TJ Finley back in transfer portal after Tulane adds QB

One day after Tulane landed former Big Ten quarterback Brendan Sullivan in the transfer portal, suspended signal caller TJ Finley entered the portal on Friday morning.

Tulane was the fifth school for Finley, who was disciplined earlier this month after an arrest for alleged illegal possession of stolen items worth more than $25,000. A truck Finley allegedly was driving had the license plate of a stolen vehicle in Atlanta.

Finley’s attorney said the Ponchatoula, La., native was a victim of an online scam and was unaware the vehicle was stolen. He made a purchase via a social media marketplace, according to attorneys.

Tulane suspended Finley indefinitely after the arrest.

Finley is due in court on June 1 in New Orleans.

Finley has played one season at LSU, two at Auburn and one apiece at Texas State and Western Kentucky. He transferred to Tulane in December.

Finley has passed for 6,128 yards, 37 touchdowns and 20 interceptions during his college career. His most productive season was in 2023 when he passed for 3,439 yards, 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

On Thursday, Tulane received a commitment from Sullivan, who formerly played for Northwestern and Iowa.

Sullivan passed for 475 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions and rushed for 150 yards and four touchdowns last season in his lone campaign with the Hawkeyes.

Former Iowa QB Brendan Sullivan commits to Tulane

Brendan Sullivan, who has played for two Big Ten programs, announced Thursday that he will continue his college career at Tulane.

Sullivan posted a picture of himself in a Tulane uniform on social media with the word “committed.”

Sullivan was part of the Northwestern program for three seasons before moving on to Iowa for the 2024 campaign. He passed for 475 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions and rushed for 150 yards and four touchdowns last season for the Hawkeyes.

Sullivan missed the final two regular-season games due to an ankle injury before returning for the 27-24 loss to Missouri in the Music City Bowl. He completed 14 of 18 passes for 131 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Following the season, Iowa landed highly regarded Mark Gronowski of South Dakota State in the transfer portal. The NFL prospect is expected to be Iowa’s starting quarterback in 2025.

During his time at Northwestern, Sullivan redshirted in 2021 before passing for 1,303 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions as a spot player over the ensuing two campaigns. He also rushed for 257 yards and three scores.

Tulane also has added transfer quarterback TJ Finley from the portal this offseason. The Green Wave is the fifth school for Finley, who played one season at LSU, two at Auburn and one apiece at Texas State and Western Kentucky.

However, Finley was suspended earlier this month after being arrested while allegedly being in possession of a stolen truck. His attorney said that Finley was a victim of an online scam and was unaware the vehicle was stolen.

Iowa QB Brendan Sullivan (ankle) to start Music City Bowl

Iowa quarterback Brendan Sullivan has recovered from a sprained ankle and will start the Music City Bowl against Missouri on Dec. 30, Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz said Friday.

Sullivan missed the final two games of the regular season due to the ailment.

“He feels fully confident,” Ferentz said of Sullivan. “The injury is history now. It’s passed. Just getting caught up because he missed a couple weeks there. This has been a good period where he’s getting some work.”

Walk-on Jackson Stratton started victories over Maryland and Nebraska while Sullivan was out. Cade McNamara, the starter at the outset of the season, recently entered the transfer portal.

Sullivan has passed for 344 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions and rushed for 144 yards and four scores this season. He was injured during a loss to UCLA on Nov. 8.

Sullivan spent three seasons at Northwestern — redshirting his first campaign on campus — before transferring to Iowa following last season.

Iowa QB Brendan Sullivan out, Cade McNamara back from injury

Iowa quarterback Brendan Sullivan will miss the final two regular-season games and Cade McNamara will return from a two-game absence to replace him when the Hawkeyes visit Maryland on Saturday, according to multiple reports on Monday.

McNamara sustained a concussion against Northwestern on Oct. 26 and has missed the past two games.

Sullivan sustained a sprained ankle in the second half of a 20-17 loss to UCLA on Nov. 8. Walk-on Jackson Stratton finished up that contest with McNamara and Marco Lainez III (broken thumb) sidelined.

Sullivan passed for 344 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in parts of eight games this season. The Northwestern transfer has rushed for four touchdowns.

McNamara has thrown for 1,017 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions in eight games. He is in second season at Iowa after transferring Michigan.

Iowa QB Cade McNamara (concussion) out vs. Wisconsin

Iowa quarterback Cade McNamara will miss Saturday’s game against Wisconsin due to a concussion.

McNamara sustained the head injury during last Saturday’s 40-14 home win over Northwestern. He exited in the second quarter.

McNamara took a hard hit on the play and “hit the turf pretty hard,” Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz said Tuesday.

Ferentz said McNamara is under close watch.

“As far as the severity and all that, my experience, and I’m certainly not qualified medically other than I listen to a lot of things and watch, seems like each and every one is a different discussion, so with some luck hopefully he’ll start turning the corner,” Ferentz said.

McNamara has completed 60.5 percent of his passes for 1,017 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions.

Brendan Sullivan, who replaced McNamara against Northwestern, will be the starter against the Badgers.

Sullivan completed 9 of 14 passes for 79 yards and rushed eight times for 41 yards and a touchdown against Northwestern, his former school.

Sullivan has rushed for three scores this season and Ferentz is hopeful that he will turn down his aggressiveness a bit as the starter against Wisconsin.

“I’d be fine if he slides,” Ferentz said. “If he’s going to run the ball, slide. I’m fine with that. If we had 10 quarterbacks I’d still ask him to do that. …

“But you can’t play scared, either. You’ve got to go out and play, and play the way you play.”
