Sterling Shepard active, Kayvon Thibodeaux inactive for Giants

New York Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard was active for Sunday’s season opener against the host Tennessee Titans, while rookie outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux was among the team’s inactives.

Shepard, who is returning from a torn Achilles tendon, returned to practice just two weeks ago and was activated from the physically unable to perform list on Aug. 24.

He declared himself “ready to go” for the Tennessee game, but Giants coach Brian Daboll said Shepard, Thibodeaux (knee), pass-rusher Azeez Ojulari (calf) and defensive back Dane Belton (clavicle) would all be game-time decisions.

Ojulari and Belton were inactive for New York along with Thibodeaux, the fifth overall pick in April’s draft whose NFL debut will have to wait at least one more week.

Running back Antonio Williams, cornerback Justin Layne, offensive lineman Tyre Phillips and wide receiver Darius Slayton were the Giants’ other inactives.
The Titans kept cornerback Lonnie Johnson, offensive tackle Jamarco Jones, defensive tackle Naquan Jones, running back Julius Chestnut and outside linebacker Derrek Tuszka inactive.

Giants WR Shepard, OLB Thibodeaux game-time decisions at Titans

Sterling Shepard declared himself “ready to go” for the New York Giants’ regular-season opener, but whether the wide receiver is active at the Tennessee Titans on Sunday remains to be seen.

Giants coach Brian Daboll said Friday that all four of the players who have been limited in practice this week will be game-time decisions. That would included Shepard, who is returning from a torn Achilles tendon suffered in December, first-round pick Kayvon Thibodeaux (knee), defensive back Dane Belton (clavicle) and defensive end Azeez Ojulari (calf).

“We’ll just try to take it right up to game time as long as we can to see who’s going to be active and who’s not going to be active,” Daboll said Friday. “So, that’ll be really the next 48-hours if you will – let it go as long as we can let it go.”

Shepard returned to practice just two weeks ago and was activated from the physically unable to perform list on Aug. 24. He is listed as a second-string wide receiver behind Kenny Golladay, Kadarius Toney and rookie Wan’Dale Robinson, but Shepard told reporters this week that he plans to play.

Belton was officially listed as question on Friday while Thibodeaux and Ojulari were listed as doubtful.

“If we have to work them out before the game, we’ll work them out before the game if that’s something we need to do,” Daboll said when asked about Thibodeaux and Ojulari. “But we’re going to give them as long as they can to see if they are ready to go.”

Giants LB Blake Martinez exits with knee injury

New York Giants linebacker Blake Martinez exited Sunday’s game against the visiting Atlanta Falcons with a knee injury.

He was injured on Atlanta’s first drive when he missed an attempted tackle on Falcons wide receiver/running back Cordarrelle Patterson near midfield. He fell to the turf and was attended to by a trainer before heading to the sidelines.

After the Giants took a 3-0 lead on Graham Gano’s 25-yard field goal with 7:01 remaining, the team announced that Martinez was out for the rest of the game.

Martinez, 27, entered Sunday with 21 tackles. He recorded 151 tackles in 2020 in his first season with the Giants, who signed him to a three-year, $30 million contract in March 2020 after he spent his first four seasons with the Green Bay Packers.

Wide receivers Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton also left the game in the first half, both with hamstring injuries. Both were ruled out for the remainder of the contest.

Shepard was injured in the second quarter and was visibly frustrated on the sidelines when FOX’s television cameras focused on him. He gingerly headed back to the locker room and was holding his hamstring.

Shepard, 28, caught two passes for 16 yards before the injury. He has 18 receptions for 223 yards and a touchdown this season.

Slayton, 24, caught his only target for 8 yards against Atlanta, increasing his season totals to seven receptions for 127 yards and one touchdown.
