Report: Northwestern to start QB Ben Bryant vs. Rutgers

Ben Bryant will start at quarterback for Northwestern in its season opener at Rutgers on Sunday, ESPN reported.

Bryant previously started at Eastern Michigan and Cincinnati. Last season with the Bearcats, he passed for 2,732 yards with 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Bryant announced his transfer after spring practice with Cincinnati.

At Northwestern, he had been competing primarily with junior Brendan Sullivan, with the two receiving most of the snaps in practice.

Sunday’s game will be the head-coaching debut for David Braun, who took over on an interim basis when longtime head coach Pat Fitzgerald was fired amid a hazing scandal within the program.

Braun declined to name a quarterback this week.

Missouri to open season with two-QB system

Missouri coach Eliah Drinkwitz plans to take his time — and see some more reps — before naming a starting quarterback.

Drinkwitz told reporters late Saturday that he plans to play incumbent starter Brady Cook and Sam Horn in the first two games of the season before making any decisions on a full-time QB.

“In this day and age of college football, I think you can very easily see a couple quarterbacks play in the first couple of games and let the play on the field decide it,” Drinkwitz said.

Cook, a junior from St. Louis, started all 13 games for Missouri last season. He threw for 2,724 yards and 14 touchdowns against seven interceptions. He ran for 585 yards and six more scores.

Horn, a redshirt freshman, made one appearance last season. On Nov. 19 against New Mexico State, he threw two incomplete passes and ran once for 10 yards.

The Tigers were 6-7 in 2022.

Missouri will open the 2023 season with a pair of home games — Aug. 31 against South Dakota and Sept. 9 vs. Middle Tennessee State before Kansas State comes to Columbia on Sept. 16.

The Tigers will begin Southeastern Conference play two weeks later against Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn.

Panthers elevate Bryce Young to QB1 on depth chart

The Carolina Panthers moved No. 1 overall draft pick Bryce Young to the top quarterback spot on the depth chart, but coach Frank Reich stopped short Thursday of naming the rookie his Week 1 starter.

Until now, veteran Andy Dalton, an offseason signee, had been listed as the starter and took the opening reps with the first unit in voluntary offseason workouts, though Young also worked with the first team. But Reich told reporters that Young has impressed him enough to make the change.

“It’s just the next step,” Reich said. “We had a couple of weeks to watch Andy. Andy has continued to perform at a very high level. We’re just trying to get our team ready. Everything is about what’s best for our team, and so this was just the next step.”

The first-year coach isn’t ready to hand Young the starting job until he sees more from him, however.

“He’s showing everything you want to see,” Reich said. “But this goes back to even the draft decision. We don’t have to make a decision until you have to make it.”

Reich said this is the timeline that he and general manager Scott Fitterer envisioned when they drafted Young, the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from Alabama. During mandatory camp next week, Young will take the first-team reps and the 35-year-old Dalton will lead the second unit.

Young, who turns 22 next month, said he won’t change his approach.

“For me, it’s about earning it,” Young said. “I’m grateful to have the opportunity that I have. I still think it’s a process. I’m grateful to be accepted by the team. It’s an amazing locker room, a great group of guys. I want to continue with that.

“It’s not something you’re just entitled to.”

Colts to stick with Nick Foles at QB against Giants

Nick Foles will start at quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts against the New York Giants in Week 17, despite a less-than-stellar performance Monday night in a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, interim head coach Jeff Saturday told reporters.

Foles made his first start of the season Monday and was 17-of-29 passing for 143 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions. The former Super Bowl MVP also was sacked seven times for 39 yards.

While the Colts (4-10-1) are playing out the final two games of an unexpectedly miserable season, Sunday’s game is meaningful for the Giants (8-6-1). New York will clinch its first playoff berth since 2016 if they beat the Colts. The Giants have seven total scenarios under which they will qualify.

On the season, the Colts’ trio of quarterbacks — Foles, Matt Ryan and Sam Ehlinger — have thrown a combined 14 touchdown passes and 17 interceptions. Their QB rating is fifth-lowest in the league at 79.6.

The Colts close the season Jan. 8 against the Houston Texans.
