NFL Honors: Saquon Barkley, Patrick Surtain II earn top awards

NEW ORLEANS — Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley was selected the Offensive Player of the Year at the 2025 NFL Honors ceremony at the Saenger Theatre on Thursday in front of a packed house of NFL stars, alumni and celebrities.

Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II was chosen the Defensive Player of the Year.

Barkley was a phenomenon this season, rushing for a career-best (and league-leading) 2,005 regular-season yards. He is on the precipice of setting the record for total rushing yards (regular and postseason), sitting at 2,447 yards after a monstrous playoff run, just 30 yards shy of eclipsing the mark set by Terrell Davis in 1998.

Barkley joined the Eagles in the offseason after a six-year run with the New York Giants, where he totaled 5,211 yards and 35 touchdowns. He has logged nearly half of that production in one season in Philadelphia, spearheading the Eagles’ potent ground game during their push to a 14-3 record and a Super Bowl LIX appearance.

A three-time Pro Bowler, Barkley was named first-team All-Pro for the first time in 2024. He also earned several Rookie of the Year awards in 2018 before being tabbed the PFWA Offensive Player of the Year and winning the Bert Bell Award (top NFL player) in 2024.

Surtain, in his second season as a first-team All-Pro performer, is widely regarded as one of the premier cover cornerbacks in the league at the age of 24.

A four-year pro and three-time Pro Bowler, Surtain also was named the PFWA Defensive Player of the Year.

The only year Surtain wasn’t a Pro Bowler was his rookie year, when he was named to the All-Rookie team while recording four interceptions. He matched that total in 2024, returning one of his four picks for a 100-yard touchdown.

With career 11 interceptions, two forced fumbles and 232 combined tackles, Surtain continues to gain accolades for his outstanding play.

Other awards to be handed out Thursday night included:
AP Offensive Rookie of the Year: QB Jayden Daniels, Washington Commanders
AP Comeback Player of the Year: QB Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals
Salute to Service Award: TE George Kittle, San Francisco 49ers
AP Defensive Rookie of the Year
Next Gen Stats Moment of the Year
Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year
NFL Inspire Change Tribute
FedEx Air & Ground Players of the Year

Saints QB Derek Carr (oblique) formally inactive vs. Broncos

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr is among his team’s inactives for Thursday night’s home game against the Denver Broncos.

Carr (oblique) is missing his second straight game. He was listed as doubtful to play.

Denver star cornerback Patrick Surtain II (concussion) is among the Broncos’ inactives. His chances of playing were bleak after being hurt four days earlier against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Also inactive for Denver (3-3) were cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine, outside linebacker Dondrea Tillman, defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike, offensive tackle Alex Palczewski and tight end Greg Dulcich. Zach Wilson is denoted as the emergency third quarterback.

Offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey (knee), linebacker Baron Browning (foot) and cornerback Damarri Mathis (ankle) were activated off injured reserve for the game.

Receiver Chris Olave (concussion) and tight end Tayson Hill (ribs) are among the other inactives for New Orleans (2-4). Also on the list are running back Jordan Mims, offensive lineman Cesar Ruiz, defensive tackle Khalen Saunders and linebacker Pete Werner.

Rookie Spencer Rattler is making his second career start in place of Carr. Rattler was intercepted twice while throwing for 243 yards and one touchdown in his debut, a 51-27 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Sunday.

Broncos CB Patrick Surtain II (concussion) exits vs. Chargers

Denver Broncos star cornerback Patrick Surtain II exited Sunday’s game against the visiting Los Angeles Chargers due to a concussion.

Surtain was injured on Denver’s first defensive snap as his head hit the ground hard after a Los Angeles incomplete pass.

Surtain put both hands to his head after the play and was attended to on the turf. He walked off the field with trainers and was examined in the medical tent before being taken the locker room.

Surtain was ruled out later in the first quarter.

The two-time Pro Bowl selection was the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts during a 34-18 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders last week. He had two interceptions and returned one 100 yards for a touchdown.

Surtain will have a hard time getting cleared to play for Denver’s next game, which is Thursday at the New Orleans Saints.

Surtain has nine interceptions — returning two for touchdowns — in 56 NFL games.

Meanwhile, Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh briefly left the game due to illness.

Harbaugh went into the blue medical tent shortly before kickoff. Then shortly after the game began, he departed to the locker room with trainers.

Harbaugh returned to the sideline midway through the first quarter.

Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter was the active coach while Harbaugh was away.

Reports: Broncos’ Patrick Surtain II, Jerry Jeudy both day-to-day

Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II and wide receiver Jerry Jeudy are considered day-to-day after sustaining injuries during the team’s Week 2 win over the Houston Texans, NFL Network and The Athletic reported Monday.

Jeudy hit the ground hard during the first quarter of Sunday’s 16-9 win, injuring his ribs during a double-pass trick play. Surtain left during the second quarter with a shoulder injury.

The news means Denver’s No. 1 corner and one of its starting receivers still could be back in time for Week 3, when the Broncos host the San Francisco 49ers.

Surtain is coming off a strong rookie year after being selected ninth overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. He had four interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, and broke up 14 passes.

Jeudy missed seven games last year with injuries and finished his sophomore NFL season with 38 receptions for 467 yards and no touchdowns. The 2020 first-rounder has five catches for 113 and a touchdown so far this season.

Broncos sign rooke CB Patrick Surtain II to four-year deal

The Denver Broncos announced Tuesday that they have signed first-round draft choice Patrick Surtain II to his four-year rookie deal.

Surtain, a cornerback chosen ninth overall in the 2021 draft, will reportedly receive just under $21 million. The contract also contains the usual fifth-year option for first-round picks.

Surtain was the second cornerback selected in the draft, being picked immediately after the Carolina Panthers tabbed South Carolina’s Jaycee Horn.

Surtain was a consensus All-American for Alabama last season. During three seasons with the Crimson Tide, he intercepted four passes — returning one for a touchdown — and forced four fumbles.

His father, also named Patrick Surtain, earned three Pro Bowl selections in 11 NFL seasons and posted 37 career interceptions.

The Broncos said Surtain is their sixth draft choice to sign a contract. The others are safeties Caden Sterns (fifth round) and Jamar Johnson (fifth), receiver Seth Williams (sixth), cornerback Kary Vincent Jr. (seventh) and defensive end Marquiss Spencer (seventh).

Mac Jones leads Alabama foursome entering NFL draft

Alabama quarterback Mac Jones joined fellow teammates wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, cornerback Patrick Surtain II and defensive lineman Christian Barmore in declaring for the 2021 NFL Draft on Thursday.

Barmore played as a redshirt sophomore while the other three are juniors, all announcing during a press conference their intent to forego their senior seasons to enter the NFL.

All are expected to be taken in the first round. Along with senior running back Najee Harris and Heisman Trophy winning wide receiver DeVonta Smith, the Tide could have six players selected in the first round on April 29 in Cleveland.

Jones completed his first full season as Alabama’s starting quarterback as a redshirt junior and threw for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns. Jones won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and Davey O’Brian Award.

“I played every role you can imagine from scout team to starter to national champion,” Jones said Thursday. “… I’m really looking forward to this next opportunity.”

Surtain, whose father, Patrick, played 11 seasons in the NFL, was a unanimous All-American and the Defensive MVP in Alabama’s win over Notre Dame in the CFP semifinals.

“Since I was a kid, my life-long dream was to play in the NFL and with much thought and consideration with my family and prayer I am announcing that I am declaring for the 2021 NFL draft,” Surtain said Thursday.

Barmore recorded 37 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 8.0 sacks – good for second in the SEC — six quarterback hurries, three pass breakups and three forced fumbles this season.

Waddle missed most of the season with a fractured ankle but caught 28 passes for 591 yards and four touchdowns and averaged 21.11 yards per reception in six games.

The Tide defeated Ohio State to win another national championship earlier this week.
