Burgers and returns: Patriots RB TreVeyon Henderson ready for any Super Bowl role

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — TreVeyon Henderson knows not to fumble when the Patriots call his number.

That was the case late-night Monday, when Super Bowl LX starting quarterback Drake Maye brought Henderson into a player entourage heading to In-N-Out Burger — a West Coast staple known for greasy cheeseburgers and other fast-food finds — for a quick bite.

“I’ve had In-N-Out less than five times in my life,” Henderson said Tuesday at the San Jose Convention Center of joining his fellow 23-year-old teammate for some grub. “In-N-Out is good. Every time I come out to Cali, I have to make sure I go there. What makes it even better is they have the little Bible verse at the bottom of it, so I like it.”

The Ohio State rookie was the 38th pick in the 2025 draft. He made a huge splash and turned in memorable games — 148 rushing yards and two TDs against the Bills in December, a three-TD game against the Jets.

But he became an afterthought in the AFC Championship at Denver with a season-low four total snaps in the snow. He played 45.8% of New England’s total offensive plays in the regular season in a shared running back role with Rhamondre Stevenson. Henderson led the Patriots with 180 carries, 911 yards and nine touchdowns during the regular season. Stevenson had 130-603-7.

Stevenson said Henderson’s approach and confidence are unchanged.

“He’s always prepared. It’s kind of a brotherly conversation between the two of us. ‘How can we get each other better?’” Stevenson said.

Henderson, who also returned kickoffs in the regular season, led the NFL with four rushing touchdowns of 50-plus yards in 2025.

Stevenson spent time in head coach Mike Vrabel’s doghouse earlier this season due to three lost fumbles.

But in the playoffs, Stevenson has 51 carries — to Henderson’s 24 — for 194 yards and no touchdowns. His more physical, attacking, between-the-tackles style made him the natural choice on the soggy track at Denver.

Henderson’s explosiveness might be needed against a Seattle front capable of clogging inside alleys. He’s also the superior receiver of the two backs but inconsistency in pass protection might be one reason he’s not getting many looks in the playoffs.

“(Vrabel) always tells us to prepare as a starter,” Henderson said, adding he does still participate in kickoff returns in practice. “I’m not first on the depth chart — we still get reps in practice. I’m still preparing as a starter.”

When pressed about Henderson’s declining role last month, Vrabel wouldn’t point specifically to the proverbial “rookie wall,” a reference to the significant increase in the length and volume of practices and games during the NFL season compared to college football. But he did skim the edges of the topic for a potential cause for his reduced reps.

“We’re always talking about the length of the season, what we need to do to continue, how the practices are and recovery,” Vrabel said. “And mentally, the finish line is not going to move towards us. It’s not going to move closer to us. We have to keep attacking.”

Patriots rule out RB Rhamondre Stevenson (toe) for clash vs. Jets

New England Patriots starting running back Rhamondre Stevenson will miss his third straight game after being ruled out with a toe injury for Thursday night’s home game against the New York Jets.

Stevenson’s absence in last Sunday’s 28-23 road win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers helped pave the way for rookie TreVeyon Henderson to rush for a season-best 147 yards and touchdown runs of 55 and 69 yards.

Stevenson has rushed for 279 yards and three touchdowns in eight games. Henderson has a sore knee but wasn’t given an injury designation.

The Patriots also ruled out receiver Kayshon Boutte (hamstring) for the second straight week. Boutte has a team-best five touchdowns receptions.

Others ruled out by New England were tight end Austin Hooper (concussion) and linebacker Christian Elliss (hip). Running back Terrell Jennings (knee) and defensive lineman Joshua Farmer (ankle) are questionable.

As expected, the Jets ruled out star receiver Garrett Wilson (knee), who reportedly will miss multiple weeks. Wilson has 36 catches for 395 yards and four touchdowns.

New York also ruled out cornerback Azareye’h Thomas (concussion) and listed five players as questionable: defensive linemen Harrison Phillips (foot) and Braiden McGregor (shoulder), edge rusher Will McDonald IV (quadriceps), offensive lineman Xavier Newman (ankle) and running back Khalil Herbert (groin).

Pats RB Rhamondre Stevenson (toe) won’t play vs. Falcons

New England Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson will miss Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons due to a toe injury.

Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel confirmed the news on Friday after Stevenson missed practice for the third consecutive day.

Rookie TreVeyon Henderson is expected to handle the rushing duties for the Patriots (6-2) against the visiting Falcons (3-4). The Patriots also signed veteran running back D’Ernest Johnson to the practice squad on Wednesday.

Stevenson, 27, has rushed for 279 yards and three touchdowns and has 16 catches for 169 yards through eight games (all starts) this season, his fifth with the Patriots. His average of 3.4 yards per carry is a career low.

A fourth-round pick by New England in 2021, Stevenson has contributed 4,464 yards from scrimmage with 26 scores in 64 career games (43 starts). He rushed for a career-high 1,040 yards in 2022.

Bears CB Tyrique Stevenson seeks redemption vs. Commanders

Tyrique Stevenson returns this week to the scene of his worst moment as an NFL player, and he is working hard to get over that incident.

The Chicago Bears cornerback took the brunt of the criticism after he and his teammates allowed Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels to complete a 52-yard Hail Mary as time expired to steal an 18-15 victory last Oct. 27.

When the play began, Stevenson had his back to the action, taunting the fans. He subsequently got involved in the action and accidentally tipped the ball to receiver Noah Brown, who made the winning catch.

The Bears return to Washington to play the Commanders on Monday night.

“Going back to a hostile environment, they’re going to do their best job to rattle me as much as they can,” Stevenson said. “The best thing I can do is come out here and show (my teammates) I’m locked in and ready to go.”

Stevenson credited the other Chicago players with helping him most past the blunder.

“They gave me support,” Stevenson recalled on Wednesday. “Being honest, I got a couple side-eyes. But … this is what we do for a living. This is who we are in some cases. And the best thing we can do is go out there and make great plays.

“I put a bad play on film. The best thing they could do was come around and put their arm around me and be like, ‘We got you.’ That’s what they showed me all last year.”

The play, which came to be dubbed the “Fail Mary,” helped sink the Bears’ season. Chicago was 4-2 entering that game, but the defeat was the first of 10 in a row for the Bears. They won their finale to finish 5-12.

Fan anger over the slump focused on Stevenson.

“It was harsh, it hurt my feelings,” Stevenson said. “That’s the best way I can explain it. It just hurt my feelings being a football player and having one of those mistakes that’s going to linger around. Even when my son grows up, I’ve gotta explain that to him. It definitely hurt.

“But just use it as fuel.”

Chicago is 2-2 this year, having won its past two games. Stevenson has a team-high five passes defensed to go with one interception and 19 tackles.

Bears CB Tyrique Stevenson apologizes for gaffe, loss to Commanders

Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson was responsible for covering Commanders wide receiver Noah Brown on the completed game-ending Hail Mary on Sunday.

Head coach Matt Eberflus said Stevenson took accountability for his mistake and addressed the entire team a day after Jayden Daniels connected on the 52-yard walk-off TD with Brown, who caught a tipped pass in the end zone for an 18-15 win with no time left on the clock.

“I let the moment get too big and it’s something that can’t ever happen again and won’t ever again,” Stevenson said Monday of what he told teammates in the day-after meeting.

The NFL’s All-22 game film offers a vantage point that exposes the extent of the failure on the final play, which came after a 13-yard completion to Terry McLaurin that made the long fling from Daniels possible.

On the last play, Stevenson is facing the end zone and motioning toward the stands behind the Washington sideline before and after Daniels receives the snap. At that point more than 40 yards from the line of scrimmage, Stevenson sprints toward the middle of the field. Because of his pre-snap position and angle to the ball, he never reached his assignment, Brown.

“The play was, I was supposed to box out 85 (Noah Brown),” Stevenson said Monday. “Just cheering with some Bears fans, wasn’t taunting no fans. Cheering with some Bears fans. The Washington fans reacted how they want to. My job was to box out 85. I was trying to make a play on the ball, not trying to make an interception at that point in the game.”

Stevenson, a second-round draft pick in 2023, got a hand on the ball, but it was deflected over the nearest defenders and receivers to Brown standing all alone in the end zone.

“Tyrique’s got to do a good job of putting a body on 85 and boxing him out,” Eberflus said. “(Safety Kevin Byard) KB was the guy that was going to knock the ball down. We’ve got to do a better job in that moment.”

The Bears practice defense of the Hail Mary “a couple of times per week,” according to Eberflus.

Eberflus said he told the Bears the teaching moment underscores the need to remain balanced for players that thrive when displaying a high level of emotion. Any discipline for failed execution on the final play will be kept in-house, the coach said.

Stevenson said his biggest regret from Sunday will stick with him for a while.

“Just letting my teammates down in a situation that we pretty much know how to handle on any day,” he said.

Report: Patriots RB Damien Harris (hamstring) out several games

New England Patriots starting running back Damien Harris is expected to miss multiple games with a hamstring injury, NFL Network reported Tuesday.

Harris is still undergoing tests to determine the severity, per the report.

Harris sustained the injury early New England’s 29-0 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday. He played just six snaps, rushing the ball four times for 11 yards.

Harris has 257 yards rushing and three touchdowns in five starts this season. He has rushed for 1,889 yards and 20 TDs in 32 career games (30 starts), all with the Patriots, who selected him in the third round of the 2019 draft.

Second-year RB Rhamondre Stevenson likely would start in Harris’ absence. He has 372 yards rushing and a TD, having played 59 percent of the snap counts in five combined games this season.

Rookie Pierre Strong Jr. is also on the active roster.

The Patriots (2-3) visit the Cleveland Browns (2-3) on Sunday.
