Report: Colts releasing RB Deon Jackson

The Indianapolis Colts are releasing Week 1 starter Deon Jackson and signing fellow running back Trey Sermon from the practice squad, NFL Network reported Saturday.

Jackson rushed for just 14 yards on 13 carries and gained only 14 yards on five receptions in the season-opening 31-21 loss to Jacksonville on Sept. 10.

Zack Moss got the start in Week 2 at Houston and gained 107 yards from scrimmage on 22 touches and scored on an 11-yard run in the Colts’ 31-20 victory.

With 2021 NFL rushing champion Jonathan Taylor still on the physically unable to perform list, Moss will remain the RB1 for the Colts (1-1) in Sunday’s game in Baltimore against the Ravens (2-0).

Jackson, 24, rushed for 281 yards and two touchdowns and caught 35 passes for 223 yards and one score in 27 games (three starts) over the last three seasons in Indianapolis. He was undrafted out of Duke in 2021.

Sermon, 24, was a third-round pick by San Francisco in 2021. He has rushed for 186 yards and one TD and has three receptions for 26 yards in 11 games (two starts) with the 49ers (2021) and Philadelphia Eagles (2022).

Niners place RB Trey Sermon (ankle) on IR

The San Francisco 49ers placed rookie running back Trey Sermon on injured reserve on Saturday.

Sermon injured an ankle in last week’s 34-26 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. The move to IR means he will miss at least three games.

Sermon has rushed for 167 yards and one touchdown in nine games (two starts). He also has three receptions for 26 yards.

San Francisco also downgraded linebacker Marcell Harris (concussion) to out for Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Niners star linebacker Fred Warner (hamstring) remains doubtful for the contest. Warner has never missed a game in four NFL seasons.

JaMycal Hasty (ankle) out as 49ers search for RBs

San Francisco 49ers running back JaMycal Hasty will be sidelined multiple weeks after sustaining a high ankle sprain during Sunday’s 17-11 road win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Hasty’s injury occurred in the fourth quarter. Further tests on Monday confirmed the diagnosis.

The loss of Hasty comes one week after starter Raheem Mostert was lost to a season-ending knee injury.

Hasty also wasn’t the only San Francisco running back hurt against the Eagles as rookies Elijah Mitchell (shoulder) and Trey Sermon (concussion) also were banged up.

Both of those running backs have a chance to play this Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. Sermon would have to clear concussion protocol.

“JaMycal is the only one that’s for sure out,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday during a conference call. “Elijah and Trey have a chance, so we’ll see how this week goes.”

Mitchell rushed for 42 yards on 17 carries and had two receptions for 11 yards before exiting.

Hasty gained 38 yards on five rushes and made four catches for 21 yards. Sermon gained 8 yards on his lone carry.

Trenton Cannon, claimed on waivers last week, rushed once for a loss of a yard. He is the lone healthy running back currently on the 53-man roster.

Shanahan said the 49ers will work out veteran running back T.J. Yeldon. According to reports, the club also plans to have Lamar Miller and Duke Johnson in for workouts.

San Francisco also has Kerryon Johnson on the practice squad. Johnson rushed for 1,225 yards in 34 games (16 starts) with the Detroit Lions over the past three seasons.
