown to rookie tight end Brock Bowers and was also sacked four times.

“What do we have to lose at this point?” Pierce asked rhetorically Wednesday. “We’re 2-7. Everything that’s behind us is behind us.”

Report: Raiders hiring Norv Turner as assistant

The Las Vegas Raiders are hiring Norv Turner as an assistant, NFL Network reported Tuesday.

He is joining the Raiders as his son, Scott, reportedly is in the mix to be calling the offensive plays when the team returns from its bye week. Scott Turner serves as the Raiders’ passing-game coordinator under head coach Antonio Pierce.

The report comes on the heels of Las Vegas firing offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, offensive line coach James Cregg and quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello late Sunday night. All three were in their first season with the Raiders.

Norv Turner, 72, is rejoining the franchise after posting a 9-23 record as its head coach in 2004 and 2005 while the team was based in Oakland. He also served as a head coach in Washington (1994-2000) and the then-San Diego Chargers from 2007-12 and has an overall 49-59-1 record.

He last was on an NFL staff in 2019 as a special assistant and offensive coordinator with the Carolina Panthers under head coach Ron Rivera.

Reports: Raiders hire Scott Turner as passing-game assistant

The Las Vegas Raiders have hired Scott Turner as an assistant coach in charge of the passing game, several reports said Friday.

Turner, 40, spent the past three seasons as the Washington Commanders’ offensive coordinator before his dismissal Jan. 10.

Turner’s father, longtime NFL coach Norv Turner, spent two seasons as the head coach of the then-Oakland Raiders in 2004-05. Scott Turner also attended college in Las Vegas at UNLV, where he was a backup quarterback.

In Las Vegas, it’s unclear who Turner’s starting quarterback will be, as the Raiders are widely believed to be ready to move on from veteran Derek Carr via trade or release.

Josh McDaniels is returning for a second season as the Raiders’ head coach, alongside offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi. Las Vegas went 6-11 in 2022.

The Commanders’ offense in 2022 ranked 20th in total yardage (330.3 yards per game) and 24th in scoring (18.9 points per game) under Turner.

Commanders fire offensive coordinator Scott Turner

The Washington Commanders fired Scott Turner on Tuesday after three seasons as the team’s offensive coordinator.

Turner, 40, reunited with head coach Ron Rivera in Washington in 2020 after the former spent two seasons as the Carolina Panthers’ quarterbacks coach.

While with the Commanders, Turner dealt with eight different starting quarterbacks under center.

“I met with Coach Turner today and informed him that we will be moving in another direction going forward with the offensive coordinator position,” Rivera said in a statement. “Unfortunately, we did not live up to the expectations and standard that I expected to see from our offensive unit. I felt it was best for a fresh start at the coordinator position heading into next year.

“I have a tremendous amount of respect for Scott and thanked him for his three years of service to our organization. I wish Scott and his family all the best in the future.”

Washington (8-8-1) posted a 1-3-1 record over its final five games of the season to fall out of playoff contention. The Commanders ranked 24th in the NFL in average points per game (18.9), 21st in passing yards (204.2) and 20th in total yards (330.3).

Washington finished 29th in the league in 2020 and 21st in 2021 in terms of total offense.

Turner is the son of former Washington coach Norv Turner.
