Broncos elevate two WRs from practice squad

The Denver Broncos elevated two wide receivers from the practice squad on Saturday with Courtland Sutton ruled out and Jerry Jeudy questionable.

The Broncos (7-8) promoted WRs Michael Bandy and Phillip Dorsett to the active roster to bolster a banged-up WR corps. Rookie Marvin Mims Jr. is also questionable for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers (5-10).

The team also placed running back Dwayne Washington on the non-football illness list and promoted outside linebacker Ronnie Perkins to the active roster.

Sutton was ruled out with a concussion, Jeudy is questionable with an illness and Mims is battling a hamstring injury.

Broncos not ‘interested’ in dealing WRs Jerry Jeudy, Courtland Sutton

Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton acknowledged teams have called to inquire about Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton this offseason, but he reiterated Monday the team isn’t “interested” in dealing either of its two leading receivers.

“I think it’s pretty common every offseason,” Payton said Monday of rumors the Broncos might part with one or both. “(There is a) new coach (and it’s) not a real deep receiver draft.

“I would say a number of teams have called on those players. It’s not something that we’re interested in doing.”

Asked Sunday about it, Payton said “we’re not trading those two players.”

Jeudy led the Broncos with 67 receptions for 972 yards and six touchdowns last season. Sutton was second with 64 catches for 829 yards, but only reached the end zone twice.

While Payton evaluates the entire roster of a team that stumbled to a 5-12 finish last season, receiver is a position of strength.

In addition to Jeudy and Sutton, Tim Patrick is returning from a torn ACL and KJ Hamler might be ready for training camp following surgery for a torn pec. The Broncos added veteran Marquez Callaway to a depth chart that also includes holdovers Kendall Hinton (33 catches in 2022), Brandon Johnson (six), Jalen Virgil (five) and Montrell Washington (four).

While Payton has denied an interest in parting with one of his top two wideouts, it may ultimately be a strong consideration as he attempts to rebuild the running game. He has very little draft capital to work with due to last season’s blockbuster deal for quarterback Russell Wilson along with another first-rounder Denver parted with to get Payton from the New Orleans Saints.

“(The rumors will) continue, I’m sure, as we get closer to the draft,” Payton said. “If you really look at the draft and you really look at the receiver depth in the draft, it’s not a real deep draft.

“If you’re a team that’s looking for receivers – we’re not the only team people called. I’m sure Houston with Brandin Cooks and other players like that. It’s pretty common in the offseason, I think.”

Speaking of Wilson, Payton declined to say much about last week’s report that the quarterback underwent arthroscopic knee surgery after the 2022 season. Wilson resumed workouts and throwing and is expected to be ready for OTAs.

“Injury wise, I’ll keep you posted,” Payton said. “That’s something we’re not going to talk a lot about – probably ever.”

Report: Lions agree to deal with CB Cam Sutton

Cornerback help is on the way for the Detroit Lions, who agreed to terms Monday with free agent Cam Sutton on a reported three-year, $33 million contract.

Contracts can become official Wednesday, the start of the 2023 league year.

The Lions were 30th in the NFL against the pass last season, allowing 4,179 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Head coach Dan Campbell said competitiveness and understanding of coverage would be priorities in the secondary in free agency and the draft.

Sutton, a third-round pick out of Tennessee in 2017, has been a steady cover man for the Pittsburgh Steelers since entering the NFL. He was sixth in the league in passes defensed last season and started 15 games in 2022.

Sutton rates higher than some free agent cornerbacks on the market because of his ability to play slot receivers or cover the boundary.

According to NFL Network, the contract with the Lions includes $22.5 million due at signing.

Sutton, 28, collected eight interceptions, 38 passes defensed, five forced fumbles and 168 tackles in 84 games (39 starts) with Pittsburgh.

Broncos LB Miller undergoes ankle surgery

Denver Broncos star linebacker Von Miller underwent ankle surgery on Friday, coach Vic Fangio told reporters.

There was no immediate timetable given for a recovery period but it is possible Miller will miss most if not all of the 2020 season.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Joshua Metzl, who is one of Denver’s team physicians. Miller also consulted with noted foot/ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson of Green Bay, Wis., on Thursday, two days after being injured during practice.

“He had surgery (Friday) morning and I was told it went well, and we’ll see how it goes,” Fangio said. “They haven’t said anything on a timetable based on his surgery. That will depend on the healing.”

Miller’s injury was diagnosed as a dislocated peroneal tendon in his ankle during an MRI exam earlier this week. The club will eventually place him on injured reserve.

The seriousness of Miller’s injury was initially stunning to observers as it happened on a routine play late in the practice session.

“He just rushed around the edge and never hit the ground and never looked bad,” Fangio said earlier this week. “If you saw the video, you’d think nothing happened, but it did.”

Speaking prior to Friday’s practice, Fangio said standout receiver Courtland Sutton (shoulder) will sit out the session. Sutton was injured during Thursday’s practice.

Fangio feels there is a chance Sutton can play in Monday night’s opener against the Tennessee Titans.

While the timing of the injuries to Miller and Sutton are bad, Fangio didn’t feel like the team received a dose of bad luck.

“No, it’s part of everybody’s season eventually,” he said. “Ours just happened, we endured two this week. We’ll be fine.”

Miller, 31, has a base salary of $17.5 million this season, the fifth of a six-year, $114 million deal he signed in July 2016.

The eight-time Pro Bowl selection and former Super Bowl MVP has a franchise-record 106 sacks for the Broncos in nine seasons since being the No. 2 overall choice of the 2011 NFL Draft. Miller also has 490 tackles, 26 forced fumbles, nine fumble recoveries and two interceptions.

Miller has two career touchdowns — one on an interception and one on a fumble.

Broncos WR Sutton injures shoulder in practice

Denver Broncos Pro Bowl receiver Courtland Sutton departed Thursday’s practice with a right shoulder injury..

The 24-year-old Sutton reportedly experienced an awkward fall after attempting to catch a pass. Trainers assisted Sutton before he departed for the locker room.

The Broncos listed Sutton with a shoulder injury on the post-practice injury report. The team said he was a limited practice participant.

ESPN reported Sutton was having an MRI exam on Thursday.

The injury comes two days after star linebacker Von Miller suffered an ankle injury. Miller will undergo surgery and could miss the entire season.

Sutton enjoyed a breakout season in 2019 when he caught 72 passes for 1,112 yards and six touchdowns in 16 games (14 starts) and made the Pro Bowl. He had 42 catches for 704 yards and four touchdowns in 16 games (nine starts) as a rookie in 2018.

Sutton was a second-round draft pick (40th overall) in 2018 out of SMU.
