49ers QB Brock Purdy completes elbow surgery

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will begin a six-month recovery period following elbow surgery on Friday.

The procedure to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right arm was performed by Dr. Keith Meister and included the insertion of an internal brace, according to multiple reports.

“The expectation is Purdy will begin throwing in three months and build up his strength from there,” NFL Network reported.

The six-month rehabilitation timeline lines up with the start of the 2023 NFL regular season on Sept. 7.

Purdy apparently avoided a more complex elbow reconstruction that could have increased his recovery period by seven to nine months.

Purdy, 23, made a stunning rise from being the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft to leading the 49ers into the NFC Championship Game.

After quarterbacks Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo were injured in the regular season, Purdy took over and led the team to wins in each of the final five games. Purdy and the 49ers then defeated the Seattle Seahawks and the Dallas Cowboys in the playoffs before falling to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC title game when the elbow injury occurred.

After fourth-stringer Josh Johnson went down with a concussion against Philadelphia, Purdy returned to action but was unable to throw the ball more than a few yards on pass routes.

In the regular season, Purdy completed 67.1 percent of his passes for 1,374 yards with 13 scoring passes and four interceptions. In the playoffs, he had a 65.1 percent completion rate while throwing for 569 yards and three TDs with no interceptions.

Report: Chargers QB Justin Herbert recovering from shoulder surgery

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert underwent surgery to repair the labrum in his non-throwing shoulder, NFL Network reported Sunday.

The surgery took place Wednesday, and he is expected to be recovered in time to take part in the offseason program.

Behind Herbert, the Chargers reached the playoffs for the first time since the 2018 season. They lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars, 31-30, in the AFC wild-card round on Jan. 14.

Herbert, 24, threw for 4,739 yards in the regular season, second to Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs. He completed 68.2 percent of his passes for 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions despite also playing with a significant rib injury.

The Chargers selected Herbert with the No. 6 overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.

In 49 career games, all starts, the Chargers have a 25-24 record. He has thrown for 14,089 yards with 94 touchdowns and 35 interceptions.

Report: Bears QB Justin Fields to have MRI on shoulder

Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields will have an MRI on his left shoulder Monday, NFL Network reported.

He sustained the injury to his non-throwing shoulder on Sunday but played every snap in a 27-24 loss at Atlanta.

“The pain right now is pretty bad,” Fields said after the game.

Fields completed 14 of 21 passes for 153 yards with one touchdown and one interception and rushed 18 times for 85 yards and a score against the Falcons.

In his second NFL season, the 23-year-old Fields has thrown for 1,642 yards and 13 touchdowns with eight interceptions. He has run for 834 yards and seven scores in 11 starts for the Bears (3-8).

Chicago visits the New York Jets (6-4) on Sunday before hosting the Packers on Dec. 4, followed by their bye week.

Trevor Siemian, 30, is the No. 2 quarterback for the Bears. He has completed the only pass he attempted this season, a five-yarder at Dallas on Oct. 30.

Report: Broncos QB Russell Wilson has shoulder procedure

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson underwent a procedure to relieve discomfort in his throwing shoulder, NFL Network reported Saturday.

Wilson reportedly received a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection on Friday in Los Angeles, one day after the Broncos dropped a 12-9 overtime decision against the visiting Indianapolis Colts.

Wilson completed 21 of 39 passes for 274 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions against the Colts, and the Broncos are 2-3 since signing the longtime Seattle Seahawks star to a $245 million contract extension.

Wilson showed up on the injury report last Tuesday with a right shoulder injury, with coach Nathaniel Hackett saying the nine-time Pro Bowl selection was “dinged up” after Denver’s Week 4 loss at Las Vegas.

According to Saturday’s report from NFL Network, the 33-year-old Wilson is dealing with a strained latissimus dorsi muscle, an injury more common to baseball players.

Wilson has completed 59.4 percent of his passes for 1,254 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions in five games. His worst completion percentage for a full season was 61.3 percent in 2017.

Alabama QB Bryce Young (shoulder) day-to-day

Alabama quarterback Bryce Young might throw Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. As coach Nick Saban reiterated on Monday, that’s the nature of a day-to-day injury.

The 2021 Heisman Trophy winner exited Saturday’s game at Arkansas with 10:54 remaining in the second quarter when he was tackled out of bounds and landed on his shoulder. Young was 7-for-13 passing for 173 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Saban said Young avoided serious injury but might not test his readiness early in the week.

No. 1-ranked Alabama hosts Texas A&M this week. The Aggies upset the Crimson Tide last season, and Saban and Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher added a contentious chapter to their storied relationship this offseason over Name, Image and Likeness comments.

Saban said Young would throw this week.

“I can’t tell you if that’s gonna be today, tomorrow or the next day,” Saban said.

Including his first-half work Saturday, Young has thrown for 1,202 yards, 14 touchdowns and three interceptions this season. Viewed as a potential top-five pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Young will be encouraged to take the safe route by coaches.

“The only thing I would tell Bryce is, don’t put yourself in a bad position,” Saban said. “He could have thrown the ball away before, he could have let the guy tackle him, but he was in the awkward position of trying to throw the ball while getting tackled. Sometimes you’ve got to know when there’s no play to be made, and now it’s time to not put myself at risk.”

Vikings RB Dalvin Cook day-to-day with shoulder injury

Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook is day-to-day with a shoulder injury, head coach Kevin O’Connell said Monday.

Cook lost a fumble after a 2-yard gain late in the third quarter and immediately went to the sideline medical tent, where he was ruled out for the rest of the game.

Alexander Mattison had seven carries for 28 yards and a touchdown as Cook’s replacement, but all signs point to Minnesota having Cook for Week 4 when the Vikings (2-1) face the New Orleans Saints (1-2).

“I asked him how he was doing, and he said, ‘I’ll be out there next week.’ We’ll do what’s best for Dalvin and make sure (the medical staff) make those decisions,” O’Connell said.

Cook, 27, finished with 17 carries for 96 yards and a touchdown. He gained 107 yards on 26 carries in the first two games in O’Connell’s new offensive scheme.

A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Cook ran for more than 1,000 yards in each of the past three seasons. He passed the 5,000-yard rushing milestone for his career (5,023) in the win against Detroit.

Report: 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo’s recovery on schedule

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s recovery from shoulder surgery is on schedule and he will begin throwing again soon, ESPN reported Saturday.

Once that happens and he is able to pass a physical, the 49ers are hoping to find a trade partner for the 30-year-old veteran.

Garoppolo had a procedure on his right shoulder in March and has been excused from offseason activities, including a mandatory minicamp earlier this month.

The 49ers are expected to turn over the offense to second-year quarterback Trey Lance, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Garoppolo carries a $26.95 million cap hit for 2022, the final season of a five-year, $137.5 million deal he signed with San Francisco in February 2018.

He went 9-6 as the starter last season, completing 68.3 percent of his passes for 3,810 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Garoppolo has a 33-14 career record with the 49ers and New England Patriots (2014-16). He has thrown for 11,852 yards with 71 TDs and 38 interceptions. He won two Super Bowl rings as Tom Brady’s backup in New England and led the 49ers to Super Bowl LIV.

Report: Rams CB Jalen Ramsey recovering from shoulder surgery

Los Angeles Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey is recovering from shoulder surgery, NFL Network reported.

The 27-year-old All-Pro posted a photo of himself, wearing a sling, with his children on social media.

“ALL IS WELL!” tweeted Ramsey, who is expected to be ready before the start of the 2022 season.

Ramsey made the All-Pro first team for the third time, was selected to his fifth Pro Bowl and helped the Rams win a Super Bowl championship last season.

Ramsey reportedly played with tears in both shoulders last season.

He has 15 interceptions in 91 games (90 starts) with the Jaguars (2016-19) and Rams (2019-21) since Jacksonville drafted him fifth overall in 2016.

Report: Baker Mayfield (shoulder) needs surgery but hopes to delay it

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is expected to have surgery on his left, non-throwing shoulder, and hopes are it can wait until after the season, NFL Network reported Thursday.

He has been playing through a torn labrum suffered in Week 2, and he aggravated the injury Sunday in a loss to the Arizona Cardinals. He has been ruled out of Thursday night’s game against the Denver Broncos.

Veteran Case Keenum will start in place of Mayfield.

By playing on Thursday this week, the Browns (3-3) have 10 days off until their next game on Oct. 31 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, giving Mayfield time for rest and rehabilitation.

Mayfield, 26, played all but four snaps of Sunday’s 37-14 loss to the Cardinals. He completed 19 of 28 passes for 234 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

On the season, he has completed 116 of 173 passes (67.1 percent) for 1,474 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions.
