Giants RB Saquon Barkley, two WRs ruled out vs. Panthers

New York Giants star running back Saquon Barkley and wide receivers Kadarius Toney and Kenny Golladay have been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the visiting Carolina Panthers.

Barkley (ankle) and Golladay (knee) will both miss a second straight game with their respective injuries. Toney, who leads the team with 317 receiving yards, aggravated an ankle injury in New York’s 38-11 setback to the Los Angeles Rams last Sunday.

Wide receivers Sterling Shepard, Darius Slayton and John Ross are questionable with hamstring injuries, while tight end Evan Engram also received that designation as he deals with an ailing calf.

Shepard was able to play last week against the Rams and finished with 10 catches for 76 yards. Slayton did not play last week, while Ross was held without a catch and Engram had just three receptions for 24 yards.

The injury-riddled Giants (1-5) will look for more production from Devontae Booker, who paced the ground attack with 12 carries for 41 yards last week.

Giants WRs Sterling Shepard, Darius Slayton out vs. Cowboys

Giants receivers Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton are among four New York players ruled out for Sunday’s road game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Shepard and Slayton also missed last Sunday’s 27-21 overtime win in New Orleans due to hamstring injuries suffered in a Week 3 loss to Atlanta.

Safety Jabrill Peppers (hamstring) and left guard Ben Bredeson (hand) will also sit out Sunday’s NFC East clash in Arlington, Texas. Left tackle Andrew Thomas (foot) is listed as questionable.

Shepard has a team-high 18 receptions for 223 yards and one touchdown in three games this season. Slayton has caught seven passes for 127 yards and one score in three games.

Peppers started the first four weeks and has 16 tackles and two quarterback hits.

Bredeson was also injured in the loss to the Falcons and will miss his second straight game.

Giants without two top receivers vs. Saints

The New York Giants on Friday ruled out receivers Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton, as well as left guard Ben Bredeson, from Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints.

Shepard and Slayton are dealing with hamstring injuries while Bredeson has a hand ailment. All three were injured during last week’s 17-14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons and missed all three practices this week.

Shepard leads the Giants (0-3) with 18 receptions for 223 yards. Slayton is the team’s fourth leading receiver with seven catches for 127 yards. The Giants have just two TD receptions, with Shepard and Slayton grabbing one each.

Kenny Golladay with 11 catches for 166 yards is the only other New York wideout over 100 receiving yards.

Bredeson’s injury leaves the Giants needing a new starting left guard for the fourth straight week.

Shane Lemieux started the opener but was lost for the season with a knee injury. Center Nick Gates moved to left guard for the second game but broke his leg.

Bredeson’s injury means the Giants will likely turn to veteran Matt Skura at the position. Skura worked at left guard all week in practice sessions.

Also, special teams standout Nate Ebner (quadriceps) is one of four players listed as questionable. The others are cornerback Keion Crossen (elbow), linebacker Tae Crowder (hamstring) and tight end Kaden Smith (knee).

Giants LB Blake Martinez exits with knee injury

New York Giants linebacker Blake Martinez exited Sunday’s game against the visiting Atlanta Falcons with a knee injury.

He was injured on Atlanta’s first drive when he missed an attempted tackle on Falcons wide receiver/running back Cordarrelle Patterson near midfield. He fell to the turf and was attended to by a trainer before heading to the sidelines.

After the Giants took a 3-0 lead on Graham Gano’s 25-yard field goal with 7:01 remaining, the team announced that Martinez was out for the rest of the game.

Martinez, 27, entered Sunday with 21 tackles. He recorded 151 tackles in 2020 in his first season with the Giants, who signed him to a three-year, $30 million contract in March 2020 after he spent his first four seasons with the Green Bay Packers.

Wide receivers Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton also left the game in the first half, both with hamstring injuries. Both were ruled out for the remainder of the contest.

Shepard was injured in the second quarter and was visibly frustrated on the sidelines when FOX’s television cameras focused on him. He gingerly headed back to the locker room and was holding his hamstring.

Shepard, 28, caught two passes for 16 yards before the injury. He has 18 receptions for 223 yards and a touchdown this season.

Slayton, 24, caught his only target for 8 yards against Atlanta, increasing his season totals to seven receptions for 127 yards and one touchdown.
