Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence (16) talks with offensive coordinator Press Taylor during practice on Nov. 7 at the Miller Electric Center. Lawrence was limited for a second day in a row because of a left shoulder injury.

Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence pushing to play, not ruling out surgery

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence stands squarely in the middle of two options for addressing his left shoulder injury.

After missing the past two games, Lawrence described his physical status as “feeling better” following his second practice this week on Wednesday as the Jaguars (2-9) prepared to host the AFC South-leading Houston Texans (7-5) at EverBank Stadium on Sunday.

“I’m hoping I’m back out there this week,” Lawrence said Wednesday. “It would be great. That’s what I want. I want to be back on the field playing with my teammates and that’s the plan.”

Head coach Doug Pederson plainly laid out the other option on the table for Lawrence, who said he’s still very much considering surgical repair of his non-throwing shoulder.

Lawrence, 25, said the operation is “definitely something I’m considering and not off the table at all,” and Pederson said he’s “not going to commit” to Lawrence playing this week.

“It has been pretty a difficult thing to gauge what’s the best path forward,” Lawrence said. “Hopefully, I’m able to get back out there this week or as soon as possible, then it’s going to be just every week kind of evaluating it, seeing where it’s at. Up until this point, I’ve been doing everything I can to avoid that. I want to be back out there with my guys and finish the season. That’s my goal. That’s what I want to do. Beyond that, I don’t know.”

Lawrence was hurt in the Jaguars’ Week 9 loss at Philadelphia. Jacksonville returned from a bye last week and Lawrence was able to practice on Monday, but said he felt the clear benefit of rest during the downtime.

He has completed 168 of 274 passes for 2,004 yards and 11 touchdowns with six interceptions.

Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson talks with head coach Kevin Stefanski during an offseason workout.

Browns QB Deshaun Watson progresses to ‘full speed’ throws

Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson shed the pitch count and progressed to throwing full speed passes in the latest tier of his rehab from season-ending shoulder surgery.

“Everything is full motion,” Watson said Tuesday after reporting for Cleveland’s offseason program. “Everything is fluid and motion is really good. The velocity and the strength is really good.”

Watson had surgery in November following a season-ending injury to his right shoulder during Cleveland’s 33-31 victory in Baltimore on Nov. 12. He landed on injured reserve as the Browns signed former first-round pick Joe Flacco from the couch to lead the team’s charge to the playoffs and a wild-card berth.

Acquired from the Houston Texans and signed to a fully guaranteed, five-year, $230 million contract in 2022, Watson has played 12 total games in his first two seasons with the Browns.

He has three years left on that contract and is determined to prove he’s the best man for the job in Cleveland. But Watson won’t be pushing to make any offseason statements at the risk of re-injury, a position head coach Kevin Stefanski said the franchise would take to preserve their QB1 this spring.

“This is an injury that, for spring, you want to be a little bit more conservative. This summer you get ready for training camp. That’s going to be a time where we can pick that up,” Watson said.

Watson, 28, completed 61.4 percent of his passes for 1,115 yards with seven touchdowns and four interceptions in six games in 2023.

A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Watson has thrown for 16,756 yards with 118 touchdowns and 45 interceptions in 66 career games with the Houston Texans (2017-20) and Browns.

Browns QB Deshaun Watson (shoulder): ‘In a great spot’

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson said he is making progress as he continues his recovery on his surgically repaired throwing shoulder.

Watson sustained the season-ending injury to his right shoulder during Cleveland’s 33-31 victory in Baltimore on Nov. 12. He underwent surgery the following month.

“The situation is good,” Watson said on his “QB Unplugged” podcast. “We’re in a great spot, right where we need to be. We have plenty of time to ramp up the throwing sessions and things like that, but everything is going pretty smooth.

“As long as I’m feeling well and the doctors and (physical therapists) and everyone are on the same page, we’re in a good spot.”

Deshaun Watson: Must be ‘on same page’ with Browns to face Cardinals

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson looks better and feels better, progressing to the extent that his return from a shoulder injury could be imminent.

Watson was throwing lasers in Thursday’s practice, an apparent ramp-up in activity he said was merely “part of the protocol … part of the process” and not necessarily a signal he’s ready to go Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.

“We all gotta be on the same page. I told the guys that I was ready Indianapolis week. That was my decision,” he said. “And look, I wasn’t ready. I tried to jump the gun a little bit and it didn’t go our way.”

Watson was replaced in the Oct. 12 game against the Colts by P.J. Walker, who has started three games and gone 2-1. That includes last week’s loss at Seattle, when an interception on third-and-short late in the game gave the Seahawks possession to drive for a game-winning score and dropped the Browns to 4-3.

Watson was first injured Sept. 24 and has a strained rotator cuff.

Resting Watson on Sunday, when the Browns’ defense is likely to line up against Cardinals rookie Clayton Tune in his first career start, would set Cleveland up to bring him back healthier for AFC North games that follow — at Baltimore on Nov. 12 and against the Steelers the week after.

“As you can imagine, I always just kind of keep it day-to-day,” coach Kevin Stefanski said of Watson’s progress in practice. “He’ll be out there, and we’ll see how he does.”

Walker has one touchdown, five interceptions and a 49.5 completion percentage. Rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson, the starter in a 28-3 loss to the Ravens on Oct. 1 in Cleveland, was intercepted three times and sacked four times in that game.

Report: Bills QB Josh Allen (shoulder) facing more tests

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen will reportedly have more tests on his right shoulder Monday.

Early indications, however, are that Allen does not have a major injury, according to NFL Network.

He briefly visited the medical tent late in the first half of Sunday night’s 14-9 win against the New York Giants.

Allen completed 19 of 30 passes for 169 yards with two touchdowns and one interception against the Giants.

Allen, 27, is completing a league-high 71.7 percent of his passes for 1,576 yards, 13 TDs and six picks through six starts for the Bills (4-2). He has also rushed for 131 yards and three scores.

49ers WR Deebo Samuel (shoulder) questionable to return

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel exited Sunday’s game against the host Cleveland Browns due to a shoulder injury and is questionable to return.

Samuel played San Francisco’s first two series, but he was then taken to the medical tent before heading back to the locker room.

Prior to exiting, Samuel was targeted once without a catch. He added a pair of carries for 11 yards.

Samuel, 27, entered Sunday with 20 receptions for 302 yards and a touchdown through five games this season. He also had 84 rushing yards and a score.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson (5) draws back to pass Sunday, Oct. 8, 2023, during a game against the Tennessee Titans at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Colts QB Anthony Richardson (shoulder) ruled out

Indianapolis Colts rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson injured his right shoulder in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the visiting Tennessee Titans and was ruled out for the rest of the game.

Richardson, 21, fell on his right shoulder on a tackle by Titans linebacker Harold Landry III. Richardson, who completed nine of 12 passes for 98 yards, went to the blue medical tent before going to the locker room. He was replaced by Gardner Minshew.

The fourth overall pick in the 2023 draft out of Florida, Richardson missed Week 3 after sustaining a concussion the previous week against the Houston Texans. He briefly came out of the Colts’ season opener with a lower-body injury late in the loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Green Bay Packers linebacker Rashan Gary (52) and linebacker Quay Walker (7) sack New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr (4) during their football game Sunday, September 24, 2023, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis. The Packers defeated the Saints 18-17.

Saints QB Derek Carr week-to-week with sprained AC joint

Saints quarterback Derek Carr was diagnosed with a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder and is considered week-to-week.

Head coach Dennis Allen said Carr felt better Monday and would be available when “he’s healthy enough … I can’t tell you when that’s going to be.”

Jameis Winston would start against the Buccaneers this week if Carr isn’t cleared. Carr was injured at Green Bay and left in the third quarter.

“We’ll evaluate him as we go through the week this week,” Allen said Monday. “I think we dodged a bullet there in terms of anything of real significance. He felt better today than he did yesterday, so we’re not making any decisions today, not ruling anything out.”

Carr landed hard on his right shoulder when he was sacked by linebacker Rashan Gary on a third-down play with 10:39 left in the third quarter.

Carr completed 13 of 18 passes for 103 yards and a touchdown. The Saints led 17-0 when Carr was hurt before Green Bay scored 18 unanswered points.

Winston completed 10 of 16 passes for 101 yards. Allen said the Saints didn’t change the offense when the quarterback switch happened.

“I don’t think so, no. I don’t think what we were doing really changed at all,” Allen said. “Look, I think Jameis did some good things in the game. Ultimately we drove ourselves down there and gave ourselves an opportunity. We didn’t finish.”

Reports: Giants LB Jarrad Davis recovering from shoulder surgery

New York Giants linebacker Jarrad Davis is out indefinitely following shoulder surgery, multiple outlets reported Wednesday.

Davis, 28, was expected to start at inside LB alongside newly acquired Bobby Okereke but there is no timetable for his return.

Davis was signed by the Giants late last December off the Detroit Lions’ practice squad. New York re-signed him to a one-year, $1.18 million contract in March.

A first-round draft pick (21st overall) by Detroit in 2017, Davis has recorded 344 tackles, 11 sacks and seven forced fumbles in 68 games (51 starts) with the Lions (2017-20, 2022), New York Jets (2021) and Giants.

Chargers QB Justin Herbert to throw in ‘next couple of weeks’

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert expects to resume throwing this month as part of the next phase of his recovery from left shoulder surgery in January.

Herbert, who had a torn labrum, continues to actively participate in voluntary workouts, primarily on rehabilitation and mobility exercises with trainers. He hasn’t thrown the ball — or participated in his beloved disc golf — since last season ended in a dramatic loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the wild card playoff round.

“It’s a pretty long process. Kind of expecting to be a five or six-month recovery and being on the lead [throwing] shoulder, it’s kind of tough throwing, golfing and doing all those things that are kind of explosive movements,” Herbert said, estimating his progress to full health at 75 percent. “I’ve done everything I can to rehab to get good movement back in it, strengthen it back up. But I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy journey back. Just doing everything I can to be back.”

Herbert plans to attempt light throwing in the “next couple of weeks,” he said.

General manager Tom Telesco said last week the Chargers are working with Herbert’s reps on a long-term extension, but there are no signs of urgency. Los Angeles picked up Herbert’s fully guaranteed fifth-year option for the 2024 season before Tuesday’s deadline, which buys the franchise more time to plot for the future.

“I think that’s probably a better question for my agent and the front office,” Herbert said of extension talks. “I’m kind of left out of those negotiations and I think my job now, my focus, is to be the best quarterback that I could be and to rehab my shoulder. Make sure that I could be back for these OTAs (Organized Team Activities) and do everything I can in the building,” Herbert added. “As far as (contracts are) concerned, I wish I could give you a better answer.”

The NFL might be looking for a better answer from Telesco and head coach Brandon Staley regarding Herbert’s shoulder injury that led to surgery but didn’t receive mention on the injury report for the wild-card game. He was listed on the Week 18 injury report with a shoulder injury.

Herbert, who turned 25 in March, had 25 touchdown passes in 2022 while setting career-bests for completions (477), attempts (699) and completion percentage (68.2). Herbert said he’s working with new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to be ready when he’s fully cleared to be on the field.

“I think you get as much as you can in the classroom, the walkthroughs, all of the different components to that thing,” Moore said. “Obviously, there will be some field work that Justin may not be able to be a part of — as much as he would want to, we would all want to, but we’ll catch up with it. We have plenty of time through the training camp and all of that.”
