Reports: Eagles LB Haason Reddick to have thumb surgery

Philadelphia Eagles pass rusher Haason Reddick will have thumb surgery, multiple outlets reported Thursday.

The Pro Bowl linebacker, who was injured in practice on Monday, is expected to be back on the field by Week 1.

Reddick, 28, collected a team- and career-high 16 sacks in 17 starts in his first season with the Eagles in 2022.

He has registered 372 tackles, 47 sacks and 16 forced fumbles in 97 games (64 starts) with the Arizona Cardinals (2017-20), Carolina Panthers (2021) and Eagles. Arizona drafted him 13th overall in 2017.

Rookie linebacker Nolan Smith, a 2023 first-round pick from Georgia, is expected to receive the majority of the first-team reps in Reddick’s absence.

The Eagles host the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night for their second preseason game. The defending NFC champions open the regular season at New England on Sept. 10.

Report: Ravens CB Marlon Humphrey to have foot surgery

Baltimore Ravens All-Pro cornerback Marlon Humphrey will have foot surgery Wednesday and be sidelined for four to six weeks, multiple outlets reported.

The recovery timeline means the three-time Pro Bowl selection likely will miss at least the first two games of the regular season.

Humphrey, 27, started all 17 games last season and posted 71 tackles, three sacks and three interceptions.

He reportedly sustained the foot injury during a joint practice with the Washington Commanders on Tuesday.

Since being drafted in the first round (16th overall) by Baltimore in 2017, Humphrey has recorded 347 tackles, 71 passes defensed, 13 forced fumbles and 12 interceptions in 90 games (72 starts).

Humphrey’s absence opens the door for 2022 fourth-round picks Damarion Williams or Jalyn Armour-Davis to earn the starting cornerback slot opposite Rock Ya-Sin.

The Ravens kick off the regular season at home against the Houston Texans on Sept. 10 before traveling to face the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2.

Deion Sanders to have surgery, miss Pac-12 media day

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders is scheduled to undergo another surgery and will miss Pac-12 media day on Friday in Las Vegas.

Sanders is scheduled to undergo the surgery Thursday.

In a post on Instagram, Sanders said he will be ready to go when camp opens later this summer and for the season opener on Sept. 2 at TCU in his first season as Colorado’s coach.

Sanders has faced health issues over the past couple of years.

In June, he said he had multiple blood clots surgically removed, including a “really bad” one that surgeons removed from his left thigh.

This time, he said in a video posted to Instagram, the surgeons will operate on two toes in his left foot to relieve pain and also remove blood clots from his right leg.

“I apologize that I’m not gonna be at the Pac-12 media day due to I have to have another surgery tomorrow — a couple of surgeries — one in my leg, as well as to remove other clots,” Sanders said.

“I promise you when we go to TCU, I’m running out in front of our team. I promise you that.”

Sanders, who turns 56 next month, said in June that he would need the surgery on his right leg.

He underwent multiple surgeries in 2021 and missed three games during his time as the head coach at Jackson State. He returned to the sidelines coaching from a wheelchair and later with the use of a custom scooter.

Defensive coordinator Charles Kelly will fill in for Sanders at media day.

The Buffaloes finished 1-11 last season under Karl Dorrell and interim coach Mike Sanford.

Deion Sanders: ‘Really bad’ clot removed from leg

Deion Sanders said Saturday that he had multiple blood clots removed during surgery the day before, including a “really bad” one that surgeons removed from his left thigh.

Sanders, 55, also said he expects to be out of the hospital Sunday. The Colorado head coach gave the updates in a series of social media posts on different platforms.

“I had a big blood clot in my thigh that they got out, and I had some below my knee that they got out,” Sanders said in an Instagram post Saturday. “Then I’ve got one in the right leg that they’re going to get soon.”

It’s unclear exactly how many clots were removed, but Sanders said the one taken from his left thigh was the most significant.

“That was the one that was doing the most damage,” he said in a video that was posted by his son Deion Jr. to YouTube.

Sanders had the surgery Friday.

Sanders underwent multiple surgeries in 2021 and missed three games during his time as the head coach at Jackson State. He returned to the sidelines coaching from a wheelchair and later with the use of a custom scooter.

Report: Deion Sanders to undergo surgery for blood clot

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders is set to undergo emergency surgery Friday morning to remove a blood clot from his groin, according to former NFL player Adam “Pacman” Jones.

Jones made the announcement Thursday on “The Pat McAfee Show,” where Jones is a weekly guest.

Jones said he talked directly to Sanders and that the surgery is set for 6 a.m. It’s unclear where Sanders is having the procedure.

The news comes days after Sanders, 55, was informed by doctors that blood flow issues in his left foot could force surgeons to consider amputation.

Dr. Donald Jacobs told Sanders in a meeting that included CU medical staff that “he could lose the foot.” Sanders has no feeling at the bottom of the foot and already underwent surgery to amputate two toes because of blood clotting.

Another surgeon told the Pro Football Hall of Famer that the blood pressure in his foot was just two-thirds what was measured in his arm.

Sanders underwent multiple surgeries in 2021 and missed three games during his time as the head coach at Jackson State. He returned to the sidelines coaching from a wheelchair and later with the use of a custom scooter.

Report: Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo had foot surgery in March

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo underwent surgery on his injured left foot after signing a contract with the Las Vegas Raiders, The Athletic reported on Thursday.

Garoppolo signed a three-year contract worth $72.75 million on March 17 and effectively renewed acquaintances with Josh McDaniels, his new head coach. McDaniels was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in New England during Garoppolo’s first three-plus seasons in the league.

McDaniels on Thursday, however, opted against getting into specifics as to whether Garoppolo underwent a medical procedure.

“He’s going through his process just like we knew he would,” McDaniels said. “Nothing has happened that would surprise us based on the information we had.”

Garoppolo, 31, left the San Francisco 49ers after six seasons and multiple deep playoff runs together.

Garoppolo was the starting quarterback in San Francisco’s run to Super Bowl LIV, where he threw a touchdown and two interceptions in a 31-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in February 2020. The Niners reached the NFC Championship game in the 2021 season, losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.

Since entering the league with the Patriots in 2014, Garoppolo has a 40-17 record as a starter in the regular season. He has totaled 14,289 passing yards, 87 touchdowns and 42 interceptions with a 67.6 career completion percentage.

Panthers DE Brian Burns has ankle surgery

Pro Bowl pass-rusher Brian Burns underwent surgery on his right ankle last Wednesday, the Carolina Panthers announced Monday.

Tests revealed a small fracture in the ankle, the Panthers said, after Burns said he was experiencing soreness during offseason workouts. Burns was kept out of the Panthers’ regular-season finale in January with an ankle sprain, but he was able to play in the Pro Bowl Games some weeks later.

Burns is expected to be ready for the start of Carolina’s training camp later this summer with “no limitations for the upcoming season,” per the team.

Burns, 25, recorded a career-high 12.5 sacks in 16 games (all starts) in 2022. In 64 games (51 starts) since the Panthers made him the 16th overall selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, Burns has racked up 38 sacks along with 196 tackles, 11 pass breakups and seven forced fumbles.

Browns WR Amari Cooper had offseason surgery

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper revealed Tuesday he underwent core muscle surgery in February.

Cooper said he is in his eighth week of recovery and on track to be ready for the season.

“I feel good,” the four-time Pro Bowl selection told reporters. “I feel like I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.”

Cooper, 28, said he played through pain at the end of last season, still finishing with his sixth 1,000-yard campaign.

He underwent the procedure with Philadelphia specialist Dr. William Meyers, according to Cleveland.com.

Cooper caught 78 passes for 1,160 yards and a career-high nine touchdowns in 17 starts in his first season with the Browns in 2022.

He has 595 receptions for 8,236 yards and 55 TDs in 125 games (118 starts) with the then-Oakland Raiders (2015-18), Dallas Cowboys (2018-21) and Browns.

49ers QB Brock Purdy expects to be throwing in training camp

Quarterback Brock Purdy expects to be throwing a football by June and could be on schedule to practice with few limitations when the San Francisco 49ers open training camp in late July.

Purdy, 23, had surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right arm earlier this month, but 49ers general manager John Lynch said the second-year quarterback would be in line to start if the season began now.

But the trouble with assessing Purdy in April is the only real measure of his progress comes when throwing begins.

“The protocol is you start throwing at three months, but it all depends on how your therapy and your range of motion and everything goes up until that point,” Purdy told the San Jose Mercury-News. “There are definitely some boxes I have to check off first before I get to that point, but that’s the plan as of now.”

Purdy made a stunning rise from being the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft to leading the 49ers into the NFC Championship Game.

He said the size of the elbow brace he’s wearing during the first part of his post-op rehab makes it appears as if he has a “bionic arm.”

“When you first get in it after surgery, you’re in it at 90 degrees. From there, you can start opening it up to help with your range of motion,” Purdy said. “It is just to keep your arm safe when you’re out walking around or doing therapy. But at night, I can take it off and just do some normal motions with just looking at my arm.”

When he gets back on the field, he’ll have company in the form of Trey Lance and Sam Darnold, a pair of former No. 3 overall picks. Lance, the third pick in 2021, began last season as San Francisco’s starter but sustained a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2.

Darnold signed as an unrestricted free agent after two seasons with the Carolina Panthers, who acquired him from the New York Jets. The Jets drafted Darnold with the third pick in the 2018 draft.

Purdy, selected with the 262nd and final pick in the 2022 draft, emerged as the No. 1 quarterback for the 49ers after Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo went down with injuries. He was undefeated in seven games before losing his eighth, the NFC Championship Game, after injuring his elbow in the first quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles.

49ers QB Brock Purdy completes elbow surgery

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will begin a six-month recovery period following elbow surgery on Friday.

The procedure to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right arm was performed by Dr. Keith Meister and included the insertion of an internal brace, according to multiple reports.

“The expectation is Purdy will begin throwing in three months and build up his strength from there,” NFL Network reported.

The six-month rehabilitation timeline lines up with the start of the 2023 NFL regular season on Sept. 7.

Purdy apparently avoided a more complex elbow reconstruction that could have increased his recovery period by seven to nine months.

Purdy, 23, made a stunning rise from being the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft to leading the 49ers into the NFC Championship Game.

After quarterbacks Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo were injured in the regular season, Purdy took over and led the team to wins in each of the final five games. Purdy and the 49ers then defeated the Seattle Seahawks and the Dallas Cowboys in the playoffs before falling to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC title game when the elbow injury occurred.

After fourth-stringer Josh Johnson went down with a concussion against Philadelphia, Purdy returned to action but was unable to throw the ball more than a few yards on pass routes.

In the regular season, Purdy completed 67.1 percent of his passes for 1,374 yards with 13 scoring passes and four interceptions. In the playoffs, he had a 65.1 percent completion rate while throwing for 569 yards and three TDs with no interceptions.
