Two-time Super Bowl champ Sony Michel retires

Two-time Super Bowl champion running back Sony Michel has decided to retire after five seasons in the NFL.

Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay told reporters of Michel’s decision on Saturday. McVay said Michel previously informed the team of his intention to retire.

“What an incredible player. What a great career this guy has had,” McVay said.

“…It’s a bummer. His body’s feeling like it’s talking to him, and I have nothing but respect and appreciation for the competitor that he is and love Sony.”

Michel, 28, signed on for a second stint with Los Angeles last month. He enjoyed success in his first run with the Rams, helping the club win the Super Bowl following the 2021 season.

That season, Michel rushed 208 times for 845 yards with four touchdowns in 17 games (seven starts) while adding 21 catches for 128 yards and a touchdown. He ran for a combined 80 yards in Rams’ four playoff games.

Michel spent last season playing for the Los Angeles Chargers, recording 36 carries for 106 yards to go along with nine receptions for 53 yards.

He has rushed for 3,243 yards and 18 touchdowns and added 56 catches for 439 yards and two scores in 65 career games (35 starts) with the New England Patriots, Rams and Chargers. The Patriots selected the Georgia product with the 31st overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Michel was expected to be the primary backup to Cam Akers (team-leading 786 rushing yards, seven TDs in 2022). Kyren Williams and rookie Zach Evans are also on the depth chart.

Dolphins release RB Sony Michel

The Miami Dolphins released running back Sony Michel on Monday, one of a number of moves ahead of Tuesday’s deadline to reach the regular-season roster limit of 53 players.

Michel, 27, was attempting to make the Dolphins roster after three seasons with the New England Patriots and one with the Los Angeles Rams. Chase Edmonds, Raheem Mostert and Myles Gaskin were also part of Miami’s remodeled running backs room this summer.

A 2018 first-round draft pick by New England, Michel played in 38 games (28 starts) for the Patriots and tallied 2,292 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns over three seasons. He added 26 receptions for 258 yards and a score. The Patriots traded him to the Rams last August for a sixth-round draft pick when the Rams suffered multiple injuries at running back.

Report: Sony Michel to sign with Dolphins

Running back Sony Michel is planning to sign with the Miami Dolphins, ESPN reported Monday.

The 27-year-old free agent spent his first three seasons in New England after the Patriots drafted him in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

He joined the Los Angeles Rams via trade last August and rushed for a team-leading 845 yards with a career-best 21 receptions for the Super Bowl champions.

His most productive season on the ground came as a rookie in 2018, when he rushed for a career-high 931 yards with six touchdowns as the Patriots won Super Bowl LIII.

He instantly becomes the most accomplished runner in the Dolphins backfield with 3,137 career yards and 18 touchdowns on the ground, eclipsing next-best performer Raheem Mostert and his 1,610 yards.

Rams RB Darrell Henderson placed on reserve/COVID-19 list

Los Angeles Rams running back Darrell Henderson was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Saturday.

Henderson felt sick and was tested for COVID-19 on Saturday. The 24-year-old likely will miss Monday’s road game against the Arizona Cardinals (10-2) unless he tests negative on Sunday and Monday.

Henderson leads the Rams (8-4) in rushes (142), rushing yards (648) and rushing touchdowns (five). He also has posted career highs in catches (27), receiving yards (172) and receiving scores (three).

Sony Michel, 26, has turned 103 carries into 426 yards and two touchdowns this season. Last Sunday, when Henderson was out with a quad injury, Michel gained a season-high 121 yards on 24 carries in the Rams’ 37-7 romp over the Jacksonville Jaguars. He also caught three passes.

Rams RB Darrell Henderson’s availability based on pain tolerance

Los Angeles Rams running back Darrell Henderson’s availability for Sunday’s game against the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers remains in question with respect to his injured ribs.

Henderson was removed from the Rams’ 27-24 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday in the second half. The third-year running back was replaced by Sony Michel, who rushed 10 times for 46 yards — all in the fourth quarter.

Michel and rookie Jake Funk, who has yet to carry the ball this season, likely will man the backfield for the Rams (2-0) if Henderson is unable to play against the Buccaneers (2-0).

“It’s really a pain tolerance thing. I think it’s more of just getting his feedback,” Rams coach Sean McVay said Friday of Henderson. “We want to use as much as time as we have. We have contingency plans in place. If that’s the case, those other guys will be asked to step up.”

Henderson, 24, entered the season as the Rams’ top running back after 2020 rookie sensation Cam Akers ruptured his Achilles during training camp, ending his season before he even played a down. Henderson has gotten off to a solid start, averaging over 4.2 yards per carry in each of the Rams’ victories and scoring a touchdown in each game.

Henderson has rushed 29 times for 123 yards and caught four passes for 46 yards in two games.

Patriots deal RB Sony Michel to Rams

Running back Sony Michel is on his way to the Los Angeles Rams in a trade from the New England Patriots for a pair of draft picks.

The former first-round pick is in the final year of his rookie contract and is owed $1.79 million in salary for 2021.

Michel played in only nine games with 79 total carries last season. He was part of a deep and youthful lot of backs with the Patriots entering the 2021 season.

The trade reunites Michel and Rams assistant head coach Thomas Brown, who coached Michel’s running back group at Georgia.

The Rams announced the deal was complete on Wednesday morning as all 32 NFL teams are against the clock with six days remaining to set their final 53-man rosters from the current 80-man limit.

Per multiple reports, the 2022 late-round draft picks are fifth- and sixth-round selections that could become a fourth-rounder based on compensation picks.

Michel, 26, would immediately be in line to compete for a starting spot in the Rams’ woebegone backfield where Darrell Henderson is the presumed primary ballcarrier. Second-year back Cam Akers was the starter entering training camp, but he’s done for the season with a torn Achilles.

The three other running backs behind Henderson on the current roster have not recorded an NFL carry.

Michel rushed for 900-plus yards each of his first two seasons in the NFL.

Reports: Patriots pick up option on Isaiah Wynn, decline Sony Michel’s

The New England Patriots will pick up the fifth-year option on offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn, according to multiple reports Monday.

The Patriots selected Wynn with the No. 23 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and he moved into the starting spot at left tackle the following season. A slew of injuries — a torn Achilles that cost him his rookie season, turf toe in 2019 and a knee injury in 2020 — have limited him to just 18 regular-season games in his first three seasons in the league.

The cost of the fifth-year option for Wynn, 25, is $10.41 million.

NFL Network reported that the Patriots are likely to decline the option on running back Sony Michel, Wynn’s teammate at Georgia who was selected No. 31 overall in 2018. His option is $4.52 million.

Like Wynn, Michel has faced a number of injuries since draft day.

During training camp in 2018, he had fluid drained from his knee, which forced him to miss the first game of the season, then missed two games later after twisting his knee in a game against the Chicago Bears.

In June 2019, he had a knee scope, and in 2020, he spent time on both the COVID-19 reserve list and injured reserve with a quadriceps injury.

Michel, 25, posted 900-plus rushing yards in his first two seasons but gained only 449 yards in nine games in 2020. In 38 career games, he has run for 2,292 yards and 14 touchdowns, adding 258 yards and one touchdown through the air.

Report: Patriots activate RB Michel from injured reserve

The New England Patriots activated running back Sony Michel from injured reserve on Saturday morning, according to multiple reports.

Michel has not played since Sept. 27 against the Las Vegas Raiders. He has missed New England’s past six games because of a quadriceps injury.

The Patriots (4-5) visit the Houston Texans (2-7) on Sunday afternoon. Michel could share carries in the backfield with teammate Damien Harris, who has played a more prominent role with Michel out.

Michel is averaging 6.7 yards per carry on the season. He has 26 rushes for 173 yards and a touchdown.

In other roster moves Saturday, the Patriots released defensive end Derek Rivers and offensive lineman Hjalte Froholdt.
