Shilo Sanders fined by NFL for thrown punch

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Shilo Sanders has been fined $4,669 by the NFL for throwing a punch, multiple outlets reported Saturday.

Sanders found notoriety following the blow delivered to tight end Zach Davidson in the Buccaneers’ preseason contest with the Buffalo Bills on Aug. 23. Sanders was ejected for the play, and Tampa Bay released the rookie free agent defensive back a day later.

“You can’t throw punches in this league,” Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles said. “That’s inexcusable. They’re going to get you every time. Gotta grow from that.”

The 25-year-old Sanders had been a long shot to make the roster, listed as a third-string safety on the team’s depth chart. He contributed four solo tackles during exhibition play.

During six college football seasons — two at South Carolina, two at Jackson State and two at Colorado — Sanders appeared in 52 games with 33 starts. He amassed 217 tackles, six interceptions and five forced fumbles. Shilo played for his father, Deion Sanders, at Jackson State and Colorado.

Buccaneers cut rookie free agent safety Shilo Sanders

One day after being ejected from an NFL exhibition game for punching an opponent, rookie free agent safety Shilo Sanders was cut on Sunday by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Buccaneers, like all NFL teams, must reduce their rosters to 53 players by Tuesday afternoon in preparation for Week 1 play on Sept. 4-8. Sanders, listed as a third-string safety on the team’s depth chart, contributed four solo tackles during exhibition play.

The 25-year-old Sanders was thrown out of Saturday’s preseason game against the Buffalo Bills when he punched tight end Zach Davidson at the end of a second-quarter play when Davidson was blocking him downfield.

Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles said afterward: “You can’t throw punches in this league. That’s inexcusable. They’re going to get you every time. Gotta grow from that.”

Bucs S Shilo Sanders ejected for throwing punch at Bills player

Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie safety Shilo Sanders was ejected from the home preseason game on Saturday night against Buffalo after taking a swing at Bills tight end Zach Richardson.

Sanders, the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders and older brother of Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, was tangling with Davidson, who was blocking him well away from the play and down the field and appeared to make contact with the safety’s facemask when Sanders retaliated.

“You can’t throw punches in this league,” Bucs head coach Todd Bowles said after the team’s 23-19 defeat. “That was inexcusable. They’re gonna get you every time.”

Sanders was disqualified on a play that started at the 6:59 mark of the second quarter, when Bills quarterback Shane Buechele completed a 1-yard pass to Elijah Moore to the Tampa Bay 23.

Now with first and 10 at the Tampa 11 after the penalty, Buechele connected with Tyrell Shavers for an 11-yard touchdown for a 14-3 advantage.

Shilo Sanders, who was an undrafted free agent, played two seasons at Colorado and in 2019-20 at South Carolina and totaled 170 tackles, four TFL, one sack, one interception, five forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries in 34 games. He also played in 2021 and 2022 at Jackson State with his brother for their father.

Colorado S Shilo Sanders (forearm) to return vs. K-State

Colorado safety Shilo Sanders, son of head coach Deion Sanders, is set to return this week when the Buffaloes face No. 18 Kansas State.

Shilo Sanders missed the past three games due to a forearm injury that necessitated surgery.

“Shilo’s ready. He’s practicing. He’s full go,” Deion Sanders told reporters. “Has a rubber cast on. He’s doing his thing. I can’t wait to see him back there.”

Shilo Sanders was a second-team All-Pac-12 selection in 2023 after leading Colorado in tackles (70), taking an interception 80 yards for a touchdown and forcing a Big 12-best four fumbles.

This year, the senior safety had recorded 11 tackles through two games before his injury occurred Sept. 7 in a 28-10 loss to Nebraska.

The Buffs have since defeated Colorado State, Baylor and UCF to move to 4-1 on the year.

Report: Colorado S Shilo Sanders likely out vs. No. 8 USC

Colorado safety Shilo Sanders is not expected to play in Saturday’s home game against No. 8 USC due to a kidney injury, ESPN reported.

Sanders said he was urinating blood after falling awkwardly while making a tackle in the Buffaloes’ 42-6 loss to Oregon last Saturday.

Sanders, who was taken to the emergency room as a precaution, did not participate in practice this week. He is expected to be replaced in the lineup by Rodrick Ward for Colorado (3-1, 0-1 Pac-12) for Saturday’s game against the Trojans (4-0, 2-0) in Boulder, Colo.

In four games this season, Sanders has 26 tackles, one forced fumble and one interception returned for a touchdown in a 43-35 double-overtime victory versus Colorado State on Sept. 16.

Colorado safety Shilo Sanders went to ER after Oregon game

Colorado safety Shilo Sanders, the son of coach Deion Sanders, had to be taken to the emergency room with an undisclosed injury after the Buffaloes’ 42-6 loss to Oregon on Saturday.

In a video released on YouTube by his brother Deion Sanders Jr., Shilo Sanders was seen coming off the team plane and saying that he was “peeing blood.”

Asked if he was all right, Shilo Sanders replied, “Nah, I made a tackle and I landed on my kidney or something bro, so I gotta go to the ER and get checked.”

On Tuesday, Deion Sanders told reporters his son was improving. Colorado is preparing for another Pac-12 game against a ranked opponent this Saturday, this time No. 8 Southern California in Boulder, Colo.

“We went to the hospital right after we landed,” Deion Sanders said. “He’s doing much better. We’re praying that he heals and he’s playing this weekend. He’s a valuable part of our secondary and our team defensively.”

In four games this season, Shilo Sanders has 26 tackles, one forced fumble and one interception he returned for a touchdown against Colorado State.

Shilo Sanders, Deion’s son, officially commits to Colorado

Former Jackson State safety Shilo Sanders announced his transfer to Colorado, a move that allows him to join his father and younger brother.

His father, Deion, is the new head coach of the Buffaloes, while Shedeur is the team’s expected starting quarterback.

Shilo Sanders entered the transfer portal on Dec. 17 but remained at Jackson State to complete his undergraduate degree this spring.

He confirmed his transfer destination late Saturday night with a glitzy video posted on Twitter that concluded with him wearing a Colorado uniform and the word “COMMITTED.”

Shilo Sanders recorded 20 tackles and one interception in 2022 in seven games, one season removed from collecting four picks, two forced fumbles and 39 tackles en route to earning second-team all-Southwestern Athletic Conference honors.

He spent his first two seasons at South Carolina before transferring to play for his father.

Deion Sanders inherited a program at Jackson State that went 4-8 in 2019, the season before his arrival. The Pro Football Hall of Fame member quickly turned around the Tigers with 11-2 and 12-1 seasons from 2021-22 before landing the Colorado job.

The Buffs are coming off a 1-11 season under Karl Dorrell (fired after an 0-5 start) and interim coach Mike Sanford.
