Washington player Jonah Coleman (1) runs for yardage against Louisville during the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl game on Dec. 31, 2024.

Louisville holds off Washington’s rally to win Sun Bowl

Harrison Bailey threw for three touchdowns Tuesday and Louisville held off Washington 35-34 to win the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas.

Bailey was more efficient than spectacular, completing 16 of 25 passes for 164 yards, but also directed a turnover-free offense that boasted good balance. The Cardinals (9-4) rushed for 207 yards, getting 99 yards from freshman Isaac Brown and 83 from another freshman, Duke Watson.

The Huskies (6-7) got a big game from quarterback Demond Williams, who shrugged off an early pick-six to hit 26 of 32 attempts for 374 yards and four scores. Giles Jackson shredded the Louisville secondary for 11 catches, 161 yards and all four touchdowns.

Bailey snapped a 21-21 tie on a 21-yard touchdown strike to wide-open tight end Nate Kurisky with 4:46 left in the third quarter. Louisville made it 35-21 less than three minutes later on an 8-yard scoring jaunt by Caullin Lacy.

Williams found Jackson over the middle for a 31-yard touchdown pass with 3:42 left in the game to get the Huskies within a score. They got within a point with nine seconds left when Williams hit Jackson on fourth-and-goal for a 1-yard strike but the two-point pass for the win was knocked away by Antonio Watts.

After two 15-yard celebration penalties on the Cardinals, Washington tried an onside kick from their 35 but the ball was knocked out of bounds with four seconds remaining.

Tahveon Nicholson gave Louisville a 7-0 lead 2:45 into the game, picking off Williams and lugging it 21 yards for a touchdown. But Williams responded with a 40-yard strike to Jackson at the 8:09 mark.

Bailey made it 14-7 with 27 seconds left in the first quarter on a 9-yard touchdown pass to Lacy but Williams and Jackson hooked up from 49 yards out with 8:10 remaining in the half.

Bailey’s 28-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Meeks gave the Cardinals a 21-14 edge but Williams rushed for a 7-yard score with 51 seconds left, tying the game at halftime.

Louisville, without many mainstays, meets Washington in Sun Bowl

The Louisville Cardinals will feature a new look as they head to El Paso, Texas, to face the Washington Huskies in the Sun Bowl on Tuesday.

Coach Jeff Brohm’s team will be without starting quarterback Tyler Shough, who threw for 3,195 yards; Ja’Corey Brooks, a 1,000-yard receiver; standout defensive lineman Ashton Gillotte; and Quincy Riley, who led the secondary with nine passes defended and had two interceptions.

Those players are all now preparing for the upcoming NFL draft, and several other players, such as backup quarterback Pierce Clarkson and defensive back Benjamin Perry, entered into the transfer portal.

That said, it is not as if the cupboard is bare for the Cardinals (8-4), who have won four of their past five games and are averaging 36.6 points per game on the season. Freshmen running backs Isaac Brown, who ran for 1,074 yards and an Atlantic Coast Conference-best 7.3 yards a carry, and Duke Watson, who averaged 9.0 yards a carry en route to 514 yards, will still be the centerpieces in the backfield.

In addition, wide receiver Caullin Lacy, one of Louisville’s top transfer portal acquisitions last season, is expected to replace Brooks in the lineup. Injuries sidelined Lacy for most of the season, and he chose midway through to take a redshirt year after playing in just four games. His appearance in the Sun Bowl will not affect his ability to return for a sixth season in 2025.

Another senior, Harrison Bailey, is expected to get the start at quarterback against the Huskies (6-6). Bailey, who previously played at Tennessee and UNLV, has thrown just eight passes this season, completing them all for 63 yards.

While some positions likely have been claimed for next season — Louisville landed former Southern California quarterback Miller Moss in the portal earlier this month — Brohm told reporters during a Sun Bowl press conference that some younger players will be vying for spots for next year’s team.

“It’s important that they do play well if they want to get a position for next year,” he said. “They need to prove themselves in this football game, and we have to make decisions after that, according to how the game goes.”

Meanwhile, the Huskies, after losing in the national championship game last season, stumbled a bit in their Big Ten debut under first-year coach Jedd Fisch. Washington never won or lost more than two in a row this season, falling at top-ranked Oregon 49-21 to end the regular season.

Despite the ups and downs, Fisch noted that the team is treating the game as a reward for the season.

“They are opportunities for players who gave a ton of blood, sweat and tears in spring ball, in training camp, in the season, during 6 a.m. workouts, lifting all throughout November, December, to be able to play in a game,” he said. “For some reason, recently, we’ve decided that (bowl games are) not as important, and I don’t agree. … If you have a chance to go play in a bowl game, it should be a championship mentality.”

Washington averages just 22.5 points a game, 110th nationally out of 134 teams. However, the Huskies have some talented players on offense.

Freshman Demond Williams Jr., whom Fisch lured from Arizona when he became the coach, is expected to start at quarterback. Jonah Coleman ran for 1,011 yards and 10 touchdowns, while Denzel Boston led the team with 807 receiving yards and nine scores.

“We’re excited about going to the second-oldest bowl game,” Fisch said. “I’ve never been to the Sun Bowl, so there’s a new bowl game on my checklist, and we are going to make it a fantastic experience for our team.”

The Huskies will be without multiple players who entered the transfer portal, including running back Cameron Davis (44 carries, 190 yards), offensive linemen Gaard Memmelaar and Kahlee Tafai, linebacker Khmori House (35 tackles, four passes defensed, one interception), cornerback Elijah Jackson (17 tackles, two passes defensed) and punter Jack McCallister (36 punts, 44-yard average).

No. 16 Notre Dame steamrolls No. 19 Oregon State to win Sun Bowl

Steve Angeli passed for three touchdowns in his first career start as No. 16 Notre Dame shellacked No. 19 Oregon State 40-8 on Friday in the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas.

Angeli drew the start after Sam Hartman opted out of the game and he stood out by completing 14 of 18 passes for 212 yards for the Fighting Irish (10-3). Jordan Faison had five receptions for 115 yards and a touchdown and Jadarian Price rushed for 106 yards and a score for Notre Dame.

Jayden Thomas and Jeremiyah Love also caught touchdown passes and Chase Ketterer tacked on a rushing score for the Fighting Irish.

Ben Gulbranson was 16-of-27 passing for 180 yards, one touchdown and one interception for the Beavers (8-5), who lost their third straight game. Gulbranson threw just one pass in the regular season but became the starter for the bowl game after both DJ Uiagalelei and Aidan Chiles entered the transfer portal.

The Beavers were also without star running back Damien Martinez and leading tackler Easton Mascarenas-Arnold. In addition, wide receivers coach Kefense Hynson served as interim coach after Jonathan Smith departed for the Michigan State gig.

Oregon State avoided the shutout when Gulbranson tossed a 33-yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Valsin III with 6:19 left in the game. Tyler Voltin ran in for the two-point conversion.

The Fighting Irish outgained the Beavers 448-197. Oregon State netted 2 yards on the ground while Notre Dame piled up 236.

Notre Dame was dominant throughout and increased its lead to 24 with 10 third-quarter points.

Spencer Shrader booted a 44-yard field goal with 9:43 left in the third quarter to give the Fighting Irish a 17-0 lead.

Six-plus minutes later, Angeli threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Faison.

In the fourth quarter, Notre Dame’s Gi’Bran Payne was stopped at the Oregon State 1-yard line on fourth down to turn the ball over to the Beavers.

On the next play, Oregon State’s Isaiah Newell couldn’t make it out of the end zone as the Fighting Irish added a safety with 11:24 remaining. Notre Dame then increased the lead to 33-0 on Angeli’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Love en route to finishing off the win.

Notre Dame limited the Beavers to 103 total yards while taking a 14-0 halftime advantage.

The Fighting Irish moved ahead when Angeli tossed an 8-yard scoring pass to Thomas with 6:47 left in the first quarter.

Price’s 1-yard run with 27 seconds left in the half gave Notre Dame the 14-point margin.

Oregon State lifts suspension on RB Damien Martinez before Sun Bowl

Oregon State sophomore Damien Martinez, an All-Pac-12 first-team running back, will play in the Sun Bowl game after the school lifted his suspension on Friday.

Martinez was suspended on Nov. 30 after his arrest on Nov. 29 on DUI charges in Corvallis, Ore. The 19-year-old was pulled over for allegedly speeding and subsequently cited for DUI, reckless driving, reckless endangerment and possession of marijuana by a minor.

The Benton County District Attorney’s office said Friday that after reviewing evidence — including newer evidence not available to police on Nov. 29 — “we do not believe sufficient evidence exists to meet the higher burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt in order to support criminal convictions in this matter.”

Oregon State athletic director Scott Barnes said in a statement Friday: “Due to the District Attorney’s decision not to file charges on the DUII or similar offenses against Damien Martinez, he will be allowed to participate in the upcoming bowl game.”

No. 19 Oregon State (8-4) faces No. 16 Notre Dame (9-3) on Dec. 29 in El Paso, Texas.

Martinez has rushed for 1,185 yards — second in the Pac-12 — and nine touchdowns on 194 carries in 12 games this season for a 6.1 average per carry and 98.8-yard average per game. His two-year total is 2,167 yards and 16 TDs on 355 carries in 25 games.

The Beavers lost head coach Jonathan Smith to the same post at Michigan State, and quarterbacks D.J. Uiagalelei and Aidan Chiles have entered the transfer portal.

Pitt rallies past No. 18 UCLA, wins Sun Bowl on late field goal

Ben Sauls set a Sun Bowl record by going 5-of-5 on field-goal attempts, including the game-winning, 47-yard attempt with four seconds remaining to elevate Pitt to a 37-35 win over No. 18 UCLA on Friday in El Paso, Texas.

Pitt (9-4) scored 20 straight points in the second half, rallying from down 28-14 after Jaylin Davies’ 52-yard pick-6 in the third quarter for UCLA (9-4), to pull ahead 34-28.

But after a failed fourth-down conversion attempt with a little more than two minutes remaining, the Panthers gave up a 70-yard drive, resulting in the Bruins’ lone offensive touchdown of the second half.

T.J. Harden, filling in for Pac-12 Conference-leading rusher Zach Charbonnet as UCLA’s primary ball-carrier, capped a 111-yard day with a go-ahead 8-yard score with 34 seconds remaining. The touchdown marked the culmination of a drive in which Harden also broke free for a 34-yard gain.

Quarterback Ethan Garbers — who stepped in after Bruins standout Dorian Thompson-Robinson left the game in the second half, the result of an unspecified injury — completed passes of 12 yards to Titus Mokiao-Atimalala and 14 yards to Jake Bobo on the possession.

With no timeouts remaining, Pitt drove 46 yards in 30 seconds.

Quarterback Nick Patti completed passes of 18 yards to Jared Wayne, then 17 yards to Bub Means on a spectacular catch that nearly hit the turf. Patti then evaded tacklers — any of which would have ended the game with the Panthers unable to call timeout — to rush 11 yards and stop the clock with a first down.

That gave Pitt time to send out Sauls for his fifth and most significant kick of the day.

Patti went 20-of-41 for 232 yards in the win, which gave Pitt consecutive seasons of nine-plus wins for the first time since 2008 and 2009. Tylar Wiltz had a key performance for the Panthers’ defense with a sack and an interception.

UCLA fell short of matching its program-best mark of 10 wins. Kam Brown caught four passes for 115 yards in the loss, while Mokiao-Atimalala and Logan Loya were on the receiving end of Thompson-Robinson’s two touchdown throws.

Thompson-Robinson had 262 yards passing but threw three interceptions before his exit.

No. 18 UCLA, Pitt seek to polish off successful years at Sun Bowl

No. 18 UCLA can reach 10 wins for the first time since 2014 against Pitt, which seeks it best consecutive finishes since 2008-09, at the Sun Bowl on Friday in El Paso, Texas.

The Bruins (9-3) embarked on the closing weeks of the regular season in contention for their first Pac-12 championship since 1998 and a berth in the College Football Playoff, but they dropped decisions to Arizona and rival Southern California by a combined nine points.

Despite falling out of the title race, the Sun Bowl provides plenty of motivation for UCLA. It is the first postseason opportunity for the Bruins in the tenure of head coach Chip Kelly, after last year’s scheduled Holiday Bowl matchup with NC State was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.

“I’m very excited. Hopefully everything goes according to plan and this will be the first bowl game I play in,” center Duke Clemens said, adding the significance of earning a potential 10-3 final record. “It’s very important. As I know, that doesn’t happen a lot at UCLA. For this team to go get a 10th win would be awesome.”

UCLA has reached the 10-win threshold — the program record for most in a season — just nine times.

Whether the Bruins will pursue that landmark victory with quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson remains unclear. Thompson-Robinson completed a shade less than 70 percent of his 358 pass attempts in the regular season for 2,883 yards with 25 touchdowns.

The dual-threat playmaker also ran for 631 yards with 11 rushing touchdowns, complementing the power-run game of back Zach Charbonnet. Both Thompson-Robinson and Charbonnet have continued practicing with UCLA despite their uncertain status for the Sun Bowl.

“As of right now, it’s leaning more towards playing,” Thompson-Robinson said of his own status during a Dec. 16 media availability.

Pitt (8-4) heads to El Paso in pursuit of its best consecutive finishes since winning nine games in 2008 and 10 games the following season. The Panthers finished 11-3 a season ago with an Atlantic Coast Conference championship.

The departure of Heisman Trophy-finalist quarterback Kenny Pickett and transfer of Biletnikoff Award-winning wide receiver Jordan Addison led to a facelift for the Pitt offense, which leans on the rushing combination of running backs Vincent Davis, Rodney Hamond Jr. and Israel Abanikanda.

Abanikanda led the ACC with 1,431 rushing yards, but he is a definite scratch for the Sun Bowl after declaring for the NFL draft on Dec. 19. The Panthers defense will be without All-American defensive tackle Calijah Kancey, who made his postseason departure official with an announcement on Dec. 22.

“It’s a great thing. We wish those guys luck. They all have decisions to make,” Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi said. “We obviously wish they were playing, but that’s their decision. All I can do and all our staff can do is educate them on, hey, what we think, and they’ve got to make a decision (that is) best for them.

“Fifteen years ago,” Narduzzi added, “Guys would have given their left leg to play in a bowl game. I don’t think it’s the case anymore.”

Among the personnel questions for Pitt going into the Sun Bowl is quarterback. Kedon Slovis, who started much of the regular season, transferred. Nick Patti played in last season’s Peach Bowl in place of the exiting Pickett but broke his collarbone in the first quarter.

Patti announced his intention to transfer for the 2023 season but is competing with Nate Yarnell for the starting spot in the Sun Bowl.

CMU winds up at Sun Bowl vs. Wazzu in last-minute shuffle

Just a couple of hours after the Washington State football team landed Sunday in El Paso, Texas, it learned its opponent in the Sun Bowl, the University of Miami, had been forced to pull out of the Friday game because of coronavirus concerns.

Cougars coach Jake Dickert took to Twitter to issue a plea.

“Our team is in El Paso and willing to play any opponent,” Dickert wrote. “Our team just wants one more chance to finish this storied 2021 season.”

A little more than 24 hours later, Dickert got his wish.

When Boise State pulled out of the Arizona Bowl on Monday because of its own pandemic problems, that left Central Michigan sitting in Tucson, Ariz., with nobody to play Friday.

With Tucson and El Paso only about 300 miles apart on Interstate 10, a deal was struck for the Chippewas to bus eastward to meet Washington State in the Sun Bowl, with the Arizona Bowl being canceled.

Terms of the agreement weren’t announced, but Central Michigan should be in for a windfall. The Sun Bowl, one of the oldest in college football, has a payout of more than $4.5 million per team and is broadcast on CBS. The Arizona Bowl offered a $350,000 payout per school and was going to be streamed online.

“We are grateful for the diligent work of the Sun Bowl Association, the Pac-12 Conference, the Mid-American Conference and Central Michigan University to ensure the 2021 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl will be played,” Washington State athletic director Pat Chun said in a statement.

The Chippewas (8-4) feature the Football Bowl Subdivision’s leading rusher, Lew Nichols III, who gained 1,710 yards and scored 15 touchdowns on the ground. Nichols also had 300 yards and two TDs receiving.

Despite being the MAC’s freshman of the year in 2020, Nichols was supposed to be a secondary option this season until Kobe Lewis sustained a knee injury in summer camp.

“I kind of just pulled (Nichols) aside and said, ‘Look, here we go, let’s jump on your back and ride,’” McElwain said. “I’ve been at some pretty good places, had a Heisman Trophy winner (Mark Ingram Jr. in 2009, when McElwain was an assistant at Alabama) and had some other things.

“But to lead the nation in rushing, that’s a heck of a feat.”

The Chippewas won their final four regular-season games, a span in which they averaged 41 points per contest, to tie Northern Illinois for the MAC’s West Division title.

The Cougars (7-5) have won six of their past eight games, including snapping a seven-game Apple Cup losing streak with a 40-13 victory against rival Washington. Max Borghi rushed for 129 yards and two TDs in that game but is skipping the bowl game and entering the NFL draft.

Cougars right tackle Abraham Lucas and cornerback Jaylen Watson also didn’t make the trip to prepare for their pro futures.

“We had a lot of conversations about it, and we obviously wish them the best of luck, and we support them,” said Dickert, who took over at midseason after Nick Rolovich was dismissed for not following the state’s vaccine mandate. “Everyone has their own individual situations.”

Miami (FL) withdraws from Sun Bowl due to COVID-19

Miami (FL) will not play in Friday’s Sun Bowl against Washington State due to an ongoing COVID-19 situation within its program, the university announced Sunday night.

The Hurricanes first entered COVID protocols last Tuesday, with the Miami Herald reporting at the time that several players had tested positive for the coronavirus. The program pushed back its arrival in El Paso, Texas, until one day prior to the Sun Bowl as it hoped to fend off the spread of COVID affecting multiple position groups.

It was unclear whether the Sun Bowl would find a new opponent for Washington State so the game can go on as scheduled. Three bowl games — the Military Bowl, Fenway Bowl, and Hawaii Bowl — had previously been canceled due to COVID spread.

Although SMU, East Carolina, and Memphis became bowl-eligible teams without bowl games, officials at those schools indicated that players had been dispersed from the teams and they would not anticipate rescheduling in a different bowl. Following the first coronavirus casualty of the bowl season, Rutgers received a late invitation to replace Texas A&M in the Gator Bowl and will face Wake Forest on New Year’s Eve.

“We are extremely disappointed that our football team will be unable to participate in the 2021 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl,” Jennifer Strawley, Miami’s deputy director of athletics and chief operating officer, said in a statement. “But due to the number of COVID-19 cases impacting our roster we do not have enough student-athletes to safely compete, and the health and safety of our student-athletes will always be our top priority. This team worked hard all season to earn a bowl invitation and my heart goes out to our student-athletes, especially our seniors.”

The Hurricanes fired coach Manny Diaz after a 7-5 regular season and hired alum and former Oregon coach Mario Cristobal. Interim coach Jess Simpson was slated to lead the team in the game against the Cougars.

“We regret the impact this has on the Washington State program and their postseason experience,” Strawley’s statement said. “I want to commend the Sun Bowl Association for their tireless work in helping us navigate this situation over the past several days.”

Miami faces uncertain road to meet Wazzu in Sun Bowl

It appears the Miami Hurricanes won’t get to take part in most of the Sun Bowl’s pregame trappings — if they even make it to El Paso, Texas, at all.

A COVID-19 outbreak, with more than 10 players reportedly testing positive, cast a doubt on whether the Hurricanes (7-5) would be able to meet Washington State (7-5) on New Year’s Eve in one of college football’s oldest bowl games.

The Hurricanes were scheduled to travel to El Paso this weekend, but now they might make the trip as late as Dec. 30, Sun Bowl chairman John Folmer told the Miami Herald.

“We’re not looking for anyone else to play but Miami. The people in El Paso are buying tickets because of Miami. People in El Paso follow Miami,” Folmer said.

“If the game was (the week before Christmas), we wouldn’t have them. We told them we’d wait until whenever they could get here, and they responded by saying, ‘We’re going to do the best we can to make it happen, and we’ll arrive when we can, even if it’s one day before the game.”‘

The Hurricanes will be led by interim coach Jess Simpson, even though Mario Cristobal has already been hired to replace the fired Manny Diaz.

Miami has won five of its past six games, scoring 31 or more points in each of the victories.

Freshman quarterback Tyler Van Dyke averaged 365.6 passing yards and threw for 20 touchdowns and just three interceptions in those six games, earning the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Newcomer of the Year award.

“I told myself I was just going to go out there and start playing with confidence,” Van Dyke said. “My teammates have supported me and helped me the rest of the way. I’m very grateful for that.”

Leading receiver Charleston Rambo (79 catches for 1,172 yards and seven touchdowns) has opted out of the bowl game to prepare for the NFL draft, as has defensive tackle Jon Ford.

The same can be said for Washington State’s leading rusher, Max Borghi (880 yards and 12 touchdowns), right tackle Abraham Lucas and cornerback Jaylen Watson.

“We had a lot of conversations about it, and we obviously wish them the best of luck, and we support them,” Cougars coach Jake Dickert said. “Everyone has their own individual situations.”

Deon McIntosh, a Miami-area native, is expected to get most of the carries in Borghi’s absence.

The Cougars could be missing two other members of their offensive line, as left tackle Liam Ryan has been dealing with an unspecified injury and right guard Cade Beresford transferred to Boise State.

Washington State won six of their last eight regular-season games, including snapping a seven-game losing streak in the Apple Cup with a 40-13 victory against rival Washington. Borghi rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns in that game.

Dickert became the interim coach after Nick Rolovich was dismissed Oct. 18 for failing to comply with Washington Gov. Jay Inslee’s mandate that all state employees be vaccinated against the coronavirus. Dickert was named the permanent coach the day after the Apple Cup.

The Cougars and Hurricanes have met once before, in the 2015 Sun Bowl. Washington State built an early lead and held on to win 20-14 as the fourth quarter was played in blizzard-like conditions.
