NCAA must pay Robert Geathers, wife $18M in concussion suit

The NCAA was found to be negligent in failing to warn a former South Carolina State football player about the long-term effects of concussions, a state jury ruled, resulting in a combined $18 million award to the former player and his wife.

An Orangeburg County jury delivered the verdict following a civil trial in which lawyers for Robert Geathers, 68, and his wife, Debra, argued that the NCAA was aware of the potential lasting dangers of concussions but did not share those safety concerns until after Geathers’ career ended.

“All the information they knew, they withheld,” attorney Bakari Sellers told jurors, per the Associated Press, claiming the NCAA had known about concussion risks since the 1930s.

Geathers was a defensive end at South Carolina State from 1977 to 1980.

During the trial, physicians testified that Geathers shows symptoms of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain condition that occurs after repeated head injuries.

Diagnosed with dementia in 2017, Geathers is unable to hold a job, dress himself or make a meal due to severe memory loss issues and other physical ailments, according to multiple reports.

Attorneys for Geathers and his wife argued these symptoms are the result of head injuries sustained during his football career that caused trauma he was unaware of at the time and resulted in symptoms that didn’t show up until decades after he last played college football.

The jury ruled the NCAA “unreasonably increased the risk of harm of head impacts to Robert Geathers over and above the risks inherent to playing football” and that the NCAA “voluntarily assumed duties to protect the health and safety of Robert Geathers” and that the NCAA “negligently breached their duties” to him.

The NCAA can appeal the verdict, which NCAA spokesperson Greg Johnson said the organization disagreed with, citing the results of multiple similar lawsuits.

The “NCAA has prevailed in every other jury trial around the country on these issues,” Johnson said, per the AP, and is “prepared to pursue our rights on post-trial motions and on appeal, if necessary.”

Geathers was awarded $10 million as a result of the civil trial and his wife was awarded $8 million for the loss of consortium.

The Geathers have two sons who played defensive end in the NFL. Robert Geathers Jr. played 11 seasons for the Cincinnati Bengals from 2004-14. Clifton Geathers played in 37 games for five teams from 2010-14.

South Carolina back in top 10, welcomes SC State

Possessing its highest preseason ranking since 2014, South Carolina delivered in its neutral-site season opener last Sunday.

The Gamecocks scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to step away from Virginia Tech 24-11 in Atlanta.

No. 10 South Carolina (1-0) carries its first top-10 ranking in 11 years into its home opener vs. in-state FCS foe South Carolina State (1-0) Saturday in Columbia, S.C.

There were some serious questions about USC’s defense entering the 2025 season after the team lost SEC Defensive Player of the Year Kyle Kennard (11.5 sacks in 2024) and standout defensive tackle T.J. Sanders, one of their five top tacklers. That 2024 unit ranked in the top 20 nationally in scoring defense, rushing defense and total defense.

The first test was passed with flying colors. While the Hokies gained narrowly more yards in the game (336) and moved the chains on 8 of 18 third downs (44.4 percent), the Gamecocks kept Va. Tech out of the end zone, allowing just three field goals in six drives which crossed midfield. They also came away with two interceptions.

“Proud of our guys and the physicality they played with, the effort they played with,” South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer said. “It wasn’t always pretty, but you could never question the effort they were playing with.”

After preseason first-team All-SEC defensive lineman Dylan Stewart had just two assisted tackles and a pair of offsides penalties in the first half, he ramped up in the second half with five tackles (two solo), a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss.

Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers built off his 2024 buzz in his 2025 debut, throwing for and running in a touchdown while racking up 209 passing yards on just 12 completions.

With his strong showing and a few contenders struggling, Sellers had the second-best odds to win the Heisman Trophy one week into the season at +700 on Tuesday, according to BetMGM.

Former sprinter Nyck Harbor, who dropped track this year to focus on playing wide receiver entering his junior season, saw that decision immediately pay off in the season opener. He recorded three catches for a career-high 99 yards in the win, and put the game away with a career-long 64-yard touchdown catch on a deep ball that allowed him to show off the jets.

SC State head coach Chennis Berry enters 2025 coming off a prestigious season which saw him become the first coach in program history to lead the team to a conference championship in his first season.

The Bulldogs finished the season 9-3 with a 28-7 loss to Jackson State in the program’s second appearance in the Celebration Bowl.

SC State eked out a 16-15 home win over Wofford in its opener last week thanks to a 12-yard pass from Ryan Stubblefield to Shamontae Burgess with less than 90 seconds left in the game and a missed field goal at the wire by the Terriers.

This will mark the fourth meeting between South Carolina and SC State, with USC winning each of the first three matchups by 24 points or more.

“We’ll get a chance to go down to Columbia, and play against a really good Gamecock football team, which is a top-15 team in America,” Berry said. “They have some players, but like I tell our guys and our coaches, ‘ball is ball.’ It’s football. We’ve got to go out and execute the game of football.”

Georgia Tech routs South Carolina State

Haynes King threw for four touchdowns to lift Georgia Tech to a 48-13 victory over South Carolina State in Atlanta on Saturday.

King completed 21 of 29 passes for 290 yards as the Yellow Jackets (1-1) bounced back from a 39-34 loss to Louisville.

Dominick Blaylock, Trey Cooley, Eric Singleton Jr. and Brett Seither were on the receiving end of King’s scoring passes. Cooley also scored on the ground, as did Jamal Haynes, who led all rushers with 113 yards on nine carries.

Andre Washington and Kacy Fields each ran for a TD for the Bulldogs (0-3), who totaled 196 rushing yards. Corey Fields Jr. finished with 91 yards and an interception on 9-of-15 passing.

After blocking the extra-point attempt following Fields’ 1-yard rushing touchdown that cut S.C. State’s deficit to 15, the Yellow Jackets struck 16 seconds before halftime.

Haynes returned the ensuing kickoff 67 yards, and King followed with an 8-yard scoring strike to Seither. King found Singleton for a 40-yard TD earlier in the second quarter, helping Georgia Tech take a 28-6 lead into the break.

The Yellow Jackets added to their lead on the first offensive play of the second half, as King tossed a swing pass to Cooley, who then cruised 55 yards to the end zone.

South Carolina State responded with a six-play, 75-yard drive that ended with Washington’s 1-yard rushing TD to make it 35-13.

Aidan Birr’s 30-yard field goal made it 38-13, and Cooley nixed any chance of a Bulldogs comeback when he scored on the ground from 15 yards out with five seconds left in the third quarter.

Birr also made a 42-yarder with 9:33 left in the fourth.

Kyle Kennard came down with an interception on the Bulldogs’ third play from scrimmage. Four plays later, Haynes rushed up the middle for a 4-yard touchdown and a 7-0 Georgia Tech lead.

After forcing a three-and-out, the Yellow Jackets doubled their advantage when King found Blaylock for a 3-yard score with 8:22 left in the opening quarter.

Georgia Tech seeking complete-game effort vs. S.C. State

Quarterback Haynes King will look to build off a strong Georgia Tech debut when the Yellow Jackets host South Carolina State in Atlanta on Saturday.

After spending three seasons at Texas A&M, King looked poised with his new team last Friday, completing 19 of 32 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception, against Louisville.

His efforts weren’t enough to overcome a 16-point fourth quarter from the Cardinals that tagged Georgia Tech (0-1) with a 39-34 loss.

Yellow Jackets coach Brent Key hopes his team can put together a more complete game on Saturday.

“We had a lot of new guys out there that played a lot of meaningful downs (Friday),” Key said. “We had some big plays made by some new guys out on the field. It was encouraging when those guys can go out and do that. But at the same time, we’ve got to be able to do it for the entirety of the football game.”

Georgia Tech struggled to get the running game going during the second half against Louisville, but it should have no problem moving the ball on the ground against a Bulldogs team that has allowed an average of 179 rushing yards through its first two games.

South Carolina State (0-2) most recently allowed 220 rushing yards in a 24-3 setback to Charlotte last Saturday.

Andre Washington threw for 59 yards and a pick on 6-for-17 passing while filling in for usual starter Corey Fields, who is dealing with plantar fasciitis. Fields is nearing his return, as is Prometheus Franklin from a knee injury, leaving South Carolina State coach Buddy Pough with decisions to make regarding who he wants to put under center.

“We think that we’re going to get Prometheus back this week,” Pough said. “He was the heir apparent coming out of last season until he suffered an ACL injury.

“We have a good number of guys in that position group, and we’ll figure out who will be where in the coming weeks.”

The Yellow Jackets posted a 41-10 victory over the Bulldogs on Sept. 4, 2010, in the only previous meeting between the teams.

Spencer Rattler leads South Carolina past South Carolina State

Spencer Rattler passed for 212 yards and a pair of touchdowns and South Carolina’s defense did the rest as the Gamecocks cruised past South Carolina State 50-10 Thursday night in Columbia, S.C.

The Oklahoma transfer completed 21 of 27 passes and also rushed for 31 yards and a touchdown as the Gamecocks (3-2) posted victories in back-to-back games in the regular season for the first time since winning their first two games of the 2021 campaign. Rattler had two interceptions but both were off passes deflected by his intended receiver.

MarShawn Lloyd rushed for 80 yards on 11 carries and scored two touchdowns — on a 5-yard reception to open the scoring in the first quarter and a 2-yard run in the fourth.

Aside from Rattler’s 6-yard run in the second quarter, other South Carolina scores came on Austin Stogner’s 15-yard reception, 1-yard runs by Jaheim Bell and Christian Beal-Smith, and a 13-yard run by backup Luke Doty .

The Bulldogs (1-3) managed only 220 total yards in total offense. Backup quarterback Tyrece Nick rushed passed for 63 yards but rushed for a game-high 95 to give the offense some life after starter Corey Fields struggled in the first half. Fields was 4 of 13 for 12 yards.

But after Nick capped an 8-play, 75-yard drive with a touchdown from a yard out to get the Bulldogs’ deficit down to 22-7 to start the second half, the Gamecocks responded with four touchdowns over the final two quarters.

Gavyn Zimmerman added a 21-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for the Bulldogs.

Mistakes stymied the Bulldogs early on. They were penalized 11 times for 112 yards in the first two quarters alone. A holding call nullified Nick’s 33-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and a trio of defensive flags accounted for 37 yards of the Gamecocks’ 63-yard touchdown drive that closed out the half. The Bulldogs were penalized only once in the second half.

South Carolina preps for S.C. State after game moved to Thursday

The teams immediately went into “hurry-up” mode Tuesday when the scheduled game between South Carolina and South Carolina State was moved up to Thursday night at Columbia, S.C., because of the inclement weather Hurricane Ian is expected to bring to the area.

But, Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer acknowledged at his weekly press conference, “you can’t do everything” in the short week.

“There’s no perfect plan,” Beamer said, “but we’re trying put together the best plan for our team at this moment.”

The Gamecocks (2-2) routed Charlotte 56-20 last week, rushing for 295 yards and breaking the game open with three second-half interceptions.

“I’ve got confidence in our run game and I believe we will get better there,” Beamer said. “I believe we’ve shown that we can run the ball.”

Sophomore MarShawn Lloyd ran for a career-high 169 yards, more than three times his previous best of 55 yards last year.

“Is that MarShawn Lloyd or is that Marshawn Lynch?” South Carolina State coach Buddy Pough said, referring to the former NFL star known for his power running.

Pough’s Bulldogs (1-2) are coming off a 41-27 loss to North Carolina A&T. Without veteran running backs Kendrell Flowers and Alex James, the Bulldogs netted only 12 yards rushing while giving up 284 in the loss.

“We couldn’t run the football and we couldn’t stop the run,” Pough said. “A very unusual sensation for us in a game such as this. We couldn’t stop the run and we could not run the ball.”

Oddsmakers have installed the Bulldogs as much as a 38-point favorite, but Pough said the game provides his players with an opportunity to show they can compete against a bigger program.

“It gives us a chance to show that we belong,” he said, “and I think that means a bunch to a bunch of our individual guys.”

No. 6 Clemson rebounds with easy win over SC State

D.J. Uiagalelei threw for 171 yards and accounted for three touchdowns Saturday as No. 6 Clemson established a 28-0 first-quarter lead on its way to a 49-3 rout of visiting FCS opponent South Carolina State.

Will Shipley added 80 rushing yards and two touchdowns for the Tigers (1-1), who had a predictably easy bounceback from their season-opening loss to then-No. 5 Georgia last week.

Backup quarterback Taisun Phommachanh added 75 yards passing and a touchdown as Clemson finished with 504 total yards offensively, converting 8 of 13 third downs. The Tigers registered touchdowns on all seven trips inside the Bulldogs’ 20-yard line.

Corey Fields Jr. completed 10 of 24 passes for 132 yards with an interception for South Carolina State (0-2). The Bulldogs avoided a shutout when Dyson Roberts converted a 27-yard field goal with 19 seconds left in the first half.

By then, Clemson already scored all the points it needed, thanks to its first-quarter explosion. It started when Uiagalelei scored on a 4-yard run 3:22 into the game, capping a game-opening 72-yard drive.

Shipley made it 14-0 on a 7-yard run with 7:20 left in the quarter, followed by Kobe Pace’s 2-yard rush up the middle at the 3:21 mark. Will Taylor’s 51-yard punt return set up Uiagalelei’s 11-yard touchdown pass to Justyn Ross with 2:21 remaining.

Uiagalelei upped the margin to 35-0 with 6:43 left in the second quarter on a 5-yard run, finishing a six-play, 84-yard drive.

The Tigers tacked on two more third-quarter touchdowns. Shipley polished off a 65-yard drive with a 13-yard run at the 9:39 mark, followed by Phommachanh’s 14-yard scoring strike to J-Lyn Dixon with 3:52 remaining.

Clemson flooded the field with backups and walk-ons for most of a scoreless fourth quarter. But the reserves kept the Bulldogs out of the end zone despite Will Vereen’s four catches for 96 yards.

The Tigers limited South Carolina State to 235 total yards and nine first downs.

Ncaa Football Georgia At Clemson

After disappointing opener, No. 6 Clemson takes on South Carolina St.

After struggling to find any semblance of offensive rhythm in a 10-3 loss to Georgia in its season opener last week, No. 6 Clemson will look to get on track against South Carolina State on Saturday at Clemson’s Memorial Stadium.

The Tigers will look to improve to 36-0 against Football Championship Subdivision teams since the NCAA formed the division in 1978.

Clemson (0-1, 0-0 ACC) is 4-0 against the in-state Bulldogs and has outscored S.C. State 238-20 in those four games.

South Carolina State coach Buddy Pough just wishes Clemson had beaten Georgia on Saturday night.

“We’ve got a chance to get a Tiger by the tail,” Pough said. “They say if your dog chases a car and he messes around and catches it, he doesn’t know what to do. What happens if you catch a Tiger? Especially one that’s been riled up by another Bulldog a week or so before. We’ve got our work cut out for us.”

South Carolina State (0-1, 0-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) is coming off a close loss of its own — a 42-41 defeat at the hands of Alabama A&M.

Corey Fields Jr., a redshirt sophomore quarterback, passed for 213 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 89 yards and another score for S.C. State. Redshirt freshman Kendrell Flowers, a transfer from Wake Forest, had 80 yards rushing and scored three touchdowns.

“They’re coming off an explosive game,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. “Their quarterback is very athletic, he’s fast and he’s going to be a great challenge for us to handle.

“And I think 74 of their 79 guys are from South Carolina, so they’ll be excited to play us.”

Clemson’s offensive line struggled to create holes against Georgia’s defensive front and the Tigers managed only two yards rushing — the fourth-lowest total in program history. Quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei was sacked seven times.

“We’ve certainly got a lot to learn from that game and a lot to improve on, especially offensively,” Swinney said. “But we will, because we have a team that cares. We’ve still got a chance to be one of the better teams we’ve had around here.”

Clemson’s defense, meanwhile, was in midseason form, as might be expected from a unit that returned nine starters. The Tigers held Georgia to 256 total yards and only three offensive points; Georgia’s winning points came on an interception return for a touchdown.

“Clemson’s defense is real, real good,” Pough said. “Their two-deep is as good as any two-deep anywhere. … They can beat you up and what they do is keep each other fresh while they’re doing it.”

Clemson enters Saturday’s game having won a school-record 28 consecutive home games, which is the nation’s longest active streak. Of the 135 players on Clemson’s 2021 roster, 130 have never experienced a home defeat in their Clemson careers.

The Tigers, who are seeking a seventh consecutive ACC championship, are 47-1 at home in the College Football Playoff era.

“You’re talking about a situation that’s volatile at best,” Pough said. “It concerns you. I would have really liked for them to have won last Saturday.”
