Three Florida players, one Tennessee player suspended over fight

The Southeastern Conference suspended four players for one half of their upcoming games over their roles in a scuffle at the end of Florida’s 29-16 win over then-No. 11 Tennessee last Saturday.

The SEC released a statement Monday saying Florida offensive linemen Damieon George Jr. and Micah Mazzccua and tight end Dante Zanders were suspended for the first half of Florida’s home game against Charlotte this Saturday. Tennessee defensive lineman Omarr Norman-Lott will sit the first half of the Volunteers’ home game against UTSA.

The four players were being punished for “flagrant unsportsmanlike actions,” according to the conference.

“The suspensions were determined after video review and consultation between the Southeastern Conference Office, the University of Florida and the University of Tennessee,” the SEC’s statement said.

Florida was in the process of sealing its win over the visiting Vols when quarterback Graham Mertz scrambled and took a knee in the final seconds. Tennessee’s Omari Thomas ran into Mertz, inciting a benches-clearing fracas in which Mazzccua threw a punch.

George and Mazzccua were Florida’s starting right tackle and right guard, respectively, to begin the season. Zanders is a backup tight end, while Norman-Lott started each of Tennessee’s past two games.

Thomas was penalized for targeting, but the officials overturned their call after review, meaning he will not be suspended for the first half of Tennessee’s game against UTSA.

Report: Gambling bans coming for multiple NFL players

Indianapolis Colts cornerback and return specialist Isaiah Rodgers is among a “handful” of NFL players expected to receive season-long suspensions for gambling, ESPN reported Wednesday.

The Colts confirmed earlier this month that one of their players was being investigated by the league for his betting activity.

“We are aware of the NFL’s investigation, and we will have no further comment at this time,” the Colts said in a statement on June 6.

SportsHandle.com reported that a Colts player was the subject of an investigation for placing “hundreds” of bets, a “considerable” number coming from inside the team’s practice facility. The player placed some bets on his own team, according to the report.

Rodgers, 25, was a sixth-round pick by the Colts in 2020. He has appeared in 45 games (10 starts) and has recorded 90 tackles, 10 passes defensed and three interceptions. He has returned 61 kickoffs, averaging 27.0 yards per return with one touchdown.

Wide receiver Calvin Ridley, then of the Atlanta Falcons, was suspended for the entire 2022 season for betting on NFL games while he was away from the team. He was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars last fall and reinstated by the league last March.

In April, the NFL suspended five more players for violating its gambling policy. Detroit Lions receiver Quintez Cephus and safety C.J. Moore and Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney were handed indefinite bans for betting on NFL games. Detroit receivers Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill were given six-game suspensions for betting on non-NFL events from inside an NFL facility.

Detroit has since released Cephus, Moore and Berryhill.

Miami suspends RB Jaylan Knighton, TE Larry Hodges

Miami backup running back Jaylan Knighton received a four-game suspension and tight end Larry Hodges was banned two games for team rules violations on Saturday.

Earlier this week, Hurricanes suspended safety Avantae Williams on the same day he was reinstated after battery charges against him were dropped. Head coach Manny Diaz said the second-year freshman will not play in the Hurricanes’ first six games.

Knighton rushed for 209 yards and a touchdown and had 11 receptions for 135 yards and a score last season.

Donald Chaney Jr. is expected to receive more playing time behind starting running back Cam’Ron Harris in Saturday’s season opener against No. 1 Alabama.

Hodges has totaled three catches for one yard and two touchdowns over the last two seasons.

Williams, 20, was dismissed from the team on July 22 after being arrested and charged with aggravated battery on a pregnant victim.

The case was closed last month when the woman, referred to in court documents as Williams’ ex-girlfriend, recanted parts of her story.

Williams, a consensus four-star recruit from DeLand, Fla., was ranked as the nation’s No. 1 safety by Rivals and ESPN in the Class of 2020. He sat out last season due to an unspecified medical issue.

Titans DT Tart, Bengals S Williams draw 1-game suspensions

Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Teair Tart and Cincinnati Bengals strong safety Shawn Williams each drew a one-game suspension Monday for stepping on opposing players and violating unnecessary roughness and unsportsmanlike conduct rules.

Both players plan to appeal their suspensions, according to the NFL Network. The appeals are expected to be heard this week, and each would lose one game check if the suspensions are upheld.

Tart was ejected in the second quarter of Sunday’s game between the Titans and Cleveland Browns. He appeared to deliberately step on the left leg of Browns offensive lineman Wyatt Teller, who was on the ground after trying to deliver a block.

Williams was ejected in the second quarter of Sunday’s game between the Bengals and Miami Dolphins. At the end of a play, Williams looked down and stepped on the right leg of Dolphins offensive lineman Solomon Kindley.

Tart has appeared in five games for Tennessee as a rookie out of Florida International. The Titans visit the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

Williams has played in 116 games, with 61 starts, since joining the Bengals in 2013 out of Georgia. The Bengals host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

Michigan State suspends two following arrests

Michigan State indefinitely suspended two redshirt freshman linebackers after an arrest last month, multiple outlets reported Monday.

Police confirmed to MLive.com that Luke Fulton and Charles Willekes were arrested in connection to the same assault complaint on Sept. 8 in East Lansing, Mich.

Fulton was initially charged with aggravated assault and arraigned on Sept. 9. On Oct. 2, he accepted a plea to a misdemeanor assault and battery charge to avoid up-front jail time and he is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 28, according to his attorney, Mike Nichols.

East Lansing Police Department deputy chief Steve Gonzalez told MLive he could not disclose the reason why Willekes was arrested because his court record isn’t public.

“Luke Fulton and Charles Willekes were suspended from all team activities immediately, and remain suspended from the program indefinitely,” Michigan State football spokesman Ben Phlegar said in a statement to MLive.com.

The Spartans are scheduled to open the season Saturday at home against Rutgers in Big Ten action.

All the NFL Suspensions for 2018 in One Place

Jameis Winston is the latest player to be suspended by the NFL after his incident with an Uber driver last winter. Jameis’ incident is not a typical case, most suspensions in the NFL are drug-related.
Whether player-enhancing or player-relaxing, most suspensions fall under those two categories. As of right now there are 12 players suspended for PEDs and two for marijuana-related charges.
Below is a list of all the players currently suspended, their charges and the length of their suspensions:
[table id=2 /]
This table will be consistently updated as new players are suspended
Added notes:
Vontaze Burfict: Claimed it was Adderall in his defense hearing. That would be substance abuse not a PED under NFL rules. The NFL denied his appeal.
Mark Ingram: Claims he tested positive for a substance that is allowed under the NFL rules. The NFL denied his appeal.
Josh Huff: Released by the Eagles after his arrest. He was arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm and marijuana under 50 grams when he was pulled over for speeding.
Roy Miller: He was waived from the Chiefs after being arrested on domestic battery charges. While the NFL declined to say that was the reason for his suspension, it’s not hard to connect the dots.
Jameis Winston: Last February, an Uber driver alleged that Winston grabbed her crotch. The investigation lasted seven months but it was reported he was receiving a three-game suspension on June 21st.
